and he brought John Legend out to sing "Ordinary People"

Just thought of that this morning.

The Black Keys reached a point where their songs were in beer commercials and in video games. Beck is obviously a bigger Artist, but a couple of those Black Keys songs cracked the zeitgeist and were more ubiquitous in a way

But you're not wrong

So that may be why I don't think The Black Keys are that famous outside of their big songs whereas I was impressionable when Odelay and Midnight Vultures had a number of hits, although smaller ones than the songs from The Black Keys that caught on.

Beck has had a longer career and (at this time) could be considered perhaps to have achieved more (though that remains to be seen).

But the Black Keys have gotten bigger placements (licensing) and are playing way huger venues than Beck is today.

Yeah, at that time The Black Keys were more popular than Beck. I was going off of the impact of both acts' career but definitely by that time of the concert you saw The Black Keys were everywhere.

At the time that I went to the concert, Black Keys weren't big. They were opening as the first act on the bill, the sun was still out, and the place was half-empty.

As of a few years ago, the Black Keys were headlining arenas. Beck hasn't done that in years (or ever?).

And I say that as someone who is absolutely a huge Beck fan and doesn't really listen to the Black Keys.

Maybe my perception is foggy since I came up as a music fan in the 90's when Odelay was big and Beck was a young star in the alternative scene. I wasn't big into the alternative scene in the 90's but I knew of Beck and just assumed he was really famous in the general public because MTV always seemed to play his videos.

Since I wasn't big into the indie scene but like in Beck's case I knew The Black Keys were popular, The Black Keys took up as much mental real estate as Beck which is why I thought they were at the same level of fame.

But outside of Where It's At, Loser, and maybe the New Pollution, I can't say that Beck's catalog is filled with radio hits. The Black Keys do have more hits over their run.

...not a possible thing to attain today (or at least to the level that he achieved it and has maintained it).

Like, look, he's obviously big enough that the Recording Academy gave him the Album of the Year a couple years ago, in a move that everyone can probably agree is their "we have overlooked you for years so here's your recognition" play.

But yeah, like you said, he hasn't had many radio hits. He's not loved by the masses, but rather loved by the right tastemakers to ensure that he will forever be part of the conversation.

HUGE in the mid 90's!

Magazine covers. Grammy awards constantly featured on MTV and other music stations.

I can't off hand name a song by the black keys, alhtough I've probably heard a song of theirs in an ad or movie or something, but in terms of them being recognizable to random people I have to believe Beck is more well known

I mean, in 2006 I saw the Roots co-headline (but perform before) Gym Class Heroes (I left before they hit the stage). Come to think of it, a few years prior to that I saw the Roots open for 311. Rap-rock didn't last, who woulda thunk???

Saw Incubus co-headline (but possibly with a shorter set) before Deftones back in like 2000. Crazy thing is I saw them both 15 years later together, in an arena instead of a little theater, and the order had flip flopped.

I am not sure if Kast is more popular or not to be honest with you. But I think people would rather pay for a Kast show than a Lauryn show at this point, that's why they went on a festival headlining spree a few years back.

Told this story before here. It was at Penn Relays in 1995.

Then the next year he was the second act on the bill. Opened for the Fugees, The Lost Boyz, and the Boot Camp Click.

Also, saw Kid Rock curtain-jerk for Ice Cube, Too Short, Yo-Yo, and Dangerous Dame. He was also the absolute first person that went on, even before the even smaller other local acts that I'm forgetting.

Actually, since it was in Oakland, Ice Cube went on before Too Short, even though nationally he was the bigger star.

They did Eric b and Rakim greasy but letting them go on AFTER public enemy in PE's heyday on that Def Jam tour back in the day...I think i was 14 when Nation Of Millions dropped. That was back when they played half that album on daytime radio. The Def Jam tour came to philly. My big sister took me to see it at the Spectrum. I was soo excited.

Biz opened. BDP, slick Rick, and a few others was on it. PE was the real headliner back then. They tore it down. Eric B. and Rakim actually went on after them...to a crowd of crickets. My sister wanted to beat the traffic and leave, but that was a bad idea because everybody was leaving at the SAME TIME.

a shame remembering a frustrated Rakim spit his heart out at that show, while today we hail him the God.

Little Brother!!!! I think LB was doing the Cali leg of a tour and they had TDE cats open for them...this was around 09.

I think the lineup was Kendrick, Jay Rock, Joe Scudda, and then LB! LOL

I also saw dark haired ball cap glasses wearing Eminem open on a Soundbombing tour show (might not have been called soundbombing, but he sure as hell went on to be more famous than errybody in the function that day.)

Was that the Lyricists Lounge tour in 1998? I saw Eminem on that, I think he was like second on the bill. "Just Don't Give A Fuck" was out as a single, Slim Shady LP hadn't dropped yet.

Hell, just for fun I dug up something I wrote about it back in the day.

I don't know why, but I couldn't think of the name

Lyricist Lounge circa 98' at the Electric Factory

De La was the host

I'll never forget it

http://www.mtv.com/news/1425742/big-pun-slick-rick-de-la-soul-krs-one-stepping-out-for-lyricist-lounge-tour/

he opened... and his mic didn't work

Royce was the hype man and his mic worked fine

we were yelling at them to switch mics

but I think they interpreted it as booing

...so yeah, I saw Em get booed off stage opening at Lyricist Lounge...

appreciate it

Tribe headlined.

It was the night of a Holyfield fight (dont ask me which one, lol)

Tribe opened with "Award Tour", and right before the beat dropped and they took the stage, Tip yelled out "Holyfieeeellllld wooooonnn!!!!!!" and I just knew Trugoy would come back out and do the hook...nope.

so I saw The Roots "open" for The Mighty Might Boss-tones right when Illadelph Halflife was being released and I saw KRS-One "open" for G Love and Special Sauce....oh, and the Fugees "opened" for Buffalo Tom or something stupid like that...but Lauryn Hill fainted 3 songs into their set so wasn't much of a show.

or is that decision completely out of their hands?

Yeah, Prince was really good as a newcomer, but Rick James at that time was next level. I'm sure watching Rick every night helped Prince advance rather quickly.
