"Name some companion albums."

Albums made by different artist (but maybe or usually the same producers), that just are so sonically similar or related that they two albums complement each other enough that they can almost be enjoyed together as a whole (or to describe a movement or period) in music.

For example:

Mariah Carey's Emancipation of Mimi and Usher's Confessions could be a double album in my opinion thanks to Jermaine Depri's consistent sound accross the two albums.

Or

D'Angelo's Voodoo and The Roots Things Fall Apart and Common's Like Water For Chocolate. I guess those are the Soulquarian albums. I often listen to them together in the same sitting.

or

The Chronic and Doggpound

or

Cube's Amerikkka's Most Wanted and Fear of a Black Planet. TGhat Bombsquad sound though.

Am I making this up or is this a thing? Got others?

could also go back in time to 1992 when Quik, Hi-C, 2nd II None, PPC, AMG all dropped albums over a 1.5 year span, all filled with Quik production...

Like, "Back up off the wall" was legit amazing, almost too Jazzy for the average Rap fan. But it's almost wasted because even most Quik fans have never heard it.

"Make em Understand" was such an inspiration to me in my earliest beatmaking days

Like so many albums by a great producer, i always wished it could've had some real upper-echelon artists on the mic to match the musical quality.

I always saw these as companion albums before Red and Meth became a duo.

Both released late 4th quarter of 94...both dark albums...both a bit chaotic...similar sense of humor.

The sound like they were made in adjoining recording booths, but have completely different personnel involved. Both were about trying to be better black people with a more modern approach to it.

Sometimes.

I always thought they were somewhat related because it seemed like Bilal was riffing off on Umi Says breakdown where Mos keeps saying "Sometimes".

Turns out they were clowning Q-Tip with that song.

There's probably more, but the production period starting with ATLiens is Organized Noize's GOAT period to me:

OutKast - ATLiens
Goodie Mob - Still Standing
The Witchdoctor - A S.W.A.T. Healin' Ritual (only considering production this album might be ONP's best imo)
Cool Breeze - East Pointe's Greatest Hits
OutKast - Aquemini

These albums kinda diverge from that sound but same period:

Slimm Calhoun - The Skinny (2001-ONP moved on from that sound by this point but this album seemed to be a sorta throwback to that period, maybe recorded/produced much longer before this came out)
Sleepy's Theme - Vinyl Room

TPAB is an unabashed reaction to BM (Terrace Martin said as much). Both albums share the same aesthetic and themes...just from two different sides of the generation gap. Kendrick being the millennial, D being the Gen X-er.

Both albums are two different sides of the same coin. Both are as much homage to their West Coast forefathers as it is a chronicle of the current day that it was created in.

YG's gleeful gangsta tales provide the backdrop of the Compton that young Kendrick observed on GKMC.

Two modern major label rap classics that play very well off each other.

In response to Reply # 0

Del tha Funkee Homosapien's "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" heralded the sound Ice Cube would use on "Death Certificate".

Both were basically produced by the same folks.. Ice Cube, Sir Jinx, DJ Pooh, and Rashad.. and not only sampled PFunk (and others) heavily.. but had a signature sound associated with those samples.. the way the tracks were sequenced musically.. and the skits.. DJ Pooh was establishing himself as a sort of west coast Prince Paul on these two albums IMO.

Lyrics-wise.. Del and Cube were on very different wavelengths.. on the surface level.. but they had a very heavy influence on each other during this time period.. especially in terms of their flows.

I feel like there is a strong connection amongst this entire group of albums for some reason:

Soul Food
ATLiens
Illadelph Halflife
Labcabincalifornia
Stakes is High
Beats, Rhymes, and Life

Or maybe I just always associated them all with each other.

I do feel like Goodie MoB put a battery in a lot of folks' backs back then, though..

Apocalypse -> You're Dead! -> To Pimp a Butterfly -> The Epic -> The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam -> Untitled Unmastered

they don't sound the same, but imo they convey something as a grouping, and have enough of a production thread that they go together

you could to a lesser extent even include earlier recordings like cosmogramma, the golden age of apocalypse, pattern+grid world and until the quiet comes - and outside recordings like new amerykah 2, early riser and astral progressions - but while they carry certain consistencies, they aren't part of the core pack imo

Obviously, there's very little to no direct connection between them, but they play so well next to each other. Both traffic heavily in jazz, funk, boom-bap, and poetry; both combine emotive vocals with fantastic musicians; both are introspectively political and spiritual; and both find a space for dead legends to exist in a modern setting.

In response to Reply # 0

There's a only little bit of crossover here: Miles and Marcus Miller each appear of a pair of CK tracks, and Tutu was originally conceived as a collaboration with Prince, who also contributes to a pair of of cuts. Beyond that though, I was really surprised that there was so little cross-pollination when I checked Wikipedia, considering they where both mid-80s WB releases, and both are about 75% R&B-funk and 25% jazz.

Also, part of the connection between these two for me is that I seem to overrate both of them compared to the consensus. Both entered my collection mostly because I'd already purchased their more canonically approved classics, and now they're my 2nd favorite Miles and 3rd favorite Chaka/Rufus albums, respectively.

Damn near everything that Organized did on Stress was done by Freestyle Fellowship already. Organized just added more traditional hip-hop flavor to the mix. I'm baffled how Organized never got called out for this.

Both albums featuring themes of regret and hard-earned wisdom and their trademark dexterity with the pen. Both feature some of their best work in quite some time. Both albums handcrafted by one main producer.

Thom said that Endtroducing was a major influence in terms of the production techniques and sonic textures used throughout.

Also both albums were lauded as masterpieces and popularized a new sub genre in their respective genres.

Dre sighted the layering of samples and the clarity of the end result as a foundation for his expectation for The Chronic's sounds done and production techniques.

I don't have a reason for thinking this outside of the two albums being released very close to each other and the ways that Mos' thoughtful and serious side complimented Monch's rugged and great performance on IA.

Both albums were more moody and mature than each groups previous albums. Obviously both featuring production by Dilla.

It always felt similar to Beats,Rhymes, and Life to me. The Labcabincalifornia connection didn't become apparent to me until much later, but I agree.

76. "Maybe call these the Glasper Tree?"
In response to Reply # 0

They all have have Glasper featured playing or he's a main musician/producer, except one (Urbanus, though Casey Benjamin is on there). They have similar sounds and aesthetics steeped in hip-hop, forward-thinking jazz, and Soulquarian neo-soul. A lot of these artists I think were able to put out these albums because of Glasper's rise, directly or indirectly, starting after In My Element. So, I guess that's where the connection is for me.

Robert Glasper Experiment - Black Radio Remix EP (2012)
Robert Glasper Experiment - Black Radio 2 (2013)

Chris Dave and the Drumhedz - Glow (2018)

Kenneth Whalum III - To Those Who Believe (2010)
Robert Glasper - Double Booked (2009)
Stefon Harris and the Blackout - Urbanus (2009)
