That Playboi Carti album this year felt like the closest thing to a trap "beat tape" I could listen to (and I love trap music; also, I didn't love that album, so maybe it's a lost cause, this). If trap beat tapes went in a more dub type direction and incorporated some kind of host, toaster or MC just to keep the energy up, I could see it. Part of what drives/drove regular tapes were the samples that acted like emotional bridges for the listener; most trap doesn't have that.
