"What Female MC has the most "Replay" Value to You?"

What Female MC has the most "Replay" Value to You? I mean, the "go to" MC as far as a female is concerned in which you never get tired of her songs, albums, flow etc..etc..

I personally still go back to a lot of MC Lyte, Jean Grae and Bahamadia's album Kollage.

Thoughts?

Peace - Tony

Which is good, because there’s so few verses to replay...at least they’re mostly really good and able to be replayed 20 years later..

But you guys also mentioned Lauryn, Jean Grae and Bahamadia ... all of whom top my list as well.

MC Lyte is #1 still but those 3 aren't far behind. I loved Jean's album w/Blue Sky Black Death and still go back to it often.

I'm talking once you go past the Pantheon of Gods of the 1st golden era
(Rakim, Kane, KRS, Chuck, Cube, G Rap, and LL)

She was right up there with them and easily above the next tier of late 80's MC's

She's easily the GOAT female MC and deserves to be in top 10 convos

I've said this here, before...Queen Latifah "All Hail the Queen" is the first compact disc I ever purchased. That album has a place in my heart, forever. I would say...Latifah, Lyte, Jean Grae, Rapsody.

Great project, but never really dug anything else she released as much as "All Hail The Queen"....whole thing was that flavor, but I remember playing the shit out of the Daddy O track, "Wrath of my Madness, and "Inside Out"....damn, a lot of memories....

She probably has some of the most replayed songs by me from
any female emcee ever.

"Love Song" <-this song changed my whole view of women
and relationships at the time

"Taco Day" <-one of the most gripping, cinematic pieces
ever. She should get an eternal pass for this alone.

"Love Thirst" <-the single sexiest Hip Hop song ever made

"Take Me" <-um... I was going thru some things in my youth

but it wasn't on spotify. might have to dust off the CD i have stored somewhere.

Has she done much lately? I was surprised to see her name on the credits for Ted Leo's Hanged Man album. she did backing vocals on the hook of Can't Go Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieNMITLhtVE. Hell he had Open Mike Eagle doing background vocals on Let's Stay On the Moon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20seqhTzICQ on that album.

That album bangs so hard...from the intro to the lead single (Tight)...tons of bangers on that

And my fav female MC of all time is Queen Latifah...can still rock Just Another Day and chill in the whip.

.....only difference between a male and a female rapper I can think of is how deep their voices are

and this is a discussion board.

The OP wants to talk about female emcees
for whatever reason. Maybe he/she only
likes female emcees, wants to be hipped
to some they haven't heard, feels women
rappers are overlooked when the conversation
isn't about them specifically, or is just
in the mood to hear Hip Hop from a woman's
perspective. Also don't be alarmed if someone
makes a similar post about Black rock artists or
UK rappers, as these are also categories...
and they're categories because they have a
shared characteristic... pretty simple concept.

No apologies for the drawn-out, condescending
response either. The question warranted it.

>.....why is "female MC" still a category in 2018?

...in other art forms and professions I don’t see the distinction made?

1) One is female... the other is male.

2) Most discussions of rap center around the males

3) Males and females have different physiological makeups, which influences our experience of the world.
3a) (and this is the most important difference for me) Experience of the world influences the subject matter of raps... heavily (such as when I describe how Jean Grae's "Love Song" hit me... a man couldn't have done that or even rap the ending in first-person. It meant more coming from a woman.)
3b)Voices sound different... you know, estrogen/testosterone levels and whatnot

4) Currently, women seem to have to dress scantily clad to get radio spins

Maybe you can think of more

The 10th best male rapper in the country is on a lot more people's radar than the 10th best female rapper in the country, and it has nothing to do with skills.

Mainstream radio pretty much has a limit of 2 female rappers that it will push at a given time (Bodak Yellow would've flopped hard if Iggy was still a mainstream darling), and the indie scene isn't that much better. Mello Music has only released 5 albums from woman, and 3 of those were either instrumental or remixes. I don't think Stonesthrow, Rawkus, or Def Jux have ever put out a rap album from a woman.

This scarcity means that it's much more difficult to stumble across more than a couple dope female emcees, and that the female perspective is a scarce enough aspect that it's worth giving it its own category.

I liked MC Lyte but didn't care for anything after her 3rd album and her 5th album, that's it, everything else was boring, but she gets enough props & respect but Rah Digga is the only female emcee that I still rides with that still puts music out, I love Bahamadia but she hasn't done shit in years, her third album was an Australian pressing and that was over twelve years ago since she has put anything out.

I love her voice and her deliver is very
natural. She never tries too hard.
She just lets the song be what it is.
