"Poll question: Tetsuo & Youth vs The Impossible Kid"
Sat Dec-23-17 12:13 PM by Anonymous

Two of my favorite, and in my opinion best, hip-hop albums released in the past 5 years.

Lyrical dense.

Cohesive.

Well produced.

Great examples of an MC doing what the fuck they want and executing.

Which one do you think is better?

Discuss both...

GO!

Poll result (21 votes)
Lupe (11 votes)Vote
Aesop (10 votes)Vote

Both albums were great but Lupe's bad taste in rock showed up on some of those corny hooks. Tetsuo is long as hell too. Like 30 mins longer than The Impossible Kid. Kind of a chore to get through sometimes. Aesop kept it tight and brief. Plus his skills as a producer has gotten better.

Just my opinion but Lu is as bad as Em with the singing hooks. Blur my hands, dots & lines, prisoner, no scratches is all I can remember off top

2 your comment on his “rock whatever” didn’t seem to apply since nothing about those hooks are rock-based.

Agree to disagree. Lupe's hook game is weak imo. It wasn't as bad on this album as it was on the previous two.

>2 your comment on his “rock whatever” didn’t seem to

Not heavy rock. More like top 40 pop rock. Lu always been on that "my favorite songs aren't rap songs" tip.

Nor do they sound “rockish” at all.

I know it’s cool to jump on him for hooks because of his past albums but this makes it seem like you haven’t heard the album more than once.

Prisoners?

The album is dope. I’ve said that already. One of my favorite albums of 2015. If you like the hooks cool. I don’t. The hooks aren’t hip hop. Sounds like top 40 radio shit to me.

for making a song about his cat lol

but Lupe all day, I did enjoy F&L2 but T&Y was the one I was waiting on, the opening of "Dots & Lines" reminded me of DJ Quik's skit off The Book of David about the banjo

but nah, Lupe had too many tracks that I could relate too, Impossible Kid is something im playing out of boredom or a change of pace, it was cool but I'm not reaching for that, didn't have replay value for me

really, Impossible Kid is like any RTJ album for me, it's solid hip-hop, great production/lyrics but nothing I'm seriously hitting rewind on

I'd say T&Y is the art piece of rap and Impossible Kid is textbook underground

>Impossible Kid is
>textbook underground

nothing about it is 'textbook', from the:

subject matter (songs about having a goth brother and a little league coach killing a gopher, your cat, seeing a psychiatrist, feeling old around trendy looking kids working at a juice shop, etc)

flow and rhyme style (aesop opening up his style to writing sometimes very direct and to the point but also many dense/abstract parts, really only a select few rappers can pull off that blend of direct and abstract, lupe being one of them)

instrumentals (combinations of live instrumentation, samples, synths, and breaks, sampling and working with the band Grimace Federation, there's a blend between boom bap, analog darkwave synth stuff, and even sorta prog-rock)

fine if it doesn't connect with you like lupe, but to say anything about it is textbook is absurd.

I didn't say that as a knock, phrases have more than one meaning

and last time I checked underground was always the place for nonconventional subject matter

he's not talking about cars, clothes, and ho's, textbook underground

yall clowns need to learn to ask questions before yall jump out the window on people lol

T&Y was some soulful shit, tho

Respect both records for sure, but T&Y another whole

Both were top 3 to 5 in the years they were released. Giving Lupe the edge because of lyrics and concepts, which is weird to write, because Aesop Rock is top notch at both. And was on Impossible Kid, too. I just feel like Lupe was just a bit better.

Never been a big Lupe fan so figured Mural might've just been an exceptionally great exception

Just gave T&S another shot...it picks up again w/ Prisoners 2 & the rest is really good too

Didn't like his earlier stuff much as it seemed kinda cookie cutter but maybe those were just the singles...gonna dive into his early mixtapes now just in case
