Em has a lane....and he isn't switching it up at this point. I'm sure they'll be a couple songs to keep tho.

Happy for Kehlani tho, she about to get a bunch of new fans off of this.

Disappointed that neither 2 Chainz or the stuff with D12 made the cut, I wanna hear Em rap with other people.

Why not at this point do whatever you want?

Feature some real MCs. Get some real producers.

Make a hip-hop album.

He only stands to make more fans by making something for the heads at this point.

He isn’t going to lose his base...they’ll go along for whatever ride he wants.

>Why not at this point do whatever you want?

I couldn't agree more with everything you wrote below. That's what I wish he wanted. I was hoping he'd turn back the clock and drop a tough hip-hop album this time around, since his last 2 have been glorified emo-rock albums. But nope. Same old(new) shit, with even more pop leanings it looks like. Which is fine, if that's what he wants to do. I just don't think I'll be all that interested.

Em is just out of touch now. Stop recording secluded from everyone and at least have Royce and D Porter in some sessions. Just waiting to see who's on production. Hopefully this isn't another Em and Rick Rubin affair.

Others were quick to roast him post-Recovery, I still went to to MMLP2 with hope... But that was the one that had me o_O at him, this one looks to be more of the same. That newest song with Beyonce... SMH.

He still understood song structure and rhythm at this time, despite the accent bullshit. Lot of gems on this one. "Deja Vu" chief among them.

The only folks I see checking for him are people that don't ever listen to hip-hop but they'll listen to Eminem. Got a buddy who only listens to Rock but he'll go out and buy every Eminem album for obvious reasons.

Feels like the people that love his stuff now are the top 40 fans and we have nothing in common when it comes to talking about music.

I was hoping this would be a gag tracklist and the "revival" would be more than a reference to his career but a wink to taking it back to some hip hop shit

Haven't heard an Em album since Encore and haven't heard a single that made me want to since

Conspiracy theorist me was thinking Beyonce was some kind of retroactive "Renegade" subliminal to signal a White mans 4:44. . yeah im a nut

At the least I'll "preview" it to hang in the funny ass thread I know will be here but man

I just hope Phresher pull an AZ and "Life's a Bitch" the hell out of his feature

Gonna revisit Ems verse on Compton and wishful think

I get where Em is coming from, and it's well produced (I really like the beat switches).....but nah. That hook is awful man...

I don't think I wanna hear "white people be racist" songs from white people. It's not think I don't wanna talk about the subject, I just don't think you could make a good song out of that specific topic.

This song is fire. That beat switch at 2:46 is dope as fuck as is the lyricism. How a hip hop fan can hate on this is beyond me. I agree the chorus in the first part is cringe worthy but it's also part of the concept (white police, rock star music). Given that the rest of the song is fire, I for one can get past the chorus.

I think most people with hip-hop brains recognize that any "one of the greats" accolades thrust upon him are strictly based on skill level and ability to rap. Any thought of "greatest careers" or "greatest discography" went out the window a long time ago.

Post-Chronic/Post-Aftermath compilation flop, Dre has always been about only putting out the type of albums that you know is going to be a success. That way, they can never say you fell off Em is one of the few artists who still consistently sells records, so I'm sure both him and his record label want him to keep up that "streak."

Won't make for good music, but it will move units.

All the songs he recorded with other mcs will actually be on a part 2 that will be released soon after. Sort of like what JT did with his last. Part 2 will be the hip hop album you all want.

doesn't he make an album that utilizes his connections
(mind you, I know he could work with anyone he could possibly want)

but why doesn't he have an album produced by

Alchemist - in his camp.
Green Lantern - used to be in camp, and produces for Griselda
DRE
could get Preemo through Royce - or by himself for that matter.

collabs with
Royce
Griselda
Redman - since such a huge fan

why the fuck did he never have a Dilla beat? lol...

he doesn't get input from anywhere else really.

I remember when he was working with just blaze and just was like ehhh..
maybe we could try it again or try something different
and Em was like nah. this is straight.

don't get me wrong, he's a talented emcee.
he can put words together with the best of them.
his content sucks though.
his delivery been trash post eminem show.

he says he hates sslp and mmlp because he says he had no flow,
didn't know how to, and because of that... finds them trash.

coincidentally - those are the last albums I found to be tolerable.
but then again, haven't listened to them in at least 10 years.

I would probably find them more garbage then I did then.
no replay value the more time passes.

It almost seems that Em's songs are closer to spoken word than a flow that has a sense of rhythm. He's a great technician but there's something to be said for coming off as relateable.

Like you, to me his first two or three albums are worth listening to. But I haven't listened to a whole album of his in quite some time.

There was some garbage on that album, but the highs were highlights of his catalog and his flow was at his best at that point. Try and give that album another listen sometime. I gave it a listen a few months back and it still blows me away how bloody talented he was. SSLP hasn't aged well in my opinion, and MMLP is still great. But TES was prime EM.

Encore is where he fell right off and never got back up again. Relapse had a couple of decent songs, I don't think I even listened to whatever happened after that.

for a reason.

I think you're on to something he probably wouldn't sound right over some Legit soulful backdrops.

Most rappers in age range probably grew up in households listening to P-Funk and Stevie Wonder and shit, Marshall probably not so much.

Most of his instrumentals sound inorganic and often times kind of cheap.

Well, sort of. Nobody's asking for soulful backdrops from him. Just fucking hip-hop. Some boom bap. He's done it before. Numerous times. And very, very well. And very successfully.

Who Knew

Criminal

And that's just off the top of my head. When he spit on hip-hop beats, and rode the beat like a fucking human, he killed.

But yea - this rock/rap anthem shit, this cartoon shit, it's played man. It's boring. And he never raps on beat anyway so why not at least give us something to bob our heads to while you unnecessarily spazz the fuck out all off kilter lol

-Em on trap beats shouldn't be a thing that exists. Phresher is trash and I bet 2 Chainz verse on this is fire because it's a 2 Chainz beat.

-We've heard the rock-n-roll flips before....but I don't think it works this time out. I wonder how much it costs to use the "I Love Rock N Roll" sample, that had to be expensive.

-Em has some amazing flows here, but the music just doesn't match it....perhaps there isn't any hip-hop music that does.

-I don't like it, but River is gonna make Em some money.

-The B-Side wins again. From Bad Husband on the record gets a lot better, except Framed sounding like a leftover from Relapse.

-Untouchable and Like Home have the same message but Like Home is a far better song.

-Rhyme wise when Em is just getting a point across instead of going for cheap punches like he does on In Your Head & Arose he sounds so much better.

-If you liked Recovery & MMLP2 there's no reason you won't like this, it's pretty much the same album.

-Overall if we are using the Source mic ratings it's a 3-5.5 mic album with 4 mic lyrics. Dude needs a change sonically....but I don't think anyone in his camp is gonna push him to do it.

it's littered with those supremely corny punchline lyrics
he's been relying on the last 3-4 albums.

maybe it's just me but I can't stand them.

At least on these types of beats. But even on this song, in the first verse it's like ... slow down man ! There's a beat there --- find it !

He eventually did tho. This is his best song of the past 12-14 years IMO.

This is all personal speculation...

But I think he knows that Pink, Ed Sheerhan, the X Ambassadors, etc. will appeal to a more mainstream, pop-oriented crowd. If he's trying to put out a message to white America, these are the artists who will help get their attention.

He's not speaking to us or trying to appeal to us. He's trying to appeal to a large majority of white folks. Maybe he thinks that his raps can cross that bridge and make white folks pay attention.

I'd bet money that I won't like the album. But I think this is an apparent effort to appeal to white America. It's not aimed at us so the aesthetics will be very different.

He doesn’t need them at this point.

He was the highest selling artist of the entire last decade.

is he wants his message for right now, current events to be for white people. but yeah, I wish he would do some straight hip hop.

Is it possible that in the age of 45, he's speaking to those people who voted him in? Maybe he's trying to influence their thinking with this album.

Instead of referring to the president by his name, I tend to just call him 45. So when I said, "in the age of 45," I really meant "in these hectic political times."

I always joked that "Encore" was his attempt to see if he could make an album of fart and burp noises and still sell a trillion records, and he did just that.

So he could stick to real, actually enjoyable hip-hop for an entire record and would still sell. There's no doubt about that.

This is why I said above, that it's abundantly clear that he doesn't *want* to make hip-hop anymore. He has no interest in it. He's a pop artist. Which is funny considering his penchant for making fun of pop artists incessantly in the MMLP era.

Only joints I like are
Untouchable (when the beat switches at the 2min 46sec mark)
Framed
In Your Head
Castle

All the Rick Rubin joints are trash

All the joints with guest vocalists are predictable and sound like you expect them to sound.

Em will still be nominated for hella awards for this LP.

I have not heard this and don't intend to, but haven't even heard anyone else who has it. Looks like sold around 197,000 so far.

This isn't his first wack album but seems his diehard fans are finally moving off him. He's never not gone multi platinum since on major label but I think this won't go platinum at all, could be wrong tho, maybe one of the singles will start getting a lot of play and pick up steam.
