Prince Paul Shares Unreleased De La Soul Music That Stands With Their Best Work

Last month, Prince Paul dropped a knocking alternate mix of “Chubb Rock Please Pay Paul His $2200 You Owe Him (People, Places, and Things),” a 14-year-old album cut featuring DOOM, Chubb Rock, and Wordsworth. The Grammy Award-winning member of Stetsasonic, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and BROOKZILL is not done. Paul had also been holding onto a De La Soul collaboration, “I Don’t Care.”

Paul was a mentor to his Long Island neighbors, linking with them when Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo were teens in school. A minor when he joined Stet’, Paul brought the act to Tommy Boy Records, and remained at the helm for De La’s first three, highly-acclaimed albums. Each of those efforts is praised for innovative sampling, skits, Jazz fusion, and fully executed album concepts in a time when none of it was prevalent in the Hip-Hop genre.

By the mid-1990s, De La transitioned its sound and direction. The trio began producing itself, along with recruiting J Dilla (as Jay Dee), Rockwilder, and Supa Dave West, among others. On Paul’s projects, De La made several appearances, including new and archival material. “I Don’t Care” did not make Politics Of Business (if ever intended), but arrives in time for the LP’s “Redux” edition, dropping Friday (October 13).

That cadence used transports me back to Stakes and how great a time that was. The Chubb Rock track is crazy too, even Wordsworth who usually annoys me came clean on it. I'm just happy Paul is still engaged and putting work out. But man of man, what I wouldn't give to hear what he and De La could put together right now.

Some of the verses I remember, but the beats are different, right?

Weird how memory works, I didn't even KNOW that I remember some of the lines, but listening earlier I knew the punchlines and everything.

Anyways, this is a dope time capsule. I haven't heard from some of these cats in probably a decade at least (Kardinal Offishall, Wordsworth, Truth Enola) and it was fresh hearing younger DOOM, De La, Guru, Freddie Foxxx.

http://ambrosiaforheads.com/2017/10/prince-paul-politics-business-remix-album-stream-download/

Prince Paul has a legendary career in Hip-Hop. A member of Stetsasonic, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, BROOKZILL! and many other projects, the Long Island, New Yorker revolutionized the way producers approached sampling in the 1980s. He mentored and produced De La Soul, in addition to work with Chris Rock, Boogie Down Productions, Big Daddy Kane, 3rd Bass, J-Live, and countless others.

As a solo artist, Paul is revered as well. 1999’s Prince Among Thieves forecast cinematic album-making and cast highly-skilled professional MCs as characters to his universe. After two LPs with Tommy Boy Records, Paul released third LP Politics Of Business with Razor+Tie in 2003. Featuring Dave Chappelle, Gang Starr’s Guru, DOOM, Erick Sermon, Chuck D, Ice-T, the album had big plans. Almost 15 years later, Paul was not satisfied with the LP’s sound. So, he remixed it. “This is the first time that I can think of that an artist has taken an album mad years later and just redid the whole thing because they didn’t like it,” Prince Paul told HipHopDX. “Usually they just live with the record, and they move on. They go, ‘Oh, I’ll make my next one.’ But I was like, ‘Nah I’m gonna revise.’” He also added a track with De La Soul that did not come out on the original. He confirmed to DX that the song was from a super-group The Good, The Bad & The Ugly with Paul, De La, Dan The Automator, and Dust Brothers’ co-founder Mike Simpson. Dan joins Paul as Handsome Boy Modeling School, and the effort would have marked a greater reunion of the producer and his most revered group.

If a “Redux” version were not great enough, the Grammy Award winner gives it away for free:

Heads looking for open streams and Prince Paul content ought not sleep on 2016’s Throwback To The Future LP from BROOKZILL! (Paul, Ladybug Mecca, Don Newkirk, and Rodrigo).

From the Mass Appeal interview, it sounds like these beats were made in recent times, which I find interesting. That Liks/Beatnuts track sound like a Black Moon joint. And then you got Jean Grae, Guru, Planet Asia, De La, Def Squad (sans Redman unfortunately) and even DOOM! A nice surprise in 2017.
