Diamond D is a lot better than people think he is. I prefer him chopping dope ass loops and breaks than I do him doing synthy stuff, but man his drum loops are always heaven.

In response to Reply # 30

I can see your point about the programming of Lyrical Gangbang because it's just the loop of When The Levee Breaks, but those drums knock. I was just referring to the sound of the drums, not necessarily the level of talent it took to pull of the beat.

... to be sure I was absolutely co-signing the inclusion of that song. For starters it's one of the best Death Row posse cuts of all time and Dre bodied that sample.

I don't care if the drums are sampled, programmed, whatever. If they knock they knock. In this case, as you say, they knock, so it counts.

Did Dre have someone replay the drums as he tends to do, or was that a straight sample of the Led Zep track ?

In response to Reply # 11

It's not a Roots record, but Questlove did the drums, so I figured I'd put this response here.

I wonder how long it took him to record the drums for that since the sound for the drums change often during the song. Or maybe whoever mastered to song was responsible for how the drums changed throughout the song.

the album version is not the one. it's a'ight...but i so much prefer the original version was only released on singles as the Underground Mix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93zKkEa6ZNA

the difference is subtle but i hear it. Marley Marl had to cut up 'Payback' a bit more for the album version b/c Foster and McElroy were like, 'hey bruh...'

https://youtu.be/tLZr1GsZdQw?t=66

producers having slight beef over who used which James Brown loop and how.

but still. anyway, i like the way Marley did it the first time which i dunno but might've been inspired by how Foster and McElroy had just done it.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 35

Personally those drums are just regular but he sampled the kick & snare real loud and then compressed them then put some Lord Finesse sligh-bells with it to round out the rhythm.

"98 (Instrumental)": https://youtu.be/d2SXs448ubE

On the Artifacts remix he just got a loud snappin' snare & kick in the middle while the bassline is upfront and everything else is low in the back; sounds similar to OC's "Born 2 Live" joint.

"C'Mon Wit Da Get Down (Remix)": https://youtu.be/gGUccsT2aKg

I'm no musician but I LOVE the drums on that. Is it not complex what he did there? Is it him alone or Knuckles(?) with him too?
Is it all live drums or drum machine or both?
I asked about it on here before but didn't get an answer. Was I easily impressed?

I'd like to mention, too, Dope Boys by Game w/Travis Barker.

On The First, the drums are an 8 bar loop and the way the producer, Hiroshima (never to be hear from again) made the kicks bounce on bar 6 and then how they snapped the snares over the rapid kicks throughout bar 8 just suck me in. hands down my favorite drums on any hip hop song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX2SMUPUvv8

On I Really Mean It, Just Blaze just really took the idea of drum programming and turned it on it's head. I mean, I could be wrong about the originator but there was stuff on there * I * never heard previously. Just the over use (but not) of cymbals, how he had tom rolls rolling into snare rolls that he programmed, and then he had sample drums rolls and fills from marching bands that he would drop in to fill the end of a bar.

Always liked the original much better than the remix with Joe.
