BESIDES RZA.

I know Meth has a bunch of other things going, but I wish he just bang out an album with one person. RZA prolly doesn't have time, but IDK too many people that would get it right besides the legends.

but Pete Rock would be my choice. His beats are more rhythmic than RZA's and Meth would be able to stretch out more and do different things with his flow. But I'd have to have a few of those ashy ass PR beats on there, with VERY few guests.

The first two are more to my liking. Illmind is versatile and could if asked to provide some "cleaner", less boom-bap sample-based production.

The key to a good Meth album is making it Wu-centric.

Wu features, Wu production. Any time he's on Wu shit he shines,
but if he's doing outside production/features he isn't the same.

was how Thought didn't hesitate each time he started each of his verses. I have to admit Method Man's third verse was pretty impressive in terms of his breathe control, despite the fact he turned into LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow with his smartphone there. Gotta think a lot of other rappers have similar reactions to what Method Man did at the start of that session.

I've never heard this before. In my experience, it's very much the other way around. But, let's be fair though. Rappers should always be writing, and hearing part of a prepared verse in a freestyle is only a bit of human nature.

I don't think you're implying that all freestyles are prepared beforehand, but I want you to clarify what you're saying.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

9.9 times out of 10 when you hear a freestyle it is a verse the MC has memorized specifically for those situations. The smart ones will write in areas where they can substitute in DJ’s names etc to make it seem more authentic.

I remember reading an article a long time ago where Eminem was like “no one freestyles. You better come prepared with a verse because no one wants to hear that dumb shit off the head where it makes no sense” -something to that degree.

But I remember a bunch of times when I've seen emcees come of the top. Battle type verses at shows.

But on the radio...I expect part of the verse to be pre-written, or prepared. But I expect some of it to be new.

it was the other way. a lot of MCs did more nonwrittens before their careers took off. but for the most part, when they do it nowadays, they have something stored in memory.

you could sense when Thought went from written to non-written, like when he passed it back to Mef. Mef just looked odd cuz we don't associate that phone shit to old head MCs. you might expect that from someone younger.

...that freestyle used to refer to a non-topical rhyme like Kane's "Raw."

There are a lot of people that used "freestyle" on mixtapes to refer to a similar notion (nontopical rhymes, usually braggadocious).

Freestyle Fellowship did a lot to shift the notion of the term freestyling to one associated with improvisational rhyming.

Me and Kari Orr started a podcast together and we go into this topic a bit when we were discussing the Black Thought/Meth cipher: https://soundcloud.com/alan-page-9/grown-folks-talk-episode-5

Would love it if y'all took a listen and gave your thoughts.

Let me preface this statement by saying that I understand that he was not there to promote his rap career or to rap in general. I get it. So to not be ready to go back and forth with Thought is understandable.

HOWEVER...
NO MC SHOULD EVER GO TO SWAY IN THE MORNING AND NOT BE PREPARED TO SPIT!
If he was on Ophrah, The Breakfast Club, Wendy Williams(lol imagine that), Ellen...etc No need to be "BarPrepped" but dude this is Sway in the Morning. Heather B is the co-host and whether he knew it or not, BLACK THOUGHT IS ALSO AN IN STUDIO GUEST!

So yeah, I was shocked when I heard him say he's going to the phone but yea, I get it.

Now, that being said, it's not easy to spit written rhymes while reading them and still sound like you are spittin' flames.
Meth executed his verses with precision.

It just looked wild to then have Thought spittin' so effortlessly(now that I think about it, didn't I see Thought doing a crossword puzzle and solving a Rubix Cube during his verses?lol) right next to him and even throwing in a couple bars off the dome to do what should have "wrapped it up" but Meth was so busy trying to scroll through his raps that he didnt catch that it was the perfect way to end it.

Both were extra dope though.

He definitely had practiced some of them as his cadence was there. I'm fine seeing him read from a phone. He might not of had the time to memorize yet

thought, however. He's on his shit. But he is in the habit of memorizing and remembering things daily for the tonight show. My guess he is just much more well versed at memorization than most cats. Seems like he is an endless vault of bars.

dudes aren't in here actually thinking that BT was creating his rhymes on the spot from scratch... right?

remember this is OKP, where posters get a little carried away when their favorite artists do something and start in with hyperbole and fantasy when it's not warranted or helpful.

It's clearly a prepared verse, but dude just crushes all competition.

But he doesn't have a lot of time to fit his verse to the beat. But it meshes almost perfectly.

In response to Reply # 22

Not sure if he wrote that "Legendary Crew Roots Tang" line beforehand, but it felt like he added that in to close because he was ciphering with Meth. I think Thought has a lot of bars memorized and can fit them to different beats. The ability to spontaneously fit pre-written verses flawlessly to beats of various bpm speeds is a skill in and of itself.

Spirit (Alan)
