"Interview: Making of Mr. Lif's "I Phantom" on its 15th anniversary" Sun Sep-17-17 12:05 PM by mrhood75
Written by myself. I interviewed Lif and he gave a really in-depth, really dope looking in the process of making his debut album. We talk about his inspiration for making the album, break down all of the album's tracks, and talk about its place in his discography. Pretty long piece, so I'm not going to swipe it.
So click the link and give it a read. And tell a friend.
I forgot how dope lif is, I always love hearing his perspective. I agree that he's underrated. I might have to revisit a whole bunch of lif after reading that.

Got me looking for my Emergency Rations copy and sh!t. Its around here somewhere...
Emergency Rations and Black Dialogue were probably the only Lif drops I gave enough attention too. I did always enjoy his features and seeing him live though. I have some revisiting to do.
Its also cool that Thievery Corporation has kinda made him a member.

why the track I-Phantom wasn't on the album itself. That always struck me as odd mainly because I loved the beat for I-Phantom at the time. Great work by El-P on that track.

Yeah, I wasn't able to put it all in the interview, but he initially saw "Emergency Rations" as a release from planning and recorded I Phantom, then saw how the track fit in as a closing track for the EP.

..I remember really liking his late 90s shit (elektro, nothing, farmhand) but never really gave his 00s stuff a fair listen ..gonna have to catch up on his LPs now

not like I need an excuse to revisit any Mr. Lif project, but yeah. And thanks for sharing.

The 1-2 punch of Emergency Rations and I, Phantom is something he hasn't been able to match in my opinion, but that's more a reflection of how high I place the albums (Phantom especially) and not him falling off. I still check for everything he drops.
I, Phantom was one of my core albums back in college.
__ I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

In those early days, I liked how each of his projects had a logical thread. "Colossus" was his intro to himself as artist and all of his crews. "Rations" was some straight lyrical shit and some poltical commentary. And then Phantom was his really ambitious debut album.

He technically doesn't live in the Bay now. He first moved out here in 2000-01 or so, and has left and come back a few times. I think his "home" is back in Boston these days, but he's out on the road constantly to support his own projects and to tour with Thievery Corporation.
