so i'm out in china at a 5 star hard rock hotel on the edges of the worlds biggest golf complex. they came after me for my vinyl and my 90s r&b smarts. never though any of those would ever really come in handy. they've currently got me from 7-10 in a completely empty hotel lobby bar. eventually there might be customers.
my boss (a young chinese girl, the "vibe manager") asked for funk but i'm not sure she even knows what that is. about a week into the job, i sense the need for a more modern approach. i tried going with some old but classic funk and soul and she asked for more contemporary. so i've been playing a lot of very funky nu-disco and that kinda works (dr packer, joey negro, etc).
she also asked for some new rnb. so i need to get with the times. it needs to be positive, uplifting. any pointers?
also looking for recommendations in the world of deep, sexy, jazzy, not-too-electronic house music (moodyman, etc). ideas or favorite albums? i'd like to keep this job without completely selling my soul.
BABBADNOTGOOD-Late Night Tales (whole album of funky covers....if you were really lazy you could play this straight thru and no one would even notice IMO)
Kali Uchis "Tyrant" featuring Jorja Smith (if it were up to me this song would be on the radio on the regular, there's a spanish version too)
