"For those who care, Roland dropped a botique 808"

It's the latest in their boutique line.

Sure, it's not the same as the OG.
Yes, quality 808 samples are easy to get.
And yes, the TR-8 s only a buck fifty more.

But still... this looks like a fun, quality piece at $349.

And a few others. I've wanted the OG, but I don't have the space. This, and the OP-1 are on my wish list.

studio.

I do wish someone would creep in on the midrange, standalone drum sampler/sequencer game though. Elektron dropped the Digitakt but that looks wild "meh" to me personally.

The Roland MV series is starting to creep up in price on the used market after bottoming to a point where I saw multiple 8800's for less than 600 last year. With the success of their boutique series I would imagine they could pull off a smaller MV with a more streamlined feature set. A 32 track sequencer, 40 gig hard drive and two gigs of RAM based on the MV sequencer w/an updated GUI should be a piece of cake at the 599 range.

I think a few of these small pieces with the controllers & software I have would probably be a good compromise.

A recording session with a kid using the MV-8800 was about the 2nd worst session I ever had. His manager (aka the dude taking advantage of him) got talked into buying it, and the kid didn't really know how to use it outside of using the pads. Completely clueless about MIDI, etc. A nigga the night before controlled the whole A room with an MPC 1000 with a shorted out MIDI cable.

Boss has been doing a similar thing the past few years with the "Waza Craft" series of guitar pedal reissues. They give you replicas of the originals in replicas of the original housings, but with a few modern add-ons that keep them relevant.

I like that they're doing this. It recognizes the classic sounds without just regurgitating them redundantly.
