It was the first Binary Star album (Waterworld is essentially the same album as MOTU)...I can't see how you would've been invested in them and then disappointed by MOTU.
Go re-listen to "Glen Close", "Evolution Of Man", and "I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings", they were not at all rapping about rap, and OneBeLo has done plenty his solo stuff. "Wolfman Jack" too, although that hasn't aged as well.
But really, the straight up rap tracks are the best..."Reality Check", the title track, "One Man Army", "Honest Expression", "What It's All About"...the majority of it still sounds incredible.
