As I'm sitting here listening to Cameo's "Sparkle" on repeat I'm thinking this song doesn't even need a lead vocal based on the gloriousness that is the background vocal arrangement. Luther obviously had killer backgrounds (Better Love) Stevie did as well (Aint No Use).
Any specific songs come to mind where you say the backgrounds make the song?

Where Debra Killings was on everything. When I was stealing CD's from BMG & Columbia House, going through the liner notes and seeing her on everything.
Outside of that, I like TLC's "Sumthing Wicked This Way Comes", where you can hear just a twinge of Cee-Lo in the mix, and Toni Braxton's "Why Should I Care?" with Chante' Moore on the hook.
Also, is there a term for when you're listening to something with headphones, and kinda-sorta take the headphone jack out, and can hear some other layer of the mix? Are there any audiophile headphones that do that without taking the jack out?
I had never heard either one of these songs, thanks for sharing. For whatever reason I never bought Crazy Sexy Cool and my only Toni Braxton album is her debut. But I'm well aware of the greatness that was Debra Killings on Org Noize projects. And yeah the backgrounds by Chante on the Toni cut are nice.

i'll have to go back and pick a specific song since that was what was asked in your initial post, but when i think about background harmonies, Chaka instantly came to mind....

I'm biased because she is my favorite female singer of all time. Of course this version is better, I can't have a discussion otherwise. The hazy psychadelic quality of this is what drew me in initially. I heard Luther's before Stevie's.

...b/c the whole time there's a woman just wailing through out. and when they hit that 'do' at the end of this part even Luther had to applaud his background singers.
