Singer’s representative said his death was sudden and unexpected

Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died aged 52.

In a statement to the Associated Press, his representative, Brian Bumbery, said Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

and saw this alert on my phone. I'm crushed. I'm not exaggerating, either. Chris Cornell was my favorite singer from my favorite group of all time. I've talked about it countless times over the years, here in the Lesson. Can't even recall how many great conversations I've had regarding my love for that whole 90s Seattle sound and most specifically, Soundgarden. I have everything these guys made going back to the Subpop years...solo and other group projects, included. I can't even begin to wrap my brain around the thought that the man who belted out Outshined, 4th of July, Rusty Cage, Hunger Strike, Pretty Noose, I am the Highway,...is gone...at 52. I literally, was just listening to Down on the Upside a day or two ago. Man. So crushed. RIP, Chris...Say Hello to Heaven.

Appreciated hearing your personal history with the band.

just, completely blindsided. I'm not in any way trying to compare the artists...but this helps me understand what some Prince fans were going through. I liked a lot of Prince's music, I understood what he was and I was saddened by his passing. Yet, it didn't "move" me in that way. This legit hurts.

I was strictly house and hip-hop and while I fucked with Nirvana I only heard the singles so I saw them as just another 'pop' band.

Nine Inch Nails won me over because I found their drum programming and samples 'hip-hop' and while I loved it I didn't 'feel' it nahmean because it was so theatrical. But it got me to pay attention to what was happening in rock...

Soundgarden was just so bleak and emotional as fuck..that and Alice in Chains are what I would put on when I was in a mood.

Spoonman is burned into my brain as well as "Outshined"

I didn't care for Audioslave all too much even though I was happy to hear his voice back on modern radio in the mid-00s

Knowing he played a gig and then took his own life literally a few hours later (pronounced dead at 12:05AM) is troubling. I can't imagine what his mental state was in those last hours.

RIP

it feels kinda shitty to say, but with Layne...you kinda knew the end could be near. I remember he came out to perform "Nutshell" on Unplugged. He was mad thin and missing teeth in the front, but still ripped that performance. Scott...Scott was Scott. Anyone who followed STP, while hurt, definitely wasn't surprised when he passed. This, though...this feels like a sucker-punch. I follow Chris on Twitter...this was his last Tweet:
https://twitter.com/chriscornell/status/864995525686415360
Man, this sucks so bad. NO ONE'S music is as deeply ingrained in me as Soundgarden's. I can hear a Kim Thayil riff, Ben Shepherd's bass, or Matt Cameron on the drums from a mile a way...and Chris' voice is permanently etched into my brain. Since Thursday, listening to his/their music has inevitably led to me drawing all sorts of parallels between the lyrics and his death. I don't know if I should shut down everything related to him for an undetermined amount of time...or, consume as much as I can and just let it burn. I know a couple of people who left work the day Prince died. Like..."I can't be here" and just bounced. I got it...but I didn't "get" it. I get it, now. This really hurts.

I'm 37 and Soundgarden was peaking when I was really getting into the meaning of music. I never got into Soundgarden. But this is definitely sad. It's incredibly sad that the only lean singer alive from that collective is Eddie Veder. That's fucked.

Why now, dude?

This guy means a lot to me as a singer and a songwriter because he was one of the few that could carry the schitt all by himself...on some Bill Withers guitar/voice schitt.

Let me just say...every time he stepped out of Soundgarden mode, I never had much patience for his music, mainly because it just doesn't "feel" like the person that I initially paid attention too (also see: 90's Prince, p.b.u.h.).

Chris Cornell was a better Bluesman than so many...excuse me, DAMN NEAR ALL the people that've flown the banner of Bluesman since Jimi.
He took it to another level, like Jimi.

Johnny Cash singing "Rusty Cage" is cool, but I've still never made it all the way through that song (cause I just don't care for it, sorry, that song requires a different kind of guts than being at death's door)...but imagine Howlin' Wolf singing "Like Suicide".

There's a ton of them.

Whatever the case...I'm gonna miss being blown away by dude's singing and songwriting...just like I was the first time I saw Soundgarden at St. Andrew's Hall waaaay back in what was that 1992?

*sigh*

I think you should give his solo stuff another go. Especially, Euphoria Morning and Carry On. They contain some of his best songwriting...and he's singing his fucking GUTS out. Scream is good, too. I didn't hate it the way some "purists" did...as if somehow him teaming up with Timbaland was sacrilege. Like you, man, I'm still fucked up from this. I listen to the music and end up getting SO frustrated, like "damn, Chris...why?!?!?! Just to know someone containing all that talent and ability is gone...is very sad.

The sludged out riffing on "Black Days III" from the Superunknown Deluxe jammy...maaaaaaaan!!!

Believe me, I try once twice every year/two years with his solo/Audioslave stuff and I just can't "hear" it yet, cause it's not what I want to hear out of dude.
I look forward to the day it happens.

Like I'm saying, "Down On The Upside" is still being heard with fresh ears because that was a pretty hard pivot from the previous two albums...but it gets better every time.
