"When flippin the same break..."
Sat Apr-22-17 02:52 PM by _Torchbaras

Inspired by the post on the new Evidence joint, and sein cats, including myself, not fully embracing the track cause the sample source was flipped before (and maybe better!?) by someone else. What joints are out there that shared the same source, but were just as dope as one another if any? Im curious to see if one dope flip cancels out every attempt following, and why... State your opinion fam.

Never heard the 9th one. Had the Term tape with him rippin the Dilla one, which was/is dope as hell... My opinion on here it is a tie, I prefer the smack of 9th drums and he had some dope passages from the source, but technically Dilla put the most work in. Great example...

And it's a bit ironic saying that considering the strange nature of the loop. But personally, I feel like the Spacek beat is genius whereas 9th simply made yet another soul chop on those drums he started to borderline rely on at that phase in his career.

I dunno, it may sound like I'm coming across as snobby here, but Dilla's flip just feels better to me and I don't think it's necessarily to do with his name having more clout here.

even though I appreciated the uniqueness of Dilla's. but Dilla's take definitely needed vocals to "complete" it, whereas I could bump 9th's naked.

I don't think one flip cancels another out in this case, both parties made some groundbreaking shit around the same time with those infamous It's A New Day drums.

InI - Keep On, Heavy D - It's A New Day prod. by Pete Rock
Big L - Put It On, Showbiz & A.G. - Runaway Slave, Diamond D -Sally prod. by D.I.T.C.

Marley Marl vs. Everybody on Sly Stone's Sing A Simple Song break (and many other breaks). I think Marley won this competition with Mama Said Knock You Out which is probably the hottest flip of those drums I've heard to this day.

I like 'em both equally for the different feel and storytelling each Flip brings.

Another killer use of the Skull Snaps break I forgot by Pete: One In A Million off the Poetic Justice soundtrack!

Don't really think there's a story. The finished product on both doesn't sound like a bite.

Look at how many people used different parts of "Nautilus".

Back again for the first time.

100 producers that record...

i'm sure 99 or more would take the same exact part

that is the "break" on the record

always liked the bizarre, lazy shuffle of Come On Feet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_5edxArGT8

then I heard this beast of an unreleased (to my knowledge) Dilla joint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2fs91u42AE ...which is the *complete* opposite in terms of feel: urgent. hypnotic. unrelenting. and the kick drum pattern is ...weird. one of my fav Dilla joints ever.

(Big Pun spit over a flip of this too, right?)

That's when I first heard the sample back in '97 but I swear it was also used on Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon album but I haven't heard that album in years.

this is eerie.

still prefer Dilla's for the don't-give-a-fuck'ness, but this is nice too.

seems this was quite the popular sample. makes me wanna try something with it

...what I posted was a first reaction ...that said, that reaction was real and usually doesn't equate to me loving the song later ...Remember when Busta jacked the Diamond "went for mine" track? That still bothers me for some reason..
