"It's time to have this discussion... Kendrick Lamar's run..."
Tue Apr-18-17 12:03 PM by Crash85

EP
Overly Dedicated
Section.80
GKMC
TPAB
DAMN.

If you want, throw in untitled. unmastered...

Has anyone had a similar or more consistent run?

I can't think of anyone...

I'm not saying he's the greatest of all time... just talking about consistency...

EDIT: this might be too narrow of a topic and people might just give yes or no answers... let's discuss consistent album runs and discographies (yes, I realize this has been done before)... how do they stack up? Impact? At what point did they fall off? Or did they never fall off (Outkast)? Does Jay's every other quality album run count as being consistent? I think Snoop and Nas fall in this category, too... Does Big's impact make his discography better than Dot's?

7. "Never heard OD. Heard Section.80 - not studied it like major label stuff"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue Apr-18-17 05:48 PM by High Society

heard a bunch of black hippie stuff on youtube
when began to see his name popping up everywhere.

So even though hadn't heard a full project THOUGHT I had heard enough
so when GKMC was about to drop, I was ready.

Now maybe that was a problem because I know people love Section.80
and maybe I would've anticipated how good GKMC could've been
and I might not have been surprised.

But alas when it did drop...

blown the fuck away by GKMC:
- the rapping
- the concept
- the execution of the concept (where most artists any genre have the misstep)
- the ear for the music that he needed to match his vision

so when TPAB came out, was one of my most anticipated albums
and thought gonna be tough for him to match the output
GKMC had been considered a classic by this point by a lot of people
whose, hip hop and music in general, opinions I respect, including myself.

AGAIN... blown the fuck away by TPAB:
- probably more so than I was after sitting with GKMC for a while
- the production:
the LA beat scene, meshed w/ the jazz scene..
the flying lotus, TC, kamasi, knxwledge connections
More Anna Wise, Sounwave and T. Martin killing, also the mix
- Kendrick tackling topics, just SHOWING OFF as an emcee
- again another CONCEPT, another flawless execution

It's a dense record, when I sit with it I listen to it front to back
There are a few songs that I can pick out and just listen to
but I'm an album guy...
My fav artists create music that make me want to listen to the entire project

that said, and there's a THEME here...
2 weeks ago when a new Kendrick album was announced and it'd be here
soon... can check the tape... I'm in threads on this board
saying I'm not sure we need a new Kendrick album
because again wasn't sure if he could come back strong so soon
after TPAB even though it's been 2 years.

again I'm blown away by Kendrick and his ability.
He raps better than anyone on the planet.

In terms of strictly RAPPING... he's top 5 all time with:

Black Thought
Pharoahe Monch
Royce 5'9
probably Eminem as much as it pains me to say bc his music sucks so bad

but it's not JUST the raps... he's made another ALBUM.
It's focused, it's concise. It's not as thematic as the others
but there's a narrative and concept.

The production on this one is more current, not exactly "mainstream"
but his Kendrick's take on the popular sound.

And he sounds just as comfortable bouncing and bopping on these beats
as he did on hard LA beat scene / new jazz scene soundscapes.

As far as hiphop is concerned ...
His run and I'm only count his major label albums...
I know PLENTY people would count Section.80
which I've heard just not with the focus as the others..

He's up there with Outkast, Tribe, Ice Cube and WU-TANG CLAN
There are some more artists who could be lumped in here
but it depends on if we're talking 2 albums, 3 albums, etc.

Kanye..
and Kanye, while CD was AMAZING when it dropped
hasn't aged well. It's in my lower 2 or 3 Ye albums.
(that's another topic for another day)

Kendrick has slid into my top 10 this week
and if he continues to make amazing music like he is
and I hope he does... I want someone to push someone out of my top 5
because that means as a fan I'm getting to enjoy incredible music..

Kendrick can be in any discussion when talking catalog
and back to back to back records from jump.

8. "he's in my "conversation""
In response to Reply # 0

Nostalgia is nice and all, but if he doesn't deserve to be in "the conversation" after 6 years (7 if you count OD, though that was only good) of great to classic (yes I said it and I don't say it lightly) albums + iconic performances + being respected by the mainstream/underground and collaborating with both....then I'd have to throw a lot of people out of my top 20 list.

edit: now I'm going to ramble a lot about a lot of artists:

in regards to the consistency, I honestly can't think of anyone on this level consistently outside of OutKast - and Idlewild was disappointing...and tbh so was Speakerboxx/The Love Below in comparison to Stankonia. Masta Ace doesn't have a bad album, but doesn't have as high highs. Wu Tang (as a group) do not have this good as a run but they do if you count the first wave albums and just count them as RZA albums (which someone did above) but that feels a bit like cheating.

In regards to Kanye, I didn't like, Graduation, 808s, Yeezus, The Life of Pablo

In regards to Scarface I will admit I have not heard The World Is Yours, The Untouchable, My Homies or Last of A Dying Breed, so I can't comment on the run that I assume starts with his debut and ends around The Fix (91-2002; for comparison), which is a great album. I also don't like Scarface as much as I like Kendrick so...

Tribe have a great 4 album run, but then the love movement happened. Same thing applies to De la. In the middle of Common's run (if we start from resurrection) there is a dip in quality (Electric Circus - good album, but...) and Finding Forever was just a dud

Wait - Rakim does have 5 great to classic albums in row though

second edit:

if you count the entire BDP catalogue as great albums (I wouldn't personally, I feel Sex & Violence was a step down, but I wasn't there..I'm 25) and then add his solo career it is 7 great to classic albums in a row for KRS

also I didn't consider The Roots because The Tipping Point (which is a good album..but) was a let down, but of course DYWM to Phrenology is a great run of albums. I also really enjoyed Game Theory to Undun.

i feel i will do some mad making with these sacrilege comparisons around here, but that's where I had to go lol

i got LL Cool J with four stellar albums from his debut and then heäs done.

Redman also had four before dipping in quality.

not sure if Kris Parker's albums with BDP should count as solo, but he's up there.

then it gets very thin on the ground.

He's in my top 10. Definitely one of the (if not the) most consistent of the newer generation. DAMN. has been on repeat since its release.
He actually reminds me very much of Outkast.

For the newer generation, there's no one touching him... That's actually my favorite part about DAMN. is that he basically says that...

Top 10 for sure... And you could argue for other artists to bump him out of the top 10, but they don't have the discography...

Can't front on that at all. Quality project after quality project. I'd argue that this latest album might be his weakest but even this one is still really good.

Regarding the other great catalogues in hip hop you HAVE to mention BDP. To me BDP, Cube, and Outkast all tried to make statements with each album. Artistic statements as to where they were at the time of recording. I appreciate when at artist takes a chance and lyrically challenges the listener. I wish Kendrick did the latter a little more but that's not his thing and that's ok.
