Tyler came the fuck through. the whole vibe of the album is great

as for Gabriel Garzon Montano... had listened to a couple of tracks, when his buzz started and liked them, but went and seen this fool as the Annenberg yesterday and he won me over. been listening to Jardin non stop today. Lightweight Brown Sugar era D'Angelo channeling. Really dig it.

I'm two listens in.

I have no idea how they keep reaching further into outer space musically, and the hip hop swag and intergenerational funk is still present

It may become my favorite album on the year

but he is far more focused, already, when it comes to just writing a song that feels good to listen to. FO has always been about mood and that's cool but Khalid has a little extra something, I'm stoked that he's as young as he is and has that voice and talent with a melody

I wonder what is holding him back... but I mean, people still don't seem to have caught on to Gallant, who imo, put out one of the best albums of last year. It's like if you're not already Frank Ocean, you've gotta be making R&B ala Bryson Tiller for people to take notice.

In response to Reply # 0

Doing a quick skim of my playlists for the year so far, and these dominate:

Bonobo - Migration --- criminally overlooked so far... not sure why.

Sam Amidon - The Following Mountain --- probably his best release since I See the Sign, quite possibly as good. Not willing to say better than, as they are very different albums. But his development over his career has been really fascinating to watch, and the results here are splendid.

Julie Byrne - Not Even Happiness

Rose Elinor Dougall - Stellular

Gabriel Garzon-Montano - Jardin --- I played the shit out of this early in the year.

Gillian Welch - Boots no. 1 --- also largely overlooked, a re-creation of Welch's seminal album with outtakes, live takes, and some unreleased tunes. I wish more artists would approach obligatory anniversaries in this vein, rather than simply remastering (although that's always nice) and adding a few extras to justify a purchase or listen.

Valerie June - Order of Time

Oddisee - The Iceberg --- I'm still waiting for that total album from him, but I can't complain: every release from him gets played to no end, and this one was no exception.

Rhiannon Giddens - Freedom Highway --- I won't say this is the album I want from her, but it's damn good and it's a bit less obviously MOR than her previous solo outings (which were still good). She shows herself as a top-notch writer, too.

Kelly Lee Owens - st

Ibibio Sound Machine - Uyai

Kendrick - DAMN

Feist - Pleasure

Sufjan - Carrie and Lowell Live (this was a surprise --- I never really got into C&L that deep, but I've really enjoyed this record a lot)

Lots of stuff I haven't checked yet, and a number that I'm not quite ready to call favorites but have gotten steady play from me for sure...

the xx - I See You

actually loved this for a month but it sort of grew off me fast. In Colour was my favorite album of 2016 though, so I’ll revisit it later and see if I just overplayed it at first.

Jay-Z - 4:44

Jay fan, but hadn’t cared for his releases much since the Black Album. this is what he should stick too at this point in his career -- concise projects that aren’t attached to a trendy sound.

2 Chainz - Pretty Girls Like Trap Music

the simplicity and brevity of his cameos have always made him a welcome addition to tracks, but I was surprised at how well he carried an entire album. the everyman rapper whose delivery and sense of humor always make me smile.

21 Savage - Issa Album

with Future’s release quantity past its breaking point and his moroseness mostly washed out, all hail the new king of nihilistic rap. Gucci and Metro tried to get there with Droptopwop, but Guwop isn’t suited to it -- 21 Savage has the dead-inside flow and youthful ignorance down pat.

of course this ain’t no DS2, but the brooding, minimalist production and overt despair masked by money and drugs is all there.

The sad shit is that I like Kendrick. He's clearly the best of the new generation but damn, his stans are insufferable.

He's the perfect amount of conscious...enough for the dumb people to think they're smart cuz they get it and enough for the "deep" heads to feel like they can finally like something mainstream.

I'll give it to him for that. He does it perfectly. lol

That doesn't mean his fans aren't insufferable.

Maybe he isn't a stan.

But that's the space Kendrick occupies right now.

Not his fault.

So why do you question anyone who likes DAMN?

You say you like Kendrick...you like DAMN....but you question anyone who also likes it?

Is it just that you don't think it should be listed as an AOTY contender?

I do like the album.

It's hard to believe people don't see the bulletproof reviews this guy gets.

He is in a space where you can't say anything negative about him. People feel like they have to like Kendrick right now.

I get it, he's better than the rest of the popular MCs by a mile, but DAMN is far from a flawless record like many people are acting like it is.

Listen to someone like Rosenberg lick this dudes balls every chance he gets. That's what people sound like talking about Kendrick.

And it's always see-through because Kendrick has some shit on this album like Love and God that people talk shit about Drake for doing...yet all of a sudden it's genius because Kendrick did it.

Iv'e always thought Kendrick was supremely talented but I never particularly liked any of his albums until this one...so no, I'm not a Stan, sorry to disappoint. lol wtf

DAMN. was just so good it was my first ever iTunes purchase. It reminded me of the best of Outkast. not saying it's on that level overall, def. not as cohesiveness of their best albums, but the same level of creativity.

peace

He really can't grasp the idea of subjective taste.

I don't think he's a bad dude, he just can't wrap his head around people not agreeing with him on everything.

I'm actually the opposite of you- DAMN didn't grab me quite like the others.

I like it...I think it is really good...but he's got a few clunkers on there that mess up the flow in my opinion. Especially compared to his others.

Then again FEEL alone is worth 12 bucks, ya know?

I can hear you...lol

I can grasp subjectivity very easily.

It's the hypocrisy I have an issue with.

I wish people were just fully honest.

You claim it's me not understanding people liking something I don't.

I'm saying, don't shit on some of these new artists for these "clunkers" you speak of and then turn around and praise Kendrick for them.

with no context whatsoever in regards to that person's opinion (this poster didn't even like Kendrick's past albums like that).....every single time someone mentions DAMN as one of their AOTY........I just don't see the point in that lol. But we've had this argument before so.....*shrugs*

"love" and "god" are trash though, so at least we agree there lol

I liked the previous one, but this one got to me a little more - I had heard the track "The Highest Flood" on Benji B, I think, and was pretty struck by it at that time; the album itself has settled well. Lots of cool work with the vocal samples, epic-feeling at times. Emotive/tragic/inspiring/etc. Strong feelings.

Sounds a lot different than his first album, more live instrumentation and less programming, which I love because he's better on the drums than he is on the MPC.

Thundercat-Drunk
Moonchild-Voyager
Chicano Batman-Freedom is Free
Little Dragon-Seasons High
Kendrick Lamar-DAMN.
DJ Harrison-HazyMoodz
GGM-Jardin

And DAMN. and Sesaons High are placeholders, in all honesty, as I don't think either album is that act's best work.

As I said in the album post...it feels a little long even though I don't dislike any of the tracks.

But after 12 years I understand the 18 tracks.

But if this was 13 or 14 it would be a ridiculously flawless album.
