"Digging spots in your city."

Thinking about hittin' the open road on a digging tour this summer. I don't expect anybody to set out their hidden gems, but I'd like to know where I should hit in your fair city. mostly looking for wax, but cool CD spots are ok too. Put the city in the subject line and list a few spots if you could.

Reckless Records ( there's several locations, but the one in Wicker Pk is pretty good )

Dusty Groove ( Best record store in the Midwest, IMO)

Hyde Park Records ( Best Rare Groove section around town. You're gonna pay up for it though)

Second Hand Tunes

Is K-Starke Records still open? Super nice owner. Always had great 12"s, Italo, disco edits, etc. Had a variety of nice LPs, too...at least he did ten-ish years ago. Definitely worth a drop by if rolling through Chicago, IMO.

The last two had live music going on.

The only RSD release I got was the Jay Dee Motor City vinyl.
I couldn't pass on the packaging.

Saw this girl with Prince's 1999 at Dustygroove.
I almost followed her around the store to see if she'd put it back.
She didn't.

Finally copped Madvillain on vinyl. Dude that rung me up at Reckless was hyped as shit.
We talked about the album the entire time he rung me up. Kinda tight.

But yeah, most of the stuff I got I could copped on any other day.
While I do kinda dig colored vinyl, it's not the end all.
Plus picture vinyl joints aren't a big deal to me.
If a new artist drops a new album w/ a colored vinyl release, I'll cop.
But a colored vinyl release of Stevie's Innervisions? Naw, I'm good.

I went back on Sunday, it was quiet and peaceful.

Man, I LOVE the new store. The old one was cool, but the new space is way larger, well lit, and cleaner. It's perfect.

Got a stack sitting on my desk that I just picked up at lunch. I ain't giving away my come-up spots, but if you're ever in Philly I'll take you around. I never have anyone to dig with.

These are the record stores I frequent:

- Repo Records on South
- Rustic Music on 10th
- Beautiful World Syndicate on Passyunk

Every other spot I go to is a thrift or second--hand spot.

I want to check this out one day, but I need a portable turntable first, as well as a least a full day with nothing to do and maybe a few other dudes to dig with me. Looks like the type of spot where you have to UNPACK boxes of records just to dig through dozens of Andy Williams & Connie Francis records, hoping to find that ONE.

Their vinyl is way overpriced though.

Nowhere.

Seriously.

This place kinda sucks for records, which is shocking considering our history and reputation. There was definitely some shit here before Egon arrived in the mid-late 90's, but he turned this place upside down and its been slim pickings ever since IMO, especially with the flood of information on the internet.

The Great Escape, if they don't just put it on their ebay page immediately, sometimes has nice stuff on the wall for very reasonable prices (usually half of what you'd pay on Discogs). They have multiple patrons who hit that spot EVERY DAY though, so you have to get lucky.

Grimeys gets the most pub in Nashville, but for used records it's pretty dismal. Slow turnover. Great for new records and reissues though, if you're in the mood for that.

I've always loved Phonoluxe but there are RARELY any deals to be found in there. They get good records all the time but you're gonna pay full Discogs/Popsike prices.

Thrifts will occasionally offer some interesting private-press stuff. Bring a portable for sure.

If you come here for the food and atmosphere and let records be a bonus, you'll love this place. In terms of record stores with consistently dope stuff in stock, especially on the 45 tip....MEMPHIS is the king in Tennessee.

Academy Records, I recently spotted Ox The Architect of Soundsci and Amir of Kon & Amir there. A nice area of the East Village which other good vinyl spots like A-1 and Good Records reside.

Uptown between 80th & 79th streets & Broadway you'll find Westsider Books, a small and friendly bookstore with a nice vinyl selection.

Every month there is a vinyl convention at a hotel on 57th st btwn Broadway and West End aves. This is the first place I ever went digging for records as a teen and over the years ran into Da Beatminerz and Diamond D.

In Brooklyn check out neighborhoods like Flatbush where they have West Indian communities, you might find some Jamaican mom & pop record shops still standing.

Big City Records (formerly Sound Library) used to be in the East Village and is now in Jersey
Iris Records in Jersey

and last but not least, my Discogs!

Yeah man!

Joint Custody
Red Onion (a few doors down from Joint Custody)
Smash
Som Records

All 4 of these places are in walking distance of each other. Joint Custody is a must. Those Just In bins are always flames.
