"It's time again....a Steely Dan post"

Haven't seen one in quite a minute. I always have some SD in reach, but this week I've been going especially hard on the "Pretzel Logic" album. So...no real format. Favorite songs, favorite albums...seen them in person? Whatever. Last night I was at the eye doctor and "Kid Charlemagne" came on. When it got to the "did you realize...that you were a champion in their eyes?" part, I had the biggest grin on my face. It's crazy what that song was actually about, though. If I was forced to name my top 5 SD songs, I'd prolly go:

5. Any Major Dude Will Tell You
4. Hey Nineteen
3. Time out of Mind
2. Pretzel Logic (the guitar solo...GEEZ!)
1. Haitian Divorce

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

My favorite Steely joints:

5. Night By Night (Jeff Da God)
4. Bodhisattva
3. Home At Last (Purdie Da God)
2. Hey Nineteen
1. Aja

One funny thing about "Pretzel Logic", in the '70s when they toured, Michael McDonald was part of their line up and he would always sing the "I stepped upon the platform" part... and that was DOPE!!!

Steely Dan was damn near all I listened to when I was outta high school... every time I hear Countdown to Ecstasy (the album) I think of going up I-77 to Charlotte

the production secrets? (i think the documentary was on Aja, but they zoomed in on that one song for a bit). talking about how they had michael mcdonald singing basically piano chords.

incredible.

especially when you considered that he took that steez into his solo career and birthed a lotta other cats' styles offa that.

In response to Reply # 0

Great lists. My basic top 5 would change too much so let's try something different....

The top 5 sad, heavy, super depressing (but wonderfully so) Steely Dan songs:

1. Charlie Freak
2. Doctor Wu
3. The Royal Scam
4. Barrytown
5. Deacon Blues

>1. Charlie Freak

mostly because of Ed Green's half-beat shuffle (which Jeff Da God admittedly took and ran with for the years following)

but yeah, that is a really depressing song. that was a great list.

i was hoping that on one episiode when TOny was driving his SUV that "time out of mind" would be playing on that Jersey highway.

I mean Michael Mcdonald on them vocals and Mark Knoffler on guitar was sweet.

Growing up my Dad would always play PL in the car and sing along to it and I fucking hated it so much. It was awful old Dad music. I would always put headphones on to drown it out. Later I realized it was the jam and became a big Steely Dan fan.
