In response to Reply # 55

He just can't seem to put together a great full length that matches his level of talent.

Production is always off.

Concepts aren't always executed well.

There's always just something not right about his albums in my opinion.

Internal Affairs is dope but is filled with battle rap joints. Queens, The Light, and The Truth are dope and the best songs on the album. Rape and The Ass are utterly terrible concepts with poor execution. The rest of the album is battle joints and there's really no flow to the sequencing.

Desire has some high points but is an odd listen. Body Baby and Bar Tap just don't work. Trilogy is an over reaching pointless story joint that has 0 replay value. And again, sequencing just has no flow.

WAR - I like this album but the production is on and off. Probably my favorite album of his if I'm honest. It's the most tame album and he sticks to what he does best here. Still; just a lack of great songs. Nothing stands out to the point of being a hip hop classic.

PTSD - this was cool but the production was not there. The concept started to tie together better with this one but ultimately had very little replay value outside of a few songs. I feel like I'm always listening to a song he's already made before. Some real highs here like the joint with Thought and The Jungle which further proves that he needs to stick to a one producer format. Maybe even link up with Marco Polo for an entire album and let him arrange the whole thing.

I listen to those The Roots albums more than the others listed (except Common's 3rd thru 5th albums), I'm surprised he didn't list them but I guess with this being their site, it's probably a logical choice so he ruled them out.

I didn't care much for The Predator either. Even gave it a spin a few months ago and it didn't age nearly as well. But between AMW, KAW and DC, Cube was the best MC on the planet, and those records still hold up. Even though Kill at Will was an EP its still better than a lot of LPs out, now and then. It was definitely better than Predator

I would normally say Pharoahe Monch, as far as one of my favorite emcees but I didn't care for some of the songs on "Desire"; and I would also pick Gang Starr but I don't care for their 3rd album "Daily Operation" as much as their other albums, I like EPMD, but every album had at least one weak joint on them; and I don't like outkast, so that rules them out.

So I guess my pick would have to be Common, but I wouldn't chose his 2nd to 4th, I would pick his 3rd to 5th albums instead.

I might give 5 songs a spin from that album now. Just doesn't sound as good as I thought when it was released.

I opt to be thankful that Hip Hop has produced so many great ones. It's amazing to me because there are so many different styles to choose from, and there is a high quality mark to be found just about everywhere.

His mixtapes since then have been on some legendary status. His two official releases - DS2 and EVOL - are on their own. The new one, Future, dropped last night and so far has me thinking his three album commercial release run should be listed here too. We'll see in a few months if this stands true.

Others who are very, very close...

ATCQ - First 3
De La Soul - First 3 or even #2 through #4
Roots - DYWM, Illadelph Halflife, Things Fall Apart
Kanye - First 3
Common - Resurrection, One Day..., Like Water for Chocolate
Scarface - Mr. Scarface is Back, The World is Yours, The Diary
Eric B. and Rakim - first 3 albums

Probably a lot of great ones I'm forgetting, but Outkast is the clear cut winner for me.
