The album has a general "f/Kamasi Washington" appended to every track (on Itunes, at least). Apparently he's been a steady presence on this group's records since their beginning in 2012.

The group is new to me; I'd heard of them when Washington's album came out but hadn't checked for them yet. Heavy rock/punk and jazz mashup excursion. Kamasi's playing is really at the foreground of a lot of the material, so fans should dig it.

The rock aspect is subdued at first on the album but comes out more aggressively starting on the fourth track, "Flux and Solder":

Haven't listened yet, but the line-up promises and description suggests only good things... sounds like something worth listening to as a whole, as a suite, rather than individual tracks/songs.

Tracklist is interesting: a handful of originals, the rest are (mostly) contemporary tunes with wide representation: a Gillian Welch tune, Scarlet Town (kudos for that); Dylan, Don't Think Twice; some Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, Elliott Smith.

Only listened to Scarlet Town and Independence Day (Elliott Smith) so far --- Nonesuch only has two or three of the tracks streaming right now, so it will be a minute before I get to the whole thing. Thile is singing here (Mehldau a little, too!) --- playing is top-notch, as expected. Mehldau's playing gets deep and dirty, pulling out the blues in the tune as much as the bluegrass. They even manage to segue nicely into a double-time section that turns a usually slow, dark, meditative tune into an unlikely romp for a minute.

Was worried this might be too jammy for my tastes, but their chemistry seems solid.

Edit: this actually isn't officially released until this Friday.

I have seen the WCGD live (Kamasi's tour the year of the epic) so I knew this was going to be a soul album. Miles performed two songs off of this then and they sounded good enough live, but I think I might be being generous when I say this album is decent. He has a voice that suits this type of music and is a great bassist - love the moments here when his bass takes center stage, the effects he uses on it are dope, but this doesn't happen often enough in the record IMO (I mean, it's clearly one of his strengths, why not use it?). The songwriting (in reference to lyrics AND song structure) generally shifts between generic, corny and at times flat out mediocre. I guess "More Than This" is my favorite track - really like the instrumental switch up mid song on that tune, but again...the songwriting. "Fire" and "Sky High" stuck out to me as particularly bad. He is a great musician though, so I'll still check for whatever he does next I guess

I've only listened once and had similar reactions all the way through...

And yet by the end, I felt like I was on the edge of getting it and appreciating it.

Not sure that I can explain this right, but it very much felt like a studio musician's solo outing to me. Which sounds like a diss, but I don't mean it as a diss.

The songwriting (sans lyrics) very much felt like a throwback, mostly in a good way.

Dude's voice reminded me so much of a singer-songwriter named Vance Gilbert that I had to google to make sure it wasn't him...

But some pretty bad lyrics combined with the sense that most of the tunes never really hit the way they were supposed to --- left me less than satisfied. I do plan to go back for one or two more spins though... if only to figure out what it is that doesn't quite work...

One song - I can't remember which - the chorus almost straight lifts a riff from The Wiz's Ease on Down the Road, so there's that. I definitely hear a theater element, which isn't necessarily a turn-off for me, but just doesn't come together here...

Listened again - probably won't return to it any further. I do wonder if the material might work better live - a number of tunes sound like they're building to break loose but never really make it there. Abraham is probably the best thing on the record. I kind of like Shadow of Doubt, but I think that's because it *so* reminds me of Vance Gilbert that I can hear him going to town on it with just a guitar and his voice...

I don't mind corniness, even when it's obvious, but there is something about the general execution here that just doesn't jive well with me.

when I first heard Abraham, the song popped with an energy that's hard to replicate in a studio for some artists. I think Miles Mosley might fit into that box where you'll go see him play because you he's bringing the fire but the studio version might not go quite as hard.

I still like most of the songs but, as you've already mentioned, the songwriting definitely sticks out as uneven. I still think the music on the album makes the album okay....just not great.

Lots of stuff caught my eye in the last few weeks. A few items:

** Miguel Zenon - Tipico
He’s become an auto-listen for me, plus I’ve been leaning hard into latin american & caribbean music lately (whether direct or inspired by or having roots in), so really looking forward to giving this a serious listen. First impressions from a skim: “Academia” and the title track both boast seriously complex rhythmic structures and meters that nevertheless become infectious earworms in their own right. Should be good.

** Nicholas Payton - Afro-Caribbean Mixtape
I haven’t listened to a lot of Payton but I didn’t really expect anything like this from him based on what I do know: the two tracks I listened to are long, somewhat jammish — even almost dub-like - spacey sort of numbers, with scratched, sampled spoken vocals mixed in here and there. Liked what I heard though. Coincidentally, Payton was also an early member of the SFJazz collective, like Zenon. (Still don't forgive him for that Black Messiah review though...)

** Paolo Fresu & Uri Caine - Two Minuettos (Live in Milano)
Judging by the tracklist of jazz standards, classical interventions, and the unexpected pop tune and originals, should be a tight set. (But there’s very little Caine could ever do wrong in my eyes…) Only listened to the All I Want (yes, Joni

** Matthew Shipp Trio - Piano Song
Read somewhere this is Shipp’s retirement record or something? I don’t know his work super well but have been dipping into it more the last year or two. If anyone wants to school me on their fav Shipp works, go for it.

** Club D’Elf - Live at Club Helsinki
I never heard of these guys, but I saw the tracklist for this somewhere and got curious. Googled them and the first hit description says “Moroccan dosed psychedelic dub jazz collective” — so I’m in at least in for a listen, lol. A skim suggests it might be a bit on the jammy side. John Medeski on guitar throughout.

Just two quick notes:
- Clap! Clap! is an Italian producer with a new album out, A Thousand Skies --- I listened through it on a long walk the other night and def worth checking out. Definitely on the "-ish" side of a jazz-ish equation: crazy interesting mix of samples and live performance with a heavy infusion of (pan-?)African rhythm and arrangement, even instrumentation. Not sure how he got it so right, but some songs feel like a straight up live, late night jam session.

- From last year, but I'm just listening to Myele Manzana's "OnePointOne," a live album from last year. New name to me but he's in the mix of lots of names we like around here (Mochilla/Miguel Atwood-Ferguson/Marcus Strickland, think I saw Mark de Clive Lowe mentioned in connection with his name, too). His drumming is ridiculously good and engaging, but he's clearly working with some wonderful musicians on this record, too --- someone on (electric?) violin is killing it, for one thing. Something for everyone on this thing: really nice hybrid of beat-oriented and improvisational...

First major jazz release for the year. It sucks this isn't getting more pub, because after Glasper and Kamasi, I feel like Christian Scott is that dude. But I guess he doesn't have the connections with bigger non-jazz artists like those two do.

Pianist from Kamasi's album - the cover art is horrible but the music is lovely (at least based on one listen). A lot in tune with The Epic but more piano-forward, even more acoustic-ish (no rhodes!). Less explicitly soul-jazzy but still a lot going on: great players, strong melodies, and lots of space for improvisation from all involved.

Iyer is also one of my favorites right now, Break Stuff was a great trio record and his duet album was Wadada Leo Smith was incredible music, great use of space and tension on that record. Some of my other favorites right now are Mary Halvorson (Away With You), Cecile McLorin Salvant/Aaron Deihl (For One To Love) and Kamasi (The Epic). There have been some great records dropping recently.

Halvorson is a guitarist who hangs around with people who play in the "avant-garde" (for a lack of a better word) scene in NYC. Her style is pretty off-kilter and unique - it's definitely not for everybody - often uses this cool delay pedal that gives her notes a "dropping" kind of sensation. She has been adding to her band for years and her latest and best album is called "Away With You", her band on it is an Octet and has a great pedal steel player on it (Susan Alcorn). Other great albums by her are "Dragon's Head" (debut trio album) and "Meltframe", which is a great solo guitar album.

Cecile McLorin Salvant is a fantastic vocalist and the Aaron Diehl Trio has been her band on her past two albums. For One To Love is her most recent and best - it features a good amount of self written tunes like "Left Over", "Look At Me" and "Monday" that are some of her best songs IMO. Aaron Diehl is a great pianist and has released two quality albums with his trio as well that are pretty much just as good as each other, "The Bespoke Man's Narrative" (which has a great version of "Moonlight In Vermont") and "Space Time Continuum". I saw them live earlier this year - they were fantastic.

They've been touring a lot. They've come around Detroit at least 3 times in the past year (though, granted, they both record for local label Mack Avenue Records), so def worth checking them live if you can.

But I think that's because I wasn't listening as an album, just checking in here and there... but after spending time with it while working outside last week, I've kept it on steady repeat. The first half especially is really well executed (I especially like Time Will Tell - beautiful melody and development - could listen to that alone over and over and not get bored - reminds me of the clean, evocative harmonies on some of Abdullah Ibrahim's compositions).

Some first listen reactions:

Thundercat's brother. This, like Miles Mosley's record (though this is better), is disappointing coming from a member of the west coast get down. I'm not saying they all have to set out to make spiritual jazz The Epic tracks, but the R&B stuff, which dominates the majority of the LP is kind of just middle of the road. He doesn't have that good of a voice either and the lyrics aren't good, though there are some nice grooves there. That said, the longer instrumental tracks, "Geome Denome", "Chicks Web" and "Open The Gate" where the band really goes in, are fantasitc.

Jason Moran, the acclaimed pianist and composer, recognized the potential here. As the Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., he commissioned a concert program called "Muldrow Meets Mingus." It took place earlier this year at the Kennedy Center's Crossroads Club, and Jazz Night in America was there for the rehearsals as well as the world premiere, which featured audacious musicians like alto saxophonist Darius Jones, trombonist Ku-umba Frank Lacy and drummer Karriem Riggins."

Have a couple to swing back through and add here, but near the top of the list is Jaimie Branch's "Fly or Die" ...

Branch is a stalwart trumpet player of the Chicago scene (in the same networks as folks like Matana Roberts and Tomeka Reid).

The album is a solid mix of styles, some "out there" stuff, some more accessible groove-oriented stuff, all of it engaging. Good line-up too: Tomeka Reid on cello, Jason Ajemian on bass, Chad Taylor on drums. It's a short record at 35 minutes (something I appreciate). Definitely worth a listen.

Yussef Kamaal's "Black Focus" album is pretty good. I recommend it.

My listening has been really wonky lately due to some random stuff I'm dealing with, but was thrilled to take some time to catch up on new releases this morning and find a new album from Ambrose Akinmusire --- a live one at that. It's called "A Rift in Decorum: Live at the Village Vanguard"

About to put it on now...

A few others I haven't checked out yet but are on my list:

- DeJohnette has a new project with Larry Grenadier and Medeski and Scofield called "Hudson" --- really interesting trackiist on this one with a number of tunes drawn from 60s/70s rock-ish (Dylan, Hendrix, Joni, The Band).

- There's a crazy looking project called "The Passion of Charlie Parker" that looks a tribute with a stunning recurring ensemble of Craig Taborn, Donnie McCaslin, Ben Monder, Scott Colley, and Eric Harland. Guests (vocalists) include Gregory Porter, Madeleine Peyroux, Kurt Elling, Melody Gardot, and others. So yeah, this could be legit.

- Collab album from Avi Avital and Omer Avital (unsurprisingly called "Avital meets Avital") is out on Deutsche Grammophone --- I like Omer Avital a lot, so this will definitely be on the playlist...

But yeah, new Ambrose Akinmusire!!!

New album from Tyshawn Sorey w/his trio called "Verisimilitude" out today (I think). And as I'm listening earlier, I run across this article from NYT:

I've only just started listening to his work over the past few months - I'd been digging his 2016 record, "The Inner Spectrum of Variables," and knew of him through some other acts (Iyer, Lehmann), but knew very little about him. He definitely sits in that sweet spot of composition informed by the best of 20th c. art music and avant garde ish ---- the NYT article mentions Morton Feldman, who I literally thought of while on the tune "obsidian" today...

Anyhow, really enjoyed my first listen and makes me want to dig into Sorey even further.

The first one is more MPC stuff and less live drumming, but he's a talented beatmaker. His Scrapbook beat album is pretty dope too.
