after going for a long period of time where i hadn't given myself the proper allotment of 'music listening' time, recently i plugged in some headphones and gave my soul some much needed fuel, inspiration and joy by just listening to some great damn music...so i was coming in here to post a long overdue appreciation post to Meshell when i saw your post. My own, probably longwinded, Meshell appreciation post is likely still coming, but i since i think you've summed it up in such a nice concise way, i'll prequel my own post by cosigning yours, especially this part here that really hits the nail on the head:
>"Her sincerity and talent and all-around artistic sensibility reflect what I look for most in those artists that really stick with me...">
co-effin-sign. like i said. more to come on why i co-sign in every way, and why i think...nah not why i think, why i KNOW we MUST gather-up and digest and appreciate the works (both officially released works and unofficial more obscure works) of this truly inspired and pure genius in our midst while we are lucky enough to have the opportunity. As 2016 has proven in many many different ways, you never know how good you've got it till its gone, or to quote one of the many Meshell produced tracks i was listening to on my recent return to focusing on music goodness (this particular one with lovely Chaka on the lead): .'...you never miss the water, till the well runs dry...". Drink up people, and SAVOR that soul quenching stuff. I know i am.
As for the 'James Baldwin, Can I Get A Witness' piece...
i myself was not fortunate enough to catch it, however one of my brothers (who was based in NY/Chicago) was able to catch the 'early sketch' of this show last year, and he LOVED it. He was going to try to get tix to this 'official' opening last week, but i think it sold out too fast. reviews i've seen of it have been all stellar, and i'm not surprised...
I'm HOPING it was captured in some manner so that the rest of us might be able to check it out too, but like a LOT of her most interesting stuff, sometimes her greatest things are just put out there for the moment itself and, unless some fan happens to capture it and shares it, some of it will be gone forever except for in the recollections of those who were in the room where it happened...
