Did not know he was capable of this. Honestly have never really dug his stuff, but loved the two singles and he didn't disappoint with the full LP - as you said the P Funk/Funkadelic influence is all over this one.

I'm not into that whole pressure to make an LP more than what it needs to be. I played the LP twice in a row and I loved it. It sounded like what PFunk should sound like in 2016 even with all the reaching back. It didn't feel phony or forced and I imagine it'll sound good on a system. I'll be playing this a lot.

"Baby Boy" sounds a lot like Sly Stone's "Just like a Baby" down to the guitar riffs and arrangement.

I hear the Pfunk comparisons...wouldn't really make a direct comparison....it's more a Pfunk "vibe" than actually sounding like Pfunk....

but it's really solid... and he gets props from me for going in this direction...

the comparison that I would draw would be to Kokane in terms of the the vocals and style...his delivery and vibe is very similar to what Childish Gambino is doing on this...particularly the stuff Kokane has done recently with Ishan Cooper....

When the first two songs dropped, I thought they were kind of tongue-in-cheek pastiches, but hearing the concept sustained over the length of an album, you can't question his commitment.

I mean this is a dope record but Black Messiah (and the rest of D's stuff) is on another level for me, Gambino really showed his talent here - and shocked me, but he isn't seeing D' vocally or writing wise.

do you mean melodic construction, lyrical ingenuity or content?

I'd say Childish wins on all three counts, but I'd love to hear your take.

More than anything I'd say I'm focusing on melodic construction. I feel like on this album (Gambino's), more than on anything D'Angelo has done really, in terms of the construction of the tunes at times it feels almost as if a fan made it in homage to Funkadelic/Sly as opposed to just making an album on its own terms (the album is still great though, don't get me wrong). Whereas I have never gotten that feeling from a D'Angelo project. I've also pretty much always, since I first heard D', been a huge fan of his melodies and never really looked that deep into his lyrics, so I can't really comment on the other two aspects.

I've always felt he's at his best on ballads and mid tempos like Me and Those Dreaming Eyes of Mine, Send it On, Another Life etc.

When he tries to get "funky," he falters.

I like the melodies Gambino is working with here, and even more than that, the harmonies (I think harmony is D's main wheelhouse, though).

"getting funky" ...on record or live on stage if we're talking about "current" (or semi-current) artists....

track record....album and tour accolades.... and his fellow contemporary artists all pretty much agree on this...

a "rapper" making an "experimental album" that is really well done is all good...but let's not make crazy comparisons

Considering Quest saying he woke D up at 4 in the morning b/c he was blown away by the album.

I've already listened to some of these Gambino songs more than I ever played Black Messiah. But I'll go relisten. I just wasn't that impressed...especially since Really Love was on there and we'd had that song for 7 years (not D's fault, just a meh moment for me)

I DON'T think this is what D was going for with Black Messiah. Two different artists with two different approaches.

I appreciate both albums for what they are. I love Donald but cmon my breh D still made Voodoo. I don't see D making something like Stand Tall but I also don't think Donald could convincingly pull off a song like Shit, Damn, Motherfucker or Africa.

That's how we roll on OKP.

The formula is;

Find a newer artist that gets average to minimal love + Select a well-known artist that OKP is known to love + Praise newer artist at expense of well-known artist by shitting on that artist in attempt to shed light on the newer artist.

Works every time.

for the PFunk karaoke.

it's not like D'angelo is not borrowing heavy but he got his own strong twist on it. can't say tis about this record after one listen.

this reminds me more of Raphael Saadiq doing the retro stuff but with inferior songwriting and musicianship skills.

>this reminds me more of Raphael Saadiq doing the retro stuff
>but with inferior songwriting and musicianship skills.

I had the same thought.

Which isn't to say the album is bad. It's actually pretty good.

But Saadiq's retro stuff works because he's so good at it - but in other's hands, that imitation-as-style can really feel like a novelty. (Even in Saadiq's hands it sometimes feels trite.)

That said, I think we should know by now that the two major D'Angelo camps on the boards don't see eye-to-eye on anything, and one of those things is D's supposed karaoke-ness. (I've never understood that argument w/D --- I hear the past as influences for him, not templates --- esp. on Voodoo and Black Messiah. But there's no real meeting of the minds to be found re: D's originality around here...)

At the end of the day, I'm not sure we need to talk about D at all when assessing this record. It's a fine record, I'll keep it in rotation for a while, but it definitely plays as "paint-by-numbers" for me...

And I'm definitely not convinced it would sound better.

Black Messiah is a pretty strong record, but it was greeted with the same "absence makes the heart grow fonder"-type response that Voodoo got. When I go back and listen to it after the shock factor (meaning it took him 35 years to make it) wore off, I don't find it particularly overwhelming.

This Childish Gambino record sounds amazing from the jump, and I've never heard a single CG song before I played it. I own lots of Funkadelic though, and this sounds like a legit ATL interpretation of that sound. Very impressed.

I feel like I should say something along the lines of "no disrespect to D'Angelo" or something, but honestly, he was the first person I thought of when I heard the first song. This is in the same bag as Black Messiah and it's better.

In response to Reply # 16

D'Angelo's sound isn't just funk, it's jazz, hip-hop, classic rock, a little punk, hell, ever some barbershop quartet thrown in for good measure (Black Messiah anyways).

Childish Gambino did w/ funk what Mayer Hawthorne has done with soul from the 80s, 70s, and 60s on his first three major releases, and very well.

I love both works, but they aren't really comparable to me.

There is nothing on Awaken My Love that gets into my gut like "Aint That Easy" "1000 Deaths" or "Another Life." "Redbone" is very close though.

...I'll just put on Maggot Brain, America Eats It Young, Free Your Mind ..., etc.

I get what he was doing but it still sounds ...I don't know...corny? There's not much soul here. Just really good, sometimes unintentionally comedic mimicry IMO.

Still, his vocals have improved and hats off for going off the beaten path of his usual formula. I feel like he's still finding himself and his sound/aesthetic so perhaps he's closer to the road to self discovery and this is the first step in that.

then I am actually impressed with most of the actual music on the album. Stand Tall stands on its own. The rest doesn't really break too much new ground.

It's an impressive work because we didn't know he had it in him, but not because it moves the genre forward (other than maybe introduce it to new listeners)

Just sat down with it in full again (I've heard it a bunch of times now). The only track I don't dig is "California", which is horrid - "Me and Your Momma", "Stand Tall", "Baby Boy" and "Redbone" are among some of my favorite songs of the year.

That said, upon my first listen when it dropped I - like everyone else - was immediately reminded of Funkadelic, Sly etc., so I understand the criticism that this is getting. Obviously it ain't as good as the classics. It definitely isn't moving anything forward, but at the same time - not everything has to. I'm glad that music like this is getting (some) shine in the mainstream and I hope he continues down this path - I guess I should mention that I think he is a pretty corny rapper lol

I also think I might have to make a Black Messiah versus Awaken Spin-off post because things are getting kinda crazy up there.....

this to us abandoning our own traditions
while others grab on to them and claim
them. Make no mistake that this operates
in the tradition of Black music culture.
It doesn't break new ground, but it
doesn't have to in order to be good.

It does lean on tried and true sounds
very heavily. I had some mixed feelings
about that initially, but I'm fine with
it, because so does alotta other really
good music out there, including alotta
contemporary music over the ages.

I'll take this over sampling, because
with moving in this direction, we can
begin to pick up where the greats left
off instead of simply using them as a
crutch. We should be innovating with
our own talent and instrumentation.
I'm for it.

To be clear tho, I don't think this is
very innovative at all, lol. I just
think it shows that he's a student of
what preceded him, and it seems alotta
our mainstream musicians are dropping
the ball on that front right now.
I appreciate that aspect of it.

I like this. I get it. This could be called p-funk karaoke. But at least he leaned into it and made it his own personal-sounding narrative. It's cool that so many acts are willing to take hard turns in their discography now. And if this ends up being a bridge to the funk for some folks who didn't know, that's even better.

I'm 'late' but whatever. Zombies and Redbone are my favorites.

California may as well be Mamacita, but besides that? I'm all over this and I can't stay away from it for more than a couple days. It also dropped me back into a heavy Funkadelic and Parliament album listening run over the holidays. That alone is grand.

But this album is funk with both feet in on it. And Boogieman says a lot in a short period of time. It's almost sneaky because of the way it is presented but not really...pfunk again.

This thing is an accomplishment and a sneak attack from Glover. It seems like the type of thing we ask some artists to do but then don't show proper love when they actually sack up and do it.
