Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Announces New Album December 99th

Bey’s collaborative project with Ferrari Sheppard will be released on December 9

Dec. 99th is the collaborative project of Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and the producer Ferrari Sheppard. Today, the duo have announced their debut album, December 99th, out December 9 exclusively on Tidal. According to a press release, they “spent the last year recording in South Africa” while Yasiin Bey “awaited his departure from the country.” The album was produced entirely by Ferrari Shepard, and it includes the previously released “Local Time,” “N.A.W.,” and “Seaside Panic Room.” Check out the album’s tracklist and artwork below.

Earlier this month, Yasiin Bey announced his final performances in the United States, and was granted permission to leave South Africa after being detained in the country for most of 2016. In January, shortly after announcing his retirement from the music and film industry, he was charged with using a false passport and travel document when he attempted to leave the country.

I got an e-mail for pre-sale information for a Yaasin Bey concert and Apollo. I quickly deleted the e-mail because of anger I still have for a Black Star show that was cancelled in NYC roughly 3-4 years ago.

I'm sure someone with a cooler head will provide a link for Yaasin Bey touring info.

I mention all that to say it appears he is actually releasing an album after all.

I have to wonder what his recording music peers think about Yaasin Bey and all the uncertainty around him, especially since the dude is so damn talented.

Just copped a ticket to the Apollo show....

...knowing full well that Yasiin is close to being on that Ms. Lauryn Hill level of non-professionalism and could be 2 hours late, deliver a bootleg show or cancel the whole thing.


Taht being said, I figured I'd gibe him a one last chance becuase he's a beast when he's focused and on hi game.

It was billed as his last ever performance. Apparently due to high demand his "last ever show" became his "penultimate show" as tickets for an extra date were added for the following weekend. I had tickets to the second show. First show was cancelled a few hours before the event. Second show was cancelled a few hours before the event. First show was then rescheduled to two days after the second show was supposed to happen but I don't actually know if that happened or not. I'm guessing it didn't.

So, did anyone stream the album yet? Where does this fall on the scale of Mos Def's prior albums? The masterpiece that was Black On Both Sides or the dumpster bin that was Tru Magic?

Until it's available somewhere besides Tidal. I understand the idea of short-term exclusives for new music in terms of building hype and trying to build a base for a service, but it really sucks for those who want to hear it but aren't trying to hold multiple streaming subscriptions when just one does fine...

Granted, I'm not a Tidal member, but I did a search on the website and I don't see the December 99th album. His Mos Def albums are available, but I don't see this December 99th business. And the J-Cole and Ab Soul releases that were scheduled to drop yesterday are available.

So all in all, it appears Mos/Def/Yasiin Bey's inconsistency remains consistent.

I feel for you folks that plopped down cash for his upcoming concerts. Hell, perhaps he'll actually show up and reveal where Jimmy Hoffa was buried. Who knows with this cat.

I can't find any news on it, not even announcing it's been delayed.

Love Mos, but the unreliable type of career he's had is frustrating. It's what made me wait to get those Apollo tickets, and not be disappointed when I saw it was sold out.

I'm already tuned out for this release...
