"Eminem "Campaign Speech""

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvqYabGI6HQ

He should have been a little more serious, it's the Eminem I expect but he could have made a powerful song, can't lie though, I'm laughing at some of these punchlines. The beat is so minimal it's almost a capella.

Damn....wanted the turn the station so bad, but I LOVE Em as an emcee (that's it...not a beatmaker..not a full album maker). It was just too much. It was witty ish all throughout. It's just.....*sigh*..."Look at me...I'm so good at this, and yet so bored with this gift, that umma do and say whatever I can in the space of each bar. I don't care how it translates".

I couldn't make it through. There's something to be said for musicality and rhythm and Em lost the ability to make that type of music a long time ago.

I get that the point of this *wasn't* to be musical or rhythmic (like someone in here said, it's like a spoken word rather than a song) but this is just the latest in a looooooong list of examples of him not caring for any kind of rhythm or beat.

For Free is a focused spoken word piece with interesting jazz musical landscape behind it that follows Kendrick's dynamics.

This Em bullshit is not on topic and is over the same monotone beat.

Gift of Gab does the same shit and been
doing it longer. Frankly, I think he's
better at it. He's just a jolly and
positive dude who never rapped about
stomping pop stars out or killing
his babymama so he's not controversial.

That said, Em spit fire and it was fun listen. Folks getting all bent of of shape about this are hating for the sake of hating.

I meant just spitting for long lenghts of consistent rhyme play that just stuns.

I've read through this thread and see that your issue is that it's not the "music" rhyming on time with a beat, that you grew up loving with em. I get that. But that's not what this was intended to be.

A lot of people did it before Em though. That doesn't take away from its impressiveness, IMO.

I'm not sure I'm reading this right. But my gripe is just that after one or two listens and soaking up the wordplay and technical rhyme schemes, which are always amazing on his part, it's hard to go back to "songs" like this because they lack rhythm.

but what I mean there is making the same
rhyme a whole lot over and over within
short spaces over multiple sentences.
That was evident to anyone who's able
to use both sides of their brain (not
solely the left), simply from the way
I wrote the subject line. I could have
said "making the same rhyme" instead of
"saying the same syllable", but I didn't
because I just kinda liked the way it
sounded the way I wrote it, especially
since such blunders are the kinds rappers
often make.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't say something
along the lines of "I see what you're saying,
even though the way you wrote it doesn't
technically make sense", but maybe the
right side of your brain actually doesn't
work as well as the folks who understood
it perfectly fine... because the
context actually corrects the technicality,
yet you replied not once but twice completely
confused, and you're still dumbfounded.
It's explained now, so you can enjoy your
weekend without spending it trying to figure
this out.

Ha OK. This is ... interesting, I guess. I don't really know why this is a bad thing in your eyes though ? Like, rhyming the same sound for a long verse is really impressive no matter how many times it's done (in my opinion, at least).

Like I said I was being unintentionally snarky so I apologize. But even with the explanation, I'm still sorta confused. I guess just confused as to what WOULD impress you lyrically, if someone writing an 8 minute song rhyming two or three sounds the entire time, whilst twisting some words creatively to fit the scheme, doesn't do it for you ? Serious inquiry.

"SECond FLOOR with a cassETTE reCORDer with EDward NORton"

Often none of this stuff serves any
purpose at all in the rhyme other
than the fact that it all rhymes.
It's literally just a bunch of words
that rhyme. I mentioned Gift of Gab
who does the same style... but if
he has a message to deliver, he'll
make sure the message comes through
(such as a song like Deception), but
it's just braggadocio rhyming, he'll
do like Em's doing here (Fabulous Ones)
because the point of the rhyme is
kinda to be random anyway.
It's just like Em does this all the
time.

That's why, as I stated elsewhere in this post, it's only worth listening to once or twice to me. He's saying next to nothing for 8 minutes, and just rhyming words to rhyme them. Agreed entirely.

I still find the dexterity to be impressive, but it's just not something that I'm gonna revisit all that often.

Gift of Gab is an excellent comparison. Not NEARLY as long a song but a good example of this "rhyming the same sound for a long time" style we're discussing is his feature on "All I Need" by L'Orange. He spits an entire verse rhyming the same sound (or at least most of it) but the verse is cohesive and has a point to it. He's not just doing this "lyrical miracle in your swimming pool" thing that Em tends to do, like you said.

This is something me and a friend of mine
used to disagree on about Gab. His opinion
was that he's "too rhymey", so it gets boring
after a few minutes. I didn't agree, but I
understood the criticism.

I hadn't even heard that, so thanks for
putting me on. "Ride of Your Life" was
the song I had in my head earlier, but
couldn't remember the name of it.
Here, he's very "rhymey" but he delivers
it in a pretty interesting way, as he
often does imo, and is actually saying
something with the style which I actually
do find impressive, because it's even harder
to do... not to mention the beat is dope:

Yea I can (obviously) understand that criticism too but like I said with Gab (and it appears you agree) I think the beats his rhymes on and the stories he weaves are far more interesting than what Em has been doing and rhyming on.

Thanks for putting ME on. I had never heard this track but that's really dope. I've actually been meaning to check out this entire album cause I'm a big Gab fan and you just reminded me to do so.

is Em capable of making a full album without the rock anthem songs? is is he under the sales pressure to go 3-4 million at the least?

I don't want like a old school primo type album, but wish he could do something with beats similar to blankface.

but my expectations for em in 2016 seem to be a lot different than most of you guys.

i already know what i'm getting at this point -- these sort of beatless, spoken word-y, free-association technical clinics a la the sway in the morning southpaw freestyle and the shady xv cypher -- and i appreciate it for what it is.

the word wizardry is still there, as sharp as ever. that's really all i'm checking for. i already know he doesn't make great music anymore.

I agree with you mostly. But like everyone in here has been saying, that style only lends itself to one or two listens. It's not actually enjoyable to listen to him, I just do it out of respect for the obvious skill and the time he puts into his lyrical dexterity. But it's a chore.

The magic of his early work was his ability to do both, present his lyrical abilities while still rhyming on beat and making enjoyable overall listens.

what a lot of other rappers do. rhyming for the sake of rhyming. I can deal with rhyming about nothing, but if the beats or music aren't good, it gets harder to keep listening.

it would be nice if he could be more topical or tell good stories, which he can still sometimes do decently. topical is prolly way too much to ask of him at this point. but even with that, it goes back to the bad tracks he chooses.

Exxxxactly. For example I was just listening to "Nasty" today, which is basically just your standard "I rap better than you" type content...but (a) Nas does it in a more interesting and listenable way and (b) the beat is great. So I agree, I can listen to and even love "rhyming about nothing" so long as the music is worth listening to.

As it stands, it sounds like a really long version of one of those "Yo, turn off the beat and listen to me rip this shit!" concert moments. Which I'd be okay with if I saw him do this in concert, but this is apparently a song, so some of music to rap over would be nice.

But yes, he is still extremely dope with the wordplay. No denying that. And at least he's not screaming at me.

Is this even impressive anymore?

We already know he can put words together
for long stretches.

He's basically a more extremely talented Pac in the technical aspect of rhyming now because how many times have we heard the

"...whore / door / norton / contortion / abortion..."

rhyme scheme from Em?

It's his version of Pac's enemy / henessey / friends be / etc

rhyme scheme.

If his next song was called 'soliloquy'....would you still be wondering about the 'beat'?

Look....let's take an example. Domestic violence. You hate the song he did with Rhianna called 'Love the way you way you lie'. Here are the lyrics:

ust gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I can't tell you what it really is
I can only tell you what it feels like
And right now there's a steel knife in my windpipe
I can't breathe but I still fight while I can fight
As long as the wrong feels right it's like I'm in flight
High off her love, drunk from her hate,
It's like I'm huffing paint and I love her the more I suffer, I suffocate
And right before I'm about to drown, she resuscitates me
She fucking hates me and I love it.
"Wait! Where you going?"
"I'm leaving you!"
"No you ain't. Come back."
We're running right back.
Here we go again
It's so insane cause when it's going good, it's going great
I'm Superman with the wind at his back, she's Lois Lane
But when it's bad it's awful, I feel so ashamed I snapped
Who's that dude?
"I don't even know his name."
I laid hands on her, I'll never stoop so low again
I guess I don't know my own strength

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

You ever love somebody so much you can barely breathe when you're with 'em
You meet and neither one of you even know what hit 'em
Got that warm fuzzy feeling
Yeah, them chills you used to get 'em
Now you're getting fucking sick of looking at 'em
You swore you'd never hit 'em; never do nothing to hurt 'em
Now you're in each other's face spewing venom in your words when you spit them
You push, pull each other's hair, scratch, claw, bit 'em
Throw 'em down, pin 'em
So lost in the moments when you're in them
It's the rage that took over,
It controls you both
So they say you're best to go your separate ways
Guess that they don't know you 'cause today that was yesterday
Yesterday is over, it's a different day
Sound like broken records playing over but you promised her
Next time you show restraint
You don't get another chance
Life is no Nintendo game
But you lied again
Now you get to watch her leave out the window
Guess that's why they call it window pane

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Now I know we said things, did things that we didn't mean
And we fall back into the same patterns, same routine
But your temper's just as bad as mine is
You're the same as me
When it comes to love you're just as blinded
Baby, please come back
It wasn't you, baby it was me
Maybe our relationship isn't as crazy as it seems
Maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano
All I know is I love you too much to walk away though
Come inside, pick up your bags off the sidewalk
Don't you hear sincerity in my voice when I talk
Told you this is my fault
Look me in the eyeball
Next time I'm pissed, I'll aim my fist at the drywall
Next time? There won't be no next time!
I apologize even though I know its lies
I'm tired of the games I just want her back
I know I'm a liar
If she ever tries to fucking leave again
Im'a tie her to the bed and set this house on fire
I'm just gonna

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Please post a response of another hip hop song....or ANY other pop song in the history of pop music that YOU think matches the nuance and sophistication of these lyrics about this topic. Garth Brook's sold millions of 'Thunder Rolls'...but that song plays to a very simple narrative. Bad boy, good girl. You find me another top ten song in the HISTORY of pop music that captures the ambiguity and truthiness of 'Love the way you lie'.

If you can't post a response....perhaps you should make a (fucking) list of your top 5 emcees (you love to make these boring lists) and google search what they think about Eminem's writing and lyricism. Because really, your stance on Eminem is more about yourself than it is about his work. And THAT is what provokes me to speak on this matter. There is a reluctance to acknowledge his greatness in the hip hop nerd community. Embrace him. He's earned it.

55. "The craziest thing about common Em critiques...."

is that the critique is the absolute opposite of the truth. Eminem's concepts and subject matter is EXACTLY what made him one of the greatest ever.

His subject matter is what made him stick out.

Now there might be people who don't 'like' his subject matter. But seriously....he talked about shit that noone ever talked about in rap or pop music before him the way he did it. And in a way that was smart, conceptual, clever, all that.

Seriously....if you are a person who says Eminem's subject matter holds him back you have no fucking clue about his artistry and what makes him the biggest selling pop star (not just rap star) of the entire fucking 21st century. In fact...there is NOONE who is in that stratosphere that even dared to approach the subject matter that eminem made his career on.

Domestic violence, child abuse, drug use, drug addiction, clinical depression, suicide, divorce, absentee parents, poverty.

Look who he sits with in terms of record sales. Ain't no Michael Jackson or Beatles or Whitney Houston talking about any of that shit in THAT WAY? Imagine Elton John singing a song about Munchauson's Syndrome?

Subject matter? Shaking my damn head. Eminem is fucking LEGENDARY. The GOAT of subject matter in that top selling pop world. There is literally NOBODY that did it better. EVER. He doesnt' just represent rap to that world....he represents literature itself. He is THE BEST representation of actual literature in the top selling pop artists by the time you arrive at his name down the list. NOONE above him even comes close to his lyricism.

I'll say a few things.

1. This rap specifically is rapping about nothing. He is all over the place with no real train of thought. And I get it...this is a song where he's is just spitting so it is not necessarily needed.

2. What you claim is wide-range of concepts I as nothing more than shock value. Yes, he has rapped on topic before and does at times stay focused. I'm not the critic that says he has no concepts but the critic that says his concepts suck and I don't give a fuck about what he's saying. Em's primary goal when he sits down to create is shock value and I have never respected that from any artist or entertainer for that reason. It's like Tom Green's comedy. The shit is not appealing.

3. Em is much to old to be spitting some of the content in here. I was going to respond to Brew up above but I already know we don't see eye to eye on this. But I can't believe he used Nas as someone to compare when discussing rapping about nothing. Nas covers more topics than almost any MC and definitely successful MC. Yes...much more than Em. And in his example he used Nasty, which is a song about nothing, but even with that example let's analyze. To me, and many people, we rather listen to lyrics about nothing like;
"I come from the Wheel of Ezekiel
To pop thousand-dollar bottles of scotch, smoke pot and heal the people"

Than lyrics about nothing like;
"Dickhead is forced in til there is shredded foreskin
Reddish torn and they're only being fed a portion"

That is the the type of shit that makes us say "the fuck is he talking about."

So again, while you see it as genius levels of concepts, we see it as shock value as bullshit we really don't care to here his rap about.

I was talking only about the specific songs I was talking about. Everything else about Nas covering more subject matter than any MC ever is whatever, you're his biggest supporter on earth, I get that. I wasn't comparing Em and Nas outside of the specific songs I referenced.

So to that end - re: "Nasty" in comparison to a track like this ... based on what you just said above, you agree with me. Cause what I said, if you'll recall, was that Nas says "nothing" in a far more interesting way than Eminem or just about anybody, currently.

Even when they rhyme about nothing, you still get a sense of their personality and by nature listeners connect with MCs they share commonalities with.

As I said, my gripe with Em is not that he raps about nothing, it's about what he raps about. Every MC has song where they just spit. Em just isn't interesting to me because what he just spits about is nonsense...especially for a 40+ year old.

Also, many of Em's verses like this don't follow abnormal thought process. Whereas Nas' Rhymes about nothing are still a clear coherent thought, Em just strings words together and mentions things have have nothing to do with one another.

It's like listening to a drunk friend at a party talking dumb shit. At some point you're going to say, "dude shut the fuck up"

You seem to mixing up "greatest" and "biggest/highest selling"

No snark, you legit seem to be interchanging the two terms.

Well, that and his skin tone, no?

I'll even leave the white elephant in the room alone.

You're right, his subject matter makes him stick out. Because he always goes for shock value.

Now, I think occasional shock value is a good thing, but its one of like 3 total tricks he has in his bag.

He is very intelligent in the way he puts words together, sure. But I have literally never seen anyone try to argue like this for Eminem's "artistry"

Okay, this is where you are straight up being dishonest. Em was huge because of his skin color (sorry, had to), his timing, and his label knew exactly what to do with him.

Oh, he also dissed pop stars. That was cute.

Rap was getting huge, and a lot of white folk felt left out. They finally found someone who they could "relate" to comfortably, I suppose.

But you don't get to hype all that and not realize that had he been black, he'd have been Canibus.

You also forget his reign on top was shockingly short for such a "great" artist and "genius" who also had the machine behind him.

....**blinks**....Ummm, to all of this I'll just say...wow. And, you're wrong.

But, you know, glad you enjoy him. **shrugs**

his last album sold 2 million copies, just three years ago, and every album he's ever released has gone #1 and multiplatinum.

In response to Reply # 60

at no point did Canibus have a MMLP or Eminem Show in him. Those are mostly well-realized concept albums with dense lyrics and impressive wordplay.

At times childish wordplay? Of course. And is there ample reason to believe he doesn't sell 1/4 as many of these albums if he's not white? Totally. But those two albums were pretty impressive.

and this is not to say that eminem's whiteness didn't totally help him. he'd NEVER sell back to back diamond albums if not white, but he still had an ability to make hits that canibus never had.

In response to Reply # 65

Canibus was never a technically great MC like an Em, Monch, or 3000.

He was largely a punchline rapper that attacked the mic on every beat. But he never had the same level of intricate rhyme schemes that other great lyricists have.
