"Best Verses of the Year, so far?"

For me, it's:

1. Black Thought - Making a Murderer
2. Nas - Nas Album Done (First verse)
3. Andre 3000 - Solo Reprise
4. Kendrick Lamar - Untitled 01
5. Jay Z - Drug Dealers Anonymous
6. Kendrick Lamar - Holy Key

A bit of both.

Hip Hop is much more focused on sonics/tone/mood much to my chagrin. I don't mind the new crowd - Travis Scott/Young Thug - where bars are probably not even secondary.

OKP and especially the Lesson is a but unforgiving.

Separate discussion, but I think LA has the best balance of a modern but classic hip hop (Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, Earl, Vince).

I really liked Phonte's verse on "Thru the Night." That Prince Paul/Plugs line was dope as hell.

I'll see your Phonte and raise a Phonte. His guest verses are mean and should warrant their own post.

Just read the lyrics to see what you were referring to. Definitely pretty tame as far as anti-gay sentiments go but still amateur shit to be sure.

I feel like Phonte's got a history of grey area regarding gay slurs and the like ? I can't cite a specific lyric right this second but for some reason I got him pegged for having toed the homophobic line in his lyrics more than once, and possibly even stepping over it a couple times.

But I guess until he issues me a public personal apology...lol

I honestly have not listened to a lot of Phonte. Something about him doesn't grab me. I loved some of his shit with Little Brother as well as the first Foreign Exchange album but something about his presentation keeps me from getting into him.

I know he's dope though.

That's interesting. I bought both The Listening and Minstrel Show when they dropped. But I don't really recall thinking that Phonte was THE standout at the time, though later I started to pick up on the nuances of his verses more and became a huge fan. Have checked out everything he's dropped since and always will. He's one of the best doing it, IMO, but I guess my main point in bringing up the first two LB albums is to kind of agree with you that maybe he doesn't jump right out and grab you til you spend some time focusing on his wordplay.

Have you heard any of his solo work or just random spots here and there ?
