Love him or hate him (im in the later category for the most part) you've got a 19 year old rapper who blew up on a demo song and we are expecting an A tier project out of him, lol.

One of the reasons I think that the ATL scene does so well is that there's a farm team built up around a few acts (primarily Gucci and his producers) that lets the acts hone their work over years.

This record isn't the worst ive heard...his future impression is decent. Theres also times where he's working on a more traditional NYC street voice (Make It Out) to break out from that shadow and the trap production is solid.

But it's a bit depressing how we've adapted to the pop hit cycle as hip-hop heads.

this kid isn't showing ANY sign of originality or vision. It's just dumb beats and grunts.

There's a difference between this turd and a raw debut project that hints at something fresh - Section 80, Nostalgia Ultra, Thank Me Later, Slim Shady LP etc.

Those are debut albums AFTER years of hard work, professional work in fact. Kendrick/Drake spent a couple of years on the mixtape circuit before those records, Eminem had indie releases and Ocean was already in the system as dude in a major label song writing camp.

And he had a killers row of people behind the board of vets to help him craft Illmatic along with whatever other advise/guidance they could give him.

Desiigner or however you spell it probably isn't the best example to show latent talent but the idea remains how we expect our artists to come out the oven fully baked with a near classic.

knocking it out the park. Rakim was 18 or 19 when Paid in Full came out. LL Was 16/17 when Radio came out. We can't use age as an excuse for someone being terrible. Some people have it and some don't, some of those that don't can get better.

strong point. this isn't even exclusive to Desiigner but he's a glaring example of it. artists are either toiling to break out of obscurity or having to go from A-Z publicly and quickly. tough out there.

You've got your acts that actually cultivate a fanbase/body of work, blow up, and the label comes to 'sign' you as if they are doing you a favor.

On the inverse you've got a sea of artists that could have been something but the label basically put em out there on their own to figure shit out. This reminds me of the Mr.Exquire read in rollingstone a few years back.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mr-muthafuckin-exquires-music-biz-misadventures-20140620

Where obviously he didn't have as big a hit as Panda but def. had a buzz. While labels always sucked/were shady, it makes you wonder if twenty years ago there would have been at least some dudes there to help him cobble together some kind of project.

very different that could end up working amazingly or could end up stalling in a month or three. it definitely doesn't suck to me. he's taking a chance that reminds me of Cudi 7-8 years ago, Thugger 2 years ago, etc.

but if he sucks to you, I can't change that.
