"so i went & tried to listen to pm dawns catalog..."

no dice
shit's still wack
i'm surprised he passed, and wish he was still alive
however, his music was wack
from the bitten de la soul eye know flow
to the pop music sheen on the breakbeats
i didn't find a song i could connect with and enjoy
maybe that boomerang soundtrack song
but that's about it
all them fuckin' break beat records he used to house at the roosevelt
and that was the best he could come up with?
goes to show you, it ain't the records, it's the man
prolly has/had the dopest collection
but got the wackest music and beats
eh
it's all subjective

life always offers you a 2nd chance...it's called tomorrow. use it wisely

Wasn't a purposeful snub or active hate, just didn't seem like something I'd like.

Reading a few of the articles since Prince Be's passing almost all of them made reference to being ahead of their time and his sample-work being impressive. I listened to a few songs at random and didn't hear what the fuss was about to be honest. :/

I have a long road trip coming up and will give the essential albums of theirs a front to back listen.

Dude couldn't sing or rap, but the first album had beats.

And I'd rather listen to that album than, say, Kid Cudi. Or a lot of these other rapper/singers. I know that's not setting the bar very high, but that's mainstream hip-hop these days.

I don't know about the whole he can't sing thing. He killed I'd Die Without You. And the lyrics were not predictable or trite.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

You have to consider the context. I think one of the main reasons they were seen as more pop was because they were really influenced by that British/euro sound that was kind of dream pop, definitely more r+b influenced (especially on their second album). They were rooted in hip hop style, sampled beats production, but were far more interested in making pop songs out of that foundation.

Now, considering all that, it's pretty awesome how he weaved in all the obscure samples that he did.

to what I can on Spotify. And fuck it. I've been digging it.

The beats go, the lyrics are eccentric enough to challenge the listener to figure out what the hell he is saying...

not sure why the hate.... did I get back in the day... yeah, kinda... but no, where anything goes.... nope... shit is solid as anything else

I was seeing folks giving props to their catalog, so I was thinking that maybe since I'm older and a lot more open than I was as a teenager, I'd come around. Nah, I can't get with that polished sound that you talked about. Them joints still sound cheesy and soft and gives me that same feeling of 'bleh' that I got back in the day. Respects to the dead but I can't get with them joints except maybe that one joint "I'd Die Without You" (the Boomerang joint).

Def a De La type flow and sample for that matter. Clearly inspired by 3 is the Magic Number.

Def appreciated their alt vibe as well as lyrical/musical approach.
