"J Dilla "The Diary"....Discussion?"

No real discussion on this project in here? May have missed it, but damn, this joint got some heaters. Can almost rock it front to back, just feels good to hear Dilla again on an LP that is probably his best posthumous release. Lovin the vibes on this one, Egon and them did Dilla and his fam proper...Gotta love "The Creep (The O)", The Shining Pt. 1, "The Ex" and "So Far"-emotional joint....

conflicted feelings. great to see the LP finally released properly but it looks/sounds and feels tampered with. I know there was a version Dilla turned into MCA that was shelved and this record is not it. I'm sure the Egons will claim sound quality and trouble finding original files but it still doesn't answer why put Nas and others who were not part of the original process on this. no Kanye or Dilla fight club verse seem like huge blunders to me. I am still buying this but I
hope this is the end of Dilla posthumous material.

Yeah bro, I get it...that said, I think the organizers of this project had their hearts in the right place and did his legacy justice. The stuff I have read speaks to a lot of effort that was put into creating the project and comes off sincere. Here is a link...

As far as the Nas joint, it just kinda works for me. Agree though that this should probably be it for posthumous releases....

is part truth, part marketing ploy. if he would have wanted Nas, Snoop, etc. on it, he would have sessions with them. He wanted Kanye on it, yet he's not on the joint. if sound quality of files was an issue, that's weird to me because Dilla's magic was about creating a feeling that transcended the mechanics. so I have to say it feels like Egon's version of the MCA album.

21. "re Snoop & Kanye"
In response to Reply # 10

Do you mean you don't think Snoop was supposed to be on this album? Snoop was signed to MCA at the time, and the end of the Dilla's verse is "I got my nigga Kokane and Snoop and HiTek to make it gangsta for you" I know this is a newly recorded Snoop verse. Most likely new Kokane (if it's not it's solidifies that Snoop was supposed to be on it.)

As for Kanye, from what I've read, he did work with Kanye, and rapped on the (now as we know it) Takeover beat. Now that the Jay-Z track is out, there's no way now they'd (Egon/Mass Appeal) would get the publishing, etc., to re-release that beat with Dilla.

With "We F'ed Up" on it. I still think what I said makes sense. (Even though that beat was used on that 3rd Mos Def album.

As for the Snoop track, I don't remember it from my leak. I lost a huge stash of my digital files a while ago, and restoring everything from an old 80 gig iPod Classic, but it's taking a lot of time because nothing is sorted in any kind of order.
Was there a track on it that is now Gangster Boogie? I honestly don't remember.
On this track he does drop the line about Snoop/Kokane/HiTek though......

you might just care about things aside from the music a little too much

AND it was a fucking bonus track

yup, cats whining about bonus tracks because it waters down some weird idea of "purity" of the project

meanwhile Egon n them busted their asses to bring us Dilla's last statement & i, for one, am grateful

is a bit of a marketing ploy, sad to say. again, there was a finished CD he turned in that was shelved. this version is not it.

and it's more than just what parts are put together. I personally would have enjoyed the Dilla/Madlib bonus without Nas, or without Dilla and just Nas over Madlib. it's too much of a underground relevancy grab by Nasir for me.

call me whatever, I'm not trying to convince anyone to join my line of thinking.

I had a friend who's on facebook talking about the album like it was something different, and he has the first leaked version of PayJay or the MCA Album, other than the Conyay joint, it's pretty much the same except a tid bit different vibe/mixdown.

I never thought it was a great album compared to "Champion Sound", "Welcome 2 Detroit", "Ruff Draft" or even "24 Hours" (which I loved more than most people), to me J-Dilla's beats always have me hyped for more and this being his rap album with him not doing much production it struck me as okay nothing crazy but worth listening to.

Some saying it was uncomplete back then and still is, not sure about that what tracks they know is missing or did some wanted more, I thought it was cool to keeping it short not long winded but it won't get tons of repeat play like his other albums though; I'm glad it's finally out, now it got me wondering about the infamous "Pizza Man Tapes" PBW & Egon was talking about when "Donuts" dropped.

I never listened to the original version so my response is just to this official version. Not sure where I'd rank it yet overall, but I'm glad it's out as a lot of these tracks I had as loosies here and there. Kinda cool having them home on the album they were intended for from the start.

...doesn't have the 'dilla feel' to me and I understand why that might be. I think if I'd known him personally or worked with him this would've been more special. But hey...

Maybe it'll grow on me..
As someone said up top...I hope this is the last posthumous album from dilla.

I don't LOVE it, tho. Diamonds, Trucks, and The Creep (especially) are my joints. nothing else really jumps out at me off the first listen.

even tho I'm not crazy about it, I'm happy to support the fam with a purchase since I skipped out on everything after Jay $tay Paid.

also: I've mentioned this before, but I'm fairly certain that 'Baby' from The Shining is actually a Madlib production, so I wonder why it was on that project instead of this one since it was in line with the theme of the record. *shrug*

I think the Madlib tape was from 2004. The tiredness in Dilla's voice matched throughout The Shining to me. His voice was much different on this album. I also think Dave New York was in his life when he moved to LA, not while doing the Pay Jay record in Detroit.
