I don't want to hear Dr. Dre infused with trap music ever again.

i heard about 8 songs, and none of them sounded trapish to me. i'm assuming it had to be songs other than: just another day, animals, one shot one kill, loose canons, all in a day's work, genocide, and the first verse of medicine man.

Light ass claps, kicks with low end but no midrange, predictable patterns (Dre has never been great at drum programming in regards to patterns to begin with), etc.

to classic or what we would expect it to be. I was happy he still had the balls to actually put SOMETHING out. And the whole hype from the movie basically overshadowed the fact that this wasn't too good.
At the same time, it's wild as FUCK that this was his first and only #1 album, ever.

and it's a shame considering Paak and Kendrick were involved.
But them other no name dudes were no name for a reason.

Same for Kendrick, and Idk what Dre sees in Justus....he's isn't wack but he wasn't good enough to write half of a Dr Dre album.
That said I like some joints here....and I think the music is AMAZING (I wish we could get an instrumental version of Compton). You're right tho, this is a hall-of-famer with no team to win a championship with.
Honestly I think I wanted (and still do) another WEST COAST album. I don't want it to push boundaries or change the landscape of music....I just wanna hear music that makes me think I'm in LA, that sounds better than all of the other west coast beatsmiths could do....but I'm sure Dre would see that as too easy or boring, and I get that.

For lack of a better (or real) term. Dre was trying too hard to do what he did when he was in his teens, 20s and 30s. He's 50. He sounded out of place trying to rap like a hungry 19 year old.
And re: the above, in the end that's kind of what I was hoping for too. There were a few moments like that but few and far between to be sure. I just think he was better off sticking with what worked rather than trying to reinvent the wheel again at 50+

I do feel this woulda been a lot better. What's surprising is that even when a lot of L.A. cats make traditional sounding L.A. music, all it takes is a hint of modernization thrown on top of it, and it'll still sound fresh! Such as the songs Battlecat, Travis Barker, and Quik produced for Game's album..and the Problem and Quik EP, Track #2 especially.

... I think you're 100% right and I think it's because the west coast's signature hip-hop sound is just so universal and easy to groove to. It's got better melodies and isn't as harsh as other forms of hip-hop. Even the more hardcore west coast stuff over the years has had enough of a melody to be attractive to the most virgin of ears.

when ghostwriting who's flow it is. At least try to sound like a dre we know. But then again, dre surprisingly killed those flow, and if we weren't listening intently for something else, we would just dig it and judge the music on its own merits.

It was great to hear something with Dre's name attached, something he thought was good enough to release.
I'd love an instrumental LP if only because there's a lot going on musically and I'd like to be able to concentrate on just that instead of trying to figure out if it's fucking Dre rapping on the song.
Was I the only one who had a helluva time figuring out if it was DRE rapping on some songs? You can tell which verses are written by who but on some songs I'd like, "wait is that DRE? - his voice doesn't sound the same as it did on the last song."
And it happens throughout the album in my opinion. That bugged me.

And the same went for the featured guests too. Snoop didn't sound like Snoop on his first appearance. Cube didn't really sound like Cube. Game didn't sound like Game.
Not sure why they went that route. It was strange. And totally unnecessary.
