Digable Planets Plot Reunion Tour

Nineties rappers also set for festival appearances at Sasquatch, Essence, Pitchfork

BY JON BLISTEIN April 19, 2016

Nineties hip-hop outfit Digable Planets have announced a nine-date reunion tour for this summer Brooklyn Vegan reports.

The trek kicks off July 18th at the Woodward Theater in Cincinnati, Ohio, following a handful of festival dates. Digable Planets will primarily stick to cities in the southeast and Mid-Atlantic region, though they're expected to announce more concerts soon. A complete list of dates is below.

Digable Planets announced their plans for a reunion tour during a New Year's Eve concert in Seattle. Since that show, they've scheduled festival sets at Sasquatch in George, Washington, Essence in New Orleans and Pitchfork in Chicago. They're also slated to play Salt Lake City's Twilight Concert Series August 18th with Pusha T.

Formed in the late Eighties by Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Craig "Doodlebug" Irving and Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, Digable Planets scored a Top 20 hit with their 1992 single, "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and went on to release two LPs before disbanding in 1995. The group briefly reunited in 2005, but hadn't performed together since 2011 prior to their New Year's Eve show in Seattle. During that time, Butler formed Shabazz Palaces with multi-instrumentalist Tendai "Baba" Maraire.

Digable Planets Tour Dates

May 28 — George, WA @ Sasquatch Festival
July 2 — New Orleans, LA @ Essence Festival
July 16 — Chicago, IL @ Pitchfork Festival
July 18 — Cincinnati, OH @ Woodward Theater
July 19 — Asheville, NC @ Orange Peel
July 20 — Birmingham, AL @ The Saturn
July 21 — Nashville, TN @ The Exit In
July 22 — Atlanta, GA @ Masquerade
July 23 — Charleston, SC @ Music Farm
July 24 — Carrboro, NC @ Cat's Cradle
July 26 — Washington, D.C. @ 9:30 Club
July 28 — Ardmore, PA @ Ardmore Music Hall
August 18 — Salt Lake City, UT @ Pioneer Park

they are as brooklyn as primo and guru, but when you listen to gangstarr you don't think this is Prairie View or Boston hip hop, you think Brooklyn. Same for DP's regardless of where they were raised. They represented Brooklyn, not silver spring, philly, or Seattle.

its very different

1 - primo helped define brooklyn's sound in the 90s by producing brooklyn MC's (Biggie, Jeru, O.C., group home)

2- There is nothing brooklyn sounding about DP's music... they had been living in BK prolly all of 6 months when they made that borough check song

3 - Preem had always visited his family up in brooklyn...he musta caught a vibe

I didn't; I was out all day, including getting rained down on during the afternoon-evenings hours when it poured, so I wasn't in the mood to go out at all last night. Plus I wanted to make sure I had energy to watch Lawler/Wooodley scrap as well.

If you went, how was the show overall?

I missed Camp Lo because I had no idea they would actually start on time. I was walking up to Luchini. The DP band was good and the groups energy was official. I had to leave early thought because I had two more events to hit that night. Def was a good show.

you must not know much about carrboro or the cat's cradle venue. the Cat's Cradle has been a staple for live shows for as long as I can remember and is the number one place that Hip Hop artist have been coming to in the triangle area for as long as I can remember.

My first show there was the Tribe, Souls, and De La Tour in '93. I've seen them all there from KRS, Burning Spear, Pharcyde, Dead Prez, Tanya Morgan, George Clinton, Run the Jewels, Hiero, Little Brother, the Liks, Talib, Arrested Development (with Dionne Farris), Curren$y, and many others that I have forgotten about.

Great venue, cool little village which is pretty much west Chapel Hill, and a place that has a lot of sentiment with me. I first saw an unknown Phonte rip my boy to shreds in after show cipher at a Kweli or Tyfu show back in 1999 or 2001.

Chapel Hill is simply nice laid back college town that borders Durham and is close enough to Raleigh. The triangle area is one of the fastest growing areas in the country so it has what you would expect any mid-sized city to have in the south. Carrboro shouldn't even be a separate town if you ask me, but since if was a mill town the owner of the mill, Julian Carr, needed to have township as his legacy. There is no separation of people, culture or norms. It's just a college town.

I live in Carrboro and I can tell you.....Cats Cradle is the staple of the town. As far as regional venues go, Cats Cradle's list of past shows is legendary. Shit, even Nirvana played on that stage.

Not to mention, Shabazz Palaces got a lot of love out here every time they came through.

Digable Planets Extend Reunion Tour To Europe, Add Grip Of Late Fall Dates

By Zo

The Digable Planets reunion run appears to be getting deeper by the day. After extending their monumental comeback tour just last week with more than a dozen new dates, the foundational hip-hop trio is spreading the love to the other side of the pond, adding 11 European stops in November to an already sprawling itinerary. Still no word on whether all of this movement could be pointing towards a new release from the group, but at least Ladybug Mecca appears to be in the studio with the newly-forged supergroup BROOKZILL!, comprised of Prince Paul, Don Newkirk and Rodrigo Brandão. Peep the new dates for Digable Planets down below and if you happen to be in the Republic of Brooklyn this weekend, catch them lighting up the stage in Prospect Park.

I've seen lots of groups try to incorporate live bands into their sets. Very few do it successfully. Before this, I'd say it was just The Roots and The Fugees. But now I'll add Digable to that list. Great show, great energy, great atmosphere. And yes, the live band added a lot to the tracks. They went on for a good hour and 15 minutes, performing their well-known stuff and some of the deeper album tracks.

Oh, and Camp Lo was dope too.

Watched them once before with a full band, and it was enjoyable as hell. I gotta say it again, Ish is really on point live too. Breath control, clarity of rhymes, energy. Dude is on it.

I saw them with a live band during their **last** reunion tour about 8 years ago, and they were cool. This time around they're even better.

I had the same thought regarding the live band. That band was on point and they didn't overpower Digable. Greeat show!! Packed house too.

I thought Camp Lo was ok but Geechi seemed way more into it than Sonny. I know Sonny's flow was always the more laidback of the two but it seemed more pronounced than that. That was my only time seeing em though

they showed with their place and the love they were getting. The crowd was into it all the way, and the DPs varied the set up enough to keep everyone on their toes. Some of the band jams went on a bit long for me, but they always brought it back pretty smoothly. Mecca still fly, Doodle still the dude you root for to win because he seems so genuine, and Ish is just that dude. Music still sounds fresh as hell too, it has aged very well. Give Butterfly credit for that on the production tip. Dude didn't set a foot wrong on those 2 albums.
