"Robert Glasper tackling Miles this year"

New album Everything is Beautiful reimagining Miles's work:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/motormouthshaz/25276608699/in/photostream/

EVERYTHING'S BEAUTIFUL, reimagined interpretations of Miles Davis' music produced by Grammy Award winner Robert Glasper (who also served as co-producer of the MILES AHEAD soundtrack) with musical guest artists including Bilal, Illa J, Erykah Badu, Phonte, Hiatus Kaiyote, Laura Mvula, KING, Georgia Ann Muldrow, John Scofield and Ledisi, and Stevie Wonder. A visionary exploration of the music of Miles Davis, EVERYTHING'S BEAUTIFUL incorporates Davis' original recordings into new collaborative soundscapes.

The Miles Davis track featuring Bilal “Ghetto Walkin”, from the upcoming release EVERYTHING'S BEAUTIFUL, premieres today for the first time during Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show on Apple Music. EVERYTHING'S BEAUTIFUL is also available now for digital pre-orders via iTunes - http://smarturl.it/Davis_Glasper_iTunes.

***

EVERYTHING'S BEAUTIFUL

1. "Talking Shit"
2. "Ghetto Walkin" featuring Bilal
3. "They Can't Hold Me Down" featuring Illa J
4. "Maiysha (So Long)" featuring Erykah Badu
5. "Violets" featuring Phonte
6. "Little Church" featuring Hiatus Kaiyote
7. "Silence Is The Way" featuring Laura Mvula
8. "Song For Selim" featuring KING
9. "Milestones" featuring Georgia Ann Muldrow
10. "I'm Leaving You" featuring John Scofield and Ledisi
11. "Right On Brotha" featuring Stevie Wonder

As noted he's also co-producing the Miles Ahead soundtrack.

High hopes for this, though I must say even as a fan of pretty much everyone on that tracklist, I wish it weren't so vocal heavy. IMO Glasper's instrumental work has always been better than his work with vocalists.

then was somewhat disappointed to see that it is again a vocal heavy work, I will still check it out as I really dig Glasper's playing, but although I was introduced to him through Black Radio, after going through some of his catalogue the Black Radio stuff is definitely worse than his instrumental focused records (Double Booked is great)....that and the last Black Radio album really wasn't that good. I just feel like the constant use of vocalists and less emphasis on improvisation kind of puts him in a much less interesting box.

I realize that being a jazz popular artist, unless you have extremely strong, recognized hip hop ties (Kamasi Washington - love his album madly, but he only got mad press because of Kendrick Lamar/Flying Lotus) the only way to generate strong interest in your work seems to be with vocalists (Snarky Puppy's Family Dinner series). That said, I'm a huge Miles fan, so will most definitely be checking it out

I've been a fan since In My Element. He came out with 3 great jazz trio records, then dropped Double-Booked which is IMO his masterpiece. All four albums have some really great writing with original tunes. (Some covers here and there, but mostly originals by far.)

But Double-Booked was the last album with mostly originals. The 2 Black Radio albums were covers, plus the remix album, then he came out with a good trio album last year but it was also all covers. Now he's doing Miles arrangements...I really just want either a trio or Experiment album with originals...I'm still a huge fan though and will be copping this.

the original jazz stuff doesn't (I believe).

He actually addressed this in an article not to long ago.
He knows people want him to do a traditional jazz album.

And it was still all covers. It was even called "Covered". It was with his original trio, had his original traditional jazz sound so it wasn't made to pander to sales, but he played covers instead of his original writing.

I'll obviously reserve full judgment until I hear the record, but similar to Kosa12, my excitement diminished after seeing the tracklist, and now has diminished further after hearing some of the snippets.

Haven't given it a solid listen yet and don't think I am going to rave about it by any means, but I'll at least say it has a few cuts like that Badu track. (A good portion of it on the other hand sounded pretty boring...)

But the Miles Davis name affixed boldly on the front as though this were a collaboration? Come on now...

In many ways it wasn't what I expected but after one listen so far, I like it. Probably the most surprising thing is that Glasper's relinquished a lot of control in the production and there even appear to be songs (like the King and Kaiyote ones) where I'm not even sure he appears on - he isn't credited for those songs strangely.
