"Post your favorite track from: Public Enemy"

Revolutionary Generation

I was obsessed with Public Enemy for a few years around middle/high school, especially Fear of a Black Planet. I new every line on that album. But what really launched me was the b/w side of 911 is joke cassette single which had Revolutionary Generation. I remember listening to that tape on a 10 hour car trip around thanksgiving and listening to it over and over... and honestly at the time, I don't think I knew what half the shit Chuck was spittin about, I just memorized it anyway. Still a great song...

werd.

I will never forget the day during my freshman year of college when I was chilling in my room, heard the OG Shut Em Down and was like, dope, someone is bumping PE really loud, then looked outside and saw Flava Flav and Chuck D on top of some type of tour truck/bus.....performing the song..followed the bus to the hall where concerts are held at my school...turns out they had a show there....it wasn't sold out...bought tickets...and had a blast lol

Easily one of the greatest runs ever seen by a "group". All that to say... I can't pick one song as my favorite. My top song changed with every response that I read here. LOL

Crazy sidenote:
In my senior year of high school ('88-'89), I took an art appreciation course. During that course, we had to submit a stained glass project. My project was PE's logo - the black man standing in the crosshairs.

Second sidenote:
PE was much more influential than damned NWA. I've not seen 'Straight outta Compton' due to lack of interest. I'd have been there the first night if PE was the subject.

in East Coast, NYC specifically, superiority at that time. Now, that I think about it, it could be because the West Coast had yet to break the stranglehold that the East Coast had on hip hop at the time. It came a few years later but, at that time, it was all about NYC to me. And again, I'm from Louisiana. I opted out of a service tour to Italy to go to NJ so I could be closer to NYC and visiting where hip hop was birthed.

All that aside, I liked NWA but didn't find them as influential as PE. I learned and became curious to learn even more by listening to PE.

NWA didn't strike me that same way. Sure! I listened to NWA and screamed "Fuck the police" but PE changed my life.

As for who's carrying PE's torch today, I'd oddly offer Kendrick Lamar as a torchbearer. His discography has, IMO, songs that are equally as musically layered as some of the best PE/Bomb Squad work while at the same time being a descendant of the NWA family tree. Other than that, I can't think of anyone.

Been thinking about this too. I agree with Creole re: Kendrick. I feel like Dead Prez had that revolutionary shit going, but they have been quiet. Nobody really has taken the same space the PE had. That said, they keep making music, maybe we just don't listen anymore.

'92. The last new music of theirs that I heard was the stuff they did for "He Got Game". Otherwise, I like to remember them as they were during the run from '86/'87 through '92. Also sad is that I'm like that with many of the rap artists, of that era, that I was really fond of. For instance, BDK ain't registered on my radar since '92. And one example from the next generation is Nas. As great as Nas is to me, I haven't been interested in any of his work post-2006.

Sad but true. The last PE album I checked for was the He Got Game soundtrack.

What we hear marketed to our communities is very much by design.

I agree that PE was way more influential for me personally than NWA but I do think NWA had a wider and more lasting impact on rap/hip-hop as a whole.

Aside from a handful of artists, it's hard to hear PE's influence in much of today's music.

But you can see NWA's DNA all over hip-hop from the rise of non-NYC hip-hop to the subject matter.

PE is my favorite group of all time and It Takes a Nation is my favorite album of all time. Black Steel is my favorite song, but like others have said, it's so hard to pick just one.

Bring the Noise

Hearing that song for the first on the Less Than Zero Soundtrack was like a punch to the face.

From the "Too Black, too strong" intro to the "Bass" that kicks off Chuck's rhyming.

That moment alone keeps this song as my favorite.

As for a song, gun to my head I'd probably go with the Shut 'Em Down remix or Welcome To The Terrordome
