"Greatest Newark NJ hip hop?"

So I'm from the bricks and I'm trying to really get into the history of hip hop music of my city.

All I know of is Redman (I have Whutt? And Dare is... and I have some recent stuff but I haven't felt like checking it)

I have LOTUG's first 2 albums

Artifacts' first album (gonna get the 2nd tomorrow)

Queen Latifa's "All Hail the Queen" and "Black Reign"

The Fugees both albums

Who out of these artists would you say is the "greatest" act from Newark? Are there others I should check for?

I'll throw in these two, as well, to see who say's is the best from the whole state.. I'm sure everyone says Naughty is the best

I have Naughty's first 3 albums (although they're from East Orange)

and Poor Righteous Teachers' "New World Order" (although they're from Trenton)

Brick City is all Redman, Artifacts & Outsidaz.

I have a personal friend named Gunz from the bricks who was briefly signed to Mya back when being signed to Mya meant slightly something. He locked up now.

Outsidaz kinda sum up Newarl hip hop perfectly. Rah Digga has a bigger dick than most. And she has a vag.

My man Gunz was special, though. He dog jacked a messican outchea. Smashed a 40 over the messican head and took his pitbull.

Baltimore Club.

Rap wise? Ehh..I feel like maybe someone from NJ can tell it better than me. It might be like how Long Beach rap was compared to L.A./South Central Rap...small differences in slang, but more so different artists/camps who came with their own sound that was a slight variation of what was already going on, but not a major difference.

Fetty's from Paterson anyway.

I don't know if I'd say NJ has it's own sound. The state will always be in the shadows of NY and PA. Now that I think about it, the golden age NJ rap--Naughty, Fugees, Lah, Outsidaz, Artifacts, etc.--did have a slightly different sound from their peers across the river. It was...grimier, maybe? Distinctively East Coast but...harder sounding and less jazzy than what NY cats were producing during that time.

You should compile a list of NJ funk and soul acts...from Whitney, Kool & The Gang, Faith Evans, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Roberson, Jaheim, Leroy Hutson and so many more, NJ has no shortage of R&B talent that hit it big.

Can't forget about Joe Budden.

PMD kicked off that emo-rap shit, decades before Drake. And Joe furthered in (albeit in a more traditional hardcore rap style) the '00s.
