For this week's episode of my mixshow podcast The Corner Radio I'm chopping it up with my R&B squad Kaye and JR about our top 5 slept on R&B albums from the 90's. Bet money this ep will not only bring back memories but school you to a lot of music that might have gone under your radar. And in case cats don't have time to peep the whole show and wanna get straight to the convo, skip to the 24:03 mark and you're good money.
Tracklisting: Poison - BBD You Know What's Up - Donnell Jones w/Left Eyes Don't Walk Away - Jade Back To Life - Soul 2 Soul Hey Mr. DJ - Zhane Get It On Tonight - Montell Jordan Hold On - En Vogue Real Love - Mary J. Blige If You Want Me - Brownstone Candy Rain - Soul 4 Real Right Here - SWV Back and Forth - Aaliyah Tell Me - Groove Theory
So my question for the boards this week is what are your 5 slept on R&B albums from the 90's and why?
My top 5 are: Myron's Destiny album. Dude came out back in 97 when D' was MIA and tried to hop on the neo soul bandwagon. Had a jawn "We Can Get Down" with Spinderella that was REAL dope but the whole album is solid.
N'Dea Davenpot's self titled album. Shorty had a REAL dope album with soul, funk, blues, a lil New Orleans 2nd line...a REAL solid album.
Alfonso Hunter's Blacka Da Berry. Dude was the 1st singer signed to E. Sermon's Def Squad crew and his album was DOPE! E. Sermon had dude singin over the Smilin Billy Suite sample made famous by Tip for Nas' One Love for a slow song & the jawn was BONKERS!
Chico DeBarge's Long Time No See. Yeah, another dude biting D's style but damn it if you're gonna bite another man's style...do it right and I can't front, Chico's album was REAL DOPE! From Iggin' Me, Virgin & No Guarntee with Joe to he's take on Marvin's Trouble Man, Love Still Good & Superman it's real hard to front on this album.
Playa's Cheers To You. Never heard it? PLEASE go buy it not now but right now. An entire album produced by Timbaland and Statik on the writing tip? No way you're going wrong with that!

Listen to my heartbeeeeat...YA EX CAN'T TOP THAAAAT!
Hell yeah.
>2. Adriana Evans - Adriana Evans
>1. Frankie - My Heart Belongs to You
If I had you IS THE JAM. I put folks onto that thang all the time.
The 90s had a gang of solid albums. But at some point folks decided that albums that didn't change folks' lives were somehow not good enough to listen to.

Word. And then artists reacted by trying to just get one song by the masses and saying 'eff it' on the albums since it is almost never enough (see how folks treat Lupe's thang and Kendrick's last two). The format is obviously still a great thing in the right hands, but lawd...you ain't lyin...mic ratings and everyone with a keyboard thinking they could and should 'review' things with negative slants after less than at least 5 full listens and some time to break things down helped mess it all up.
I wore Destiny OUT. I had the single then jumped into the album. I found his second album years later and rolled with that too. Free. 2005. I must've been the only one on that one tho.

Destiny was him playing more like a 90s R&B lover man. That title track is still crazy tho.
Free and The Works are stripped down by comparison. I had to go ahead and revisit them earlier today. I like where 'his heart' seems to be on all of his albums tho. His voice works even if the music and the concepts could be called 'simple' as an insult. But hell...sometimes it feels good to hear a dude singing to try to help folks through something with little to nothing else mixed in. The 'messages' hit so much more cleanly that way.

That Hard To Say I'm Sorry cover was BONKERS! One of the FEW remakes that comes crazy close to the original. Never checked the whole album out but I'm gonna have to do the knowledge on that jawn now.
Produced by Vincent Herbert, big time '90s R&B producer who later became the mastermind behind Lady Gaga and the Braxtons (he's married to Tamar, of course).
23. "Not understanding the hype over this Myron cat" In response to Reply # 0 Sun Nov-29-15 09:13 AM by ramaj1
I remember Myron via the CD single for Dru Hill's "Tell Me" way back in '96. There was an "Island Records Black Music" sampler that played a few songs by other "upcoming" artists after the vocal and instrumental versions of "Tell Me". Myron's "Destiny" was one of those songs.
Upon listening to samples of Destiny on Island, I don't understand the hype and can see why he faded into obscurity. He can sing but not remarkably so. The grooves seem quite typical of late '90s R&B. I'm also not feeling how obvious of a bite "We Can Get Down" is of D's "Lady".
I had no clue that he's released product as recently as 2008 though. If Meshell and Rob Glasper are down, so am I...*puts Myron & the Works on queue*
