"what do you think held Seal Back?"

he got a good voice and i always said with the right material he could have a lennox Lewis run instead of doing a Frank Bruno.

and I wonder why he ain't as big as John Legend and Alicia Keys since he does Sleppy time music.

i'd love to hear Seal get all DMX on a track and bark.

Brother man don't bark on his records and does alot of Meow!!!!!!!!!!!!

But my sense was that he wasn't perceived as being 'black' enough for his time.

Maybe he was hurt some by being from the UK which hasn't broken a black R&B singer into America in sometime.

Since audiences are more welcoming of different forms of Blackness in this time period, he might have a better run if he started his career now, rather than 20 years ago.

But it's not because of talent. Like you said, he's got a great voice and his songs seem solid. But I think his lack of success has more to do with Black audiences not embracing his music, and without that audience, it's hard for a Black artist to really become a star.

Yes, his music wasn't straight up R&B like Luther or Babyface.

But because he is Black, didn't make club or party music, and didn't have an inroads into the R&B community, he didn't have the base that alot of the R&B acts that have had a lot of success did have.

His music was nice enough and Maxxx is making the claim that he could have had more success given his image, since he is talented. I would agree that he's talented, but popular music has always been as much about image as it has talent and Seal's image just didn't connect like I think Maxxx is saying it ought to have.

Like alot of the posters in here mentioned, he's had a good run tho.

And "Kiss From a Rose" is a great, great song IMO...but listening to it recently, I truly felt stumped as to how the hell it became a smash hit at the time...it fits no format, and is one of the more unconventionally structured songs I've ever heard on the radio.

Not too up on his career outside of that song, but if that's any indication of his catalog or approach, it's not difficult to understand why he didn't catch on in a bigger way. Any Seal experts, feel free to school me accordingly if I've got it all wrong.

Whats even better is its another hit song about coke...

But if I remember my youth working at Great Adventure that song was blasted through the whole park every 30 min. My assumption is it just smashed cuz of the movie it was attached to.

Is it???!

Not gonna lie, reading your reply inspired me to actually look up the lyrics for the first time ever. It was always one of those songs I just kinda sang phonetically (sort of a rarity for me, but I suppose this is how a good percentage of the public treats most songs, right?).

I can definitely see that, though...but has he ever explicitly acknowledged as much?

I don't think he cared to bang out artistically like that. He has his 3 jams and milked that heavy. I'm sure he's flush with white pussy post Heidi. Even his 3rd jam I find myself singing along to when I hear it.

In his prime. Black people in America may have been mostly oblivious to him, but that doesn't mean anything when everybody else is supporting you.

Kiss from a Rose is an obvious choice, and probably a top 10 song from the 90s honestly
but he had alot of other songs that were staples during my time growing up:

don't cry
crazy
fly like an eagle

where all pretty bigs hits where i lived
seal is one of those dudes where you don't realize his impact/reach in retrospect into you slide in that greatest hits CD and get taken back down memory lane

He did fall off commercially in the states after "Kiss From a Rose" but I think he rebounded here with his "Soul" albums.

His Human Being album is very underrated...very nice release.
