"So Adele sold 900k in one day (link)"

900k at iTunes alone. Is her shit really that great? Who here is a fan?

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6770264/adele-25-nsync-no-strings-attached-nielsen-soundscan-billboard-charts

After one day on sale, Adele's 25 appears set to break *NSYNC's long-standing one-week Nielsen-era U.S. album sales record of 2.42 million sold, according to industry forecasters. Sources say the set is on track to sell at least 2.5 million in pure album sales in its first week, and sold more than 900,000 copies alone through the iTunes Store on its first day of release.

25 was released on Nov. 20 through XL/Columbia Records. It's Adele's third studio album.

*NSYNC currently owns the single largest sales week for an album since Nielsen Music began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. (Prior to 1991, there was no authoritative music sales tracking service in the U.S. and thus, it was mostly unknown how many copies of an album or song/single were sold in a single week.)

*NSYNC's No Strings Attached debuted with 2,416,000 sold in the week ending March 26, 2000. No Strings Attached has since remained the only album to sell 2 million copies in the U.S. in a single week.

Nielsen Music's tracking week runs Friday through Thursday each week, so 25's first week will conclude on Nov. 26. Billboard is scheduled to report 25's debut week sales on Nov. 29, once Nielsen has finished processing its weekly data.

Before 25's release, it was reported that the album shipped 3.6 million physical copies to retailers. In addition, sources were forecasting 25's CD configuration to sell 1.5 million in its first week, while its digital edition could move another 1 million (meaning, its first week might be at least 2.5 million in total).

Now perhaps the question is: How much bigger can 25 get? Will it blow past the 2.5 million threshold? Can it hit 3 million? And what will 25 sell in its second and third week? Could it become the first album to sell a million copies in more than one week?

If 25 sells as expected, it will become the 20th album to sell at least a million copies in a single week in the Nielsen era. It would also instantly be the largest selling album of 2015 in total, surpassing the sales of Taylor Swift's 1989, which has sold 1.74 million this year (through Nov. 12).

25 is also on course to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Dec. 12), which would give the diva her second No. 1. She first led the list with her last album, 21, which spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the list -- most weeks at No. 1 for an album by a woman. 21 has sold 11.23 million copies in the U.S., and is the tenth-largest selling album of the Nielsen era.

I can guess, and probably be right lol, but the actual facts would be cool to have

I wonder how many units 19 has moved since she's become more popular? I don't think people seriously started paying attention until 21

now I'll exit before I start the comparison game too

I didn't spend as much time with 21 as it seems most others did because I thought 19 was so much better... 21 was kind of a let down for me... Gonna give 25 a chance this week...

The conversation with crash flowed just fine lol dude said he didn't like 21, I said "He won't go" is cool but the songs from 19 are better.

dude said all those songs were on 19, including "he won't go", if he knew that then he should have been the one to clarify he knew what album "he won't go" is on, which is what i did by providing the link.

yall can't see continuity through a simple error in grammar but I'm wrong for providing the link that cleared up the confusion from jump? lmao

But I admittedly don't know much of Adele so maybe someone who has memorized her discography would've followed your conversation better.

Your reply came off as sticking up for 21 based on the subject line and the message basically came off as you saying that your favorite was He Won't Go but that you thought the other songs were good as well.

You never mentioned 19 which is why it read like you were applying all of those songs to 21.

No big deal.

You have multiple people telling you that the way you communicated your point was off.

And then we gave you the benefit of the doubt and said "it's all good...miscommunication" and then you continue to act like a jack ass while telling people they're the ones carrying on.

Ok buddy...

For me, I'm just too much of a Soulhead musically...so even though her vocals are very soulful, and she's an amazing pure singer, the arrangements on her songs just never move me. The buildups, break downs, choruses are all on point. It's just never chordy enough for me...doesn't hit my Jazz/Gospel/Soul senses up enough for me to be a legit fan.

Means nothing though, since 2.5-3 Million people feel different!

Why today's audience is so fickle is still not known but the problem is that 90% of the people who not feeling it at all was never buying albums (physical or digitally) the week it comes out (or the month, usually a month to a year later).

I'm not saying that better music never gets it's shine in sales but the fact that it's still a mystery how certain albums are more popular whether it be good or bad, it's how eager people are willing to buy it and also the right time (holidays) is a perfect time to put out an album too.

I'm surprised Adele didn't release her album a month before Grammy's but knowing her label they're going to release three more songs from the album that's going to be #1 between now & November 2016.

Songs like Best For Last, Cold Shoulder, Right As Rain...
I like that kind of more upbeat production for Adele. She does the slow drag songs very well, but they don't all have to be that.
I'm sure someone else can describe the production, tempo, and feel of her early work better than I just did. Who's up for it?

"trying to sound Black" criticism that Amy Winehouse & Joss Stone used to get, maybe she's trying to avoid it.

I definitely think she could rock more soulful production, but maybe she has a style she can't get away from, Andrea Bocelli didn't get too soulful singing at the Stevie Wonder tribute a while back, it was just Bocellie singing a Stevie song opera style lol

There was a good analysis of this on Nytimes Popcast..

19 = Winehouse light including Mark Ronson
21 = Soul DIva a la Aretha Franklin..
25 = Celine Dion, Annie Lennox pop diva ballader steez w/ some 70s singer/songwriter in there

Haven't heard 25 yet lol but I'm not up on Celine or Annie so I would miss that similarity, just know their singles

Aretha on 21 though? Aside from the singles I thought the second half had her umm. . . Whitest music to date.

I can see Amy on 19 vocally/lyrically but production wise I think Frank and definitely Back to Black crush Adele in the soul/r&b game, not even Ronson light but i'd say "love is a losing game" and "first love" mirror each other. But I don't think 19 had a "rehab" or even a "tears dry on their own"

Well it was for sure HER interpretation of the music in all of them...

And because she ISNT these artists it may come off as super white but in her head she could be doing something she thinks is 100% "X Artist"

Shit happens to me all the time.. I might be mimicking something but because the scenario, artist whatever cannot be recreated then it sounds nothing like it even if in my head it is..

Even that I didn't LOVE, but at that time I was listening to a lot of female vocalist joints (Adele, Feist, Amy Winehouse, Beth Orton).

As others have noted, she doesn't really do it for me as I need either some soul OR a experimental/genre blending rock edge to my singing ladies (see: Hiatus Kaiyote, Melody's Echo Chamber). Adele is too straight-forward clean pop and ballads for me.

I agree that her fan base is the large majority for the reason of the sales but you don't think most artists would sell more if fans couldn't stream?

I feel like there are those that will never pay and illegal download.

Those that pay for access like streaming services and legal downloads.

And then those that pay regardless and would prefer to buy the tangible item.

No streaming at least pushes all of those that stream to legal downloads I would imagine.

You'd be surprised how many people just don't buy physical product. I'm sure some would go out and buy but just as many would be like fuck it and rock with whatever is on their streaming service. Taylor did the same thing and only sold 1.2 mil. Why is Adele doubling those numbers?

A LOT of people buy Itunes though. This is not streaming vs physical. This is purchases vs streaming. Most of the purchases currently are Itunes.

Got it but why is Adele this popular? What is it about her that has her doing double what Taylor did?

Doubling? Dude she broke the Nsync record in 3 days...

Adele is a tsunami of a lot of things... Looks wise she embodies average with an extraordinary talent. Musically what works is that her music while 1st person has a universal quality to it...

It is ageless, gender-less and any person who listens can just apply themselves (and situation) to it. It's also safe as a gift...

My dad, mom, gf, brother and 6 yr old niece can listen to it..

That is a large ass demographic

Edit: No one actually knows though..

Sidenote: "All I Ask" is such a monster of a record.. Adele & Bruno smashed that

In response to Reply # 61

Taylor might be huge, and I never heard a full album, but her singles just sound like whats hot, not like she's maturing with her audience and showing growth. All her songs sound like a victim complex soundtrack lmao, but thats just off singles, maybe she has some deep shit on her albums.

I don't see that with Adele, same argument could be made, but Adele isn't petty or vengeful in her music, it's always a theme of "well we both messed up and I'm sorry, hope you doing alright", Taylor plays to that "you always right, they're always wrong" crowd and grown folks know better.

plus like dude said above, Adele is way more universal than Swift

65. "She's packaging the pain..."
In response to Reply # 0

And it is a pain that a gang of folks know. It's kinda like Mary's My Life situation but more accessible with less Alanis to it. There's always someone who takes that lane and wins on it if they 'have it right'. Now that people see her as that, how could it not work?

Play Rolling in the Deep anywhere and mad 'still-mad at a dude' chicks are being spoken for, with, and to. You see it. Eyes are closed over the songs she has. And she's laying it out there at least enough for it to 'connect'. Add in the context of her told story and she's in there...

I agree with Max tho...if she ever 'messes up and gets too happy' ala Mary, it is awl ova wit. And she won't have the hiphop soul queen thing to fall back on like Mary.

I haven't heard any of her albums in all, but I've heard several songs and get the gist of what she's doing. I don't have hatred of any kind. I like it well enough but decided to 'get in on it' after the fact at some point when I felt like it. Old rusty dudes be asking me about it so maybe I'm missing out.

To me thats why shes in a class of her own right now. shes the only successful mainstream artist that is selling music without some combination of sex/hip/trendy/cool/absurdity/danger/tabloid antics/etc

i'm not sure how it would sound, but i think there would be a way for her to make 'happier' music and still be great

two things I'll throw in:
- 21 got the long, slow burn treatment --- it had hits right away, but they kept getting play and other tracks kept showing up on the radio long after the initial release. I think it not only kept her in the spotlight but made her seem somehow less disposable than other popular stuff that came and went.
- I wholly concur with the idea that she comes off as far more mature, more adult than Taylor Swift and that really serves her well in terms of her base. Swift comes off as pure celebrity in both the tabloids and often in her music (which isn't to say it isn't any good). Adele felt more genuine from the start, and her talking about this as a more mature/adult album, at least lyrically, fits that narrative. In other words, it would be hard to grow older with Taylor swift in your ears and feel much sense of change or progress. Adele's voice and even songwriting (I would argue) generally feel warmer, less poppish, and thus more relatable.

Let's not overlook some super smart marketing, too, in the lead-up to the release, and the fact that (I think) she's more "global" than a lot of other acts right now. None of these things alone explain her epic numbers, but roll them together and you have a formula for success among many who otherwise don't pay a lot of attention to the radio or music because they don't find anything that feels like it is for them.

Who says people don't buy music anymore?

Perhaps, Adele has an edge on a peer like Taylor Swift in that she's got both the YOUTH (the Top 40-TMZ-US Weekly-social media crowd loves her) AND MATURE markets are into her.

I have no interest in listening to '25' myself as I am not drawn to dramatic pop ballads BUT hey, you have to give props where they are due.
