"New De La Soul Album, April 29, 2016."

For those that care, just received the following email from the fellas.

As our September delivery date has long come and gone, we'd like to address the delay, the plan moving forward and the expected release date of our album.

Releasing a record independently has been a real undertaking. In addition to artistic satisfaction, the administrative and executive end had to feel right as well. Side artist clearances and appropriating the best distribution for this project has been just as important. With negotiations complete, we are now working on the plan for our awaited release. Thank you all for your patience.

In late December we'll hit you with a treat and release a song entitled "Train Wreck" followed by our first single "Pain" feat. Snoop Dogg, slated for February/March. Album release date is April 29th.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on our progress.

Thanks folks.

Anonymously,

Us.

How is it okay that the first update folks get on their well spent money is two months after the expected release date. Would it have been too much to have gotten an update in September?

I don't know bout y'all, but, when I pay for something and am given an expected date of delivery or completion, if there needs to be an extension, it should happen before the previously given date.

We all should know that, when you pay someone in full for their services before they complete the job, they no longer have something to work towards, especially if the money has already been spent.

Watch these fools rush in to defend this nonsense...

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

But anyway - I hear you. I don't think it is a huge deal as its pretty much expected. Didn't think it would be pushed back SEVEN FUCKING MONTHS but at least they're being conservative now after the initial failure.

But yea. When I first saw the September release date I was like "no fucking chance" which is generally my reaction to any initial release date so I wasn't shocked when that date came and went and will be happy to get a new De La album whenever it arrives.

That said I only spent like $50 on their crowd fund so it's not like I broke the bank. If you spent more, or spent the same but just need that money more, I feel you.

My argument is not about the money spent but about the principle.

If someone NEEDS their cash, then spending it on a crowdfunded album is one of the worst ways they could waste it. And, need is relative.

A billionaire could in most instances "afford" to spend a million on something, but, whether that money could have been better spent on something more beneficial than a De La album that gets pushed back several months could dictate his "need" our desire for said money to be returned and redirected into something with a more timely return on investment.

Only folks with new money or no money act like any amount of money wasted is "nothing" or not a big deal.

And that's not to say folks aren't free to do with their cheese add they choose.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I assure you I meant no diss or snark. Literally not a single word was meant as a shot. Tone is often tough to glean in written form, so I apologize if I came off that way.

>My argument is not about the money spent but about the
>principle.

OK - fine. And I didn't assume the amount mattered. What I was trying to convey, again probably poorly, but again with no intended snark or sarcasm, was just that so long as I eventually got an album from them, that I didn't mind if they pushed it back so long as the end product was done right.

>If someone NEEDS their cash, then spending it on a crowdfunded
>album is one of the worst ways they could waste it. And, need
>is relative.

Got it.

>A billionaire could in most instances "afford" to spend a
>million on something, but, whether that money could have been
>better spent on something more beneficial than a De La album
>that gets pushed back several months could dictate his "need"
>our desire for said money to be returned and redirected into
>something with a more timely return on investment.
>
>Only folks with new money or no money act like any amount of
>money wasted is "nothing" or not a big deal.
>
>And that's not to say folks aren't free to do with their
>cheese add they choose.

Yea we're in agreement.

And for the record - my correction of your initial "well spent money" was a joke and only a joke, hence the "haha" at the end.

Again, not a single portion of my post was intended to be snarky or sarcastic. Sorry if I worded it poorly.

They give weekly updates on the progress of the album and behind the scenes stuff. I just posted this one because they finally announced a release date.

Exactly. They previously updated on the change in release schedule. This isn't surprise news. If they get it properly dialed in and sounding dope, the wait will be worth it.

>Side artist clearances for this
>project has been just as important.
>release a song entitled "Train Wreck" followed by our
>first single "Pain" feat. Snoop Dogg,

To tell you the truth, they could've done this album in their own studios (I know damn well Maseo and Pos has a studio to record in, and they could've gotten Prince Paul as well).

Then they talking about clearing for guest artists, c'mon if they wanted to be independent so bad they could've done this album without any guest artists, a true De La Soul album not De La Soul and friends...again album; it would've saved them a whole lot of time and if they wanted to work with Snoop and others De La could've ask them to be on their albums instead since everyone else seem to still be on majors or indie distributed by a major; I'm gonna call this bullshit and laziness when they still trying to deliver a "Tommy Boy album" without "Tommy Boy money".

I'm glad I didn't participate in their funding, I'll just buy the album whenever it drops...if it's worth copping.

And I don't know why they keep delaying and pushing it back.

I hope they prove me wrong, but I expect an AOI Bionix level from this, not a 3 Feet High or De La Soul or Buhloone Mindstate album.

I will say that Plug 1 & Plug 2 Present... First Serve was really good, but while I love and support these guys I just don't know how they'll deliver a slamming album.

I thought the same for Devo - but they proved me wrong when they released a GOOD album (Something for Everybody) after 20 years of mediocre output.

But rap music is not fine wine - release it already!

Bionix is fine but with all this fanfare and money raised, I'd really hope they step it up a few notches from Bionix. The production on both AOI albums was just fine, but that's all. Not a lot stood out. Trying People and a few other exceptions but nothing on the level of Breakadawn or Stakes is High memorable.

The few clips of folks at the listening party that claimed it isn't what they expected makes me wonder if this won't be a more mainstream attempt.

>I'm confused.

I think De La has 3 classic albums, many people think they have 4.

But if people are paying money in advance, and the release date keeps getting pushed back then it BETTER BE as good as the best that De La have ever made.

The AOIs and Grind Data albums had some good parts, but mostly were forgettable to me.

I want them to prove me wrong, but they could make a decent album much more quickly than than there making this one. I've been wrong in the past but I'm think this will be mediocre PLUS people paid up from AND it wasn't cheap to buy in.

well, that's expectations that are bound to be disappointed because who of your fav artists is pulling that off if your favs are over 20 years old?
but i hear you on the pushing back aspect.

$15 was the minimum to receive the early digital download plus bonus track which is fair in my book.

Because we treat the OGs like shit. The only genre that tries to push the older artists out after their mid 30's. Making an album takes time and money. I wouldn't waste my time knowing people won't support. Touring off their classics was the smart thing to do.

They obviously tried to make music and had several aborted release strategies over the years. Remember that snippet "Life is Great"? Or the one with Supa Dave West in the Stewdio? Or the Preemium Soul on the Rocks Ep over Pete and Preemo beats? I can understand the post above yours being skeptical about what they will be dropping. It has been hella long and even the Wu shoutout and Nas tracks were good but not great.

Hopefully this new idea they had about sampling themselves sparks something in the group that creates something memorable.

But I don't see how De La has been treated like shit? In fact, the result of their Kickstarter shows they were not a group who had been cast aside. Bottomline is if you make great music, your fans will support it. Doesn't really matter the age. Most old artists make new music that's ok, but it's almost never on that level. But we check for them anyway.

Just think it's too easy to give older artists an OUT by saying nobody gives a shit vs. people don't care too much about mediocre releases even from their favorite artists.

They'll bring something interesting, but basically post-Stakes is High their music has been more respectable than phenomenal.

I'm being sarcastic but in all seriousness - I think he was more talking about the industry pushing older rap artists out than the fans. Though the fans have been guilty of that at times, too. But in that context you're right, I don't think De La has been subjected to that treatment from fans. But they definitely were by their old label/the industry.

I think De La has been subjected to that treatment from fans. Sure they'll go to the concerts and watch De La perform their older material but how many fans are buying De La albums? How many units were the AOI joints selling? How well did The Grind Date perform? No need in making new music when people don't buy it. Just cash in on the material fans care to hear which for De La is their 89-96 material. How many of us here contributed to their kickstarter and how many of us will buy when it's released?

I have no idea what the AOI albums sold....but I can say that they were released around the time that Napster started and so albums in general (outside of the Eminems of the world, for example) weren't selling quite as much as they used to in general. So I don't really think that's a product of fans not wanting to hear De La or support them so much as it was a symptom of a changing industry. And The Grind Date *definitely* suffered from that issue being released in 2004.

But I think what the OP was talking about was fans just no longer being *interested* in older artists which is definitely not the case with De La. That Kickstarter got booked up fast. I supported it, I know a ton of us around here did too. So I am not really sure why you even brought that up? Didn't they cruise right past their desired goal pretty quickly?

And would've bought the album regardless, just like I have with all their others. And obviously there are many like me. But again, the quality of the music has to be there. Shopping Bags was fine, but not good enough to make people flock to the buy the album. Grind Date is full of good tracks, not a lot of great in there, let's be honest. My point is De La has the support. This was a clever way to trade-in on that goodwill and get a chunk of $ up front. Now it's almost time to deliver. I don't like that they couldn't get that track out in December. Put out something, they have tons of tracks in the vault after this long a time. Oh well.

while in general I agree, I think De la is one of a few exceptions. I mean Nas could have just coasted off his earlier hits. instead he's steadily released albums that have gone up and down in quality, and sold a fair amount without many huge singles.

Regardless of sales though, De la just seem like creative dudes who definitely have been making music all these years, just not releasing it, and that's been frustrating as a big fan.

Inside De La Soul's Experimental, Crowd-Funded Comeback Record

"That element of not knowing what you're doing ... it felt like '3 Feet High and Rising'"

By Christopher R. Weingarten February 1, 2016

"I don't want to sit here and say it's another 3 Feet High and Rising, I would never say that," says De La Soul's Kelvin "Posdnous" Mercer about his group's upcoming eighth album, their first in 12 years. "But that element of not knowing what you're doing, like, it felt like 3 Feet High and Rising.Like, we walked in, we didn't know the rules."

The pioneering Long Island expressionist rap crew has come a long way from their 1989 debut, which turned hip-hop upside down with puzzling samples of learn-French records, delirious skits, out-of-this-atmosphere poetics and naughty noise. But for their first album in their 40s, And the Anonymous Nobody, De La aren't afraid to speed over the potholes on the road less traveled: Nobody will be the first album by a major rap group completely financed by crowd-funding site Kickstarter. The record was recorded with a live band, Los Angeles' Rhythm Roots All-Stars, and then manipulated later with producer Dave West. One song, the Little Dragon-assisted "Drawn," is an avant-indie opus full of plucked string counterpoints which goes nearly five minutes before anyone from this legendary rap group actually … raps.

"We couldn't do that on a regular label," says Posdnous. " How you gonna present them with a song like this? They may think it's beautiful but then it's like, 'Okay, so, there's no chorus. For maybe the first three minutes of the record, you’re nowhere to be found.'"

De La will be releasing the album under their newly minted AOI imprint. Physical and digital distribution will be handled by Kobalt, the label services company that has recently worked projects by Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Best Coast.

"The idea of signing (to) a label was a bit scary," says bandmate Dave Jolicoeur, who says they treated the Kickstarter campaign like a challenge. "We’ve been, obviously, on a label for about 20 years or so and then got moved and kicked around in the whole WEA system, and then ended up on Sanctuary. They really didn’t support that record (2004's The Grind Date). So just the idea of putting our project and what we create in someone else’s hands … is a scary thing."

This exploratory, self-funded, self-released album comes after a monstrously successful Kickstarter campaign last March. The group's $110,000 goal was met within hours — and then met nearly six more times. The group had put together a imaginative line-up of "rewards" for donors: $30 got you the album loaded on a thumb drive shaped like one of the group members' heads, $350 got you a hand-written lyrics sheet, $7,500 let you appear on a skit on the album. The group put in hours of work getting all the tiers situated with their project manager, Brandon Hixon.

"We love the freedom. But with that freedom and trying to run this, there's a lot of responsibility that goes into it," says Posdnous. "Because, you know, sometimes, you just wanna be, like, 'Alright, look, but today I need to write. Yo, man. Like, we've been on the phone for two hours. I gotta go!'

"If you take the time, and put on your big boy pants and realize if I just put in a little bit of work to get this to our fans and listeners who want to hear good music, they will be there. … You could either go into your minibar and pay $10 for the little Pringles or just walk right outside to the bodega and get it for a dollar."

The De La campaign was stocked with exclusive T-shirts, limited edition colored vinyl, and offers for video chats — not to mention the unmet (a $2,500 dinner with the group at soul food fusion mainstay Red Rooster went unclaimed) to the impossible (the idea for a sampler pre-loaded with the album ended up being scrapped). One of the more whimsical tiers, a $2,000 reward titled "Sneaker Pimpin," meant that two lucky fans got to spend the day shopping in New York with the group's resident sneakerhead, Posdnous.

"They were both from Australia, so I was just, like, honestly blown away," says Posdnous. "You're spending your money to fly from Australia just to hang out with me for a few hours?"

Though the original offer only promised a pair of signed sneakers and an afternoon hunting for kicks, Posdnous ended up calling in some favors to some sneaker companies for "parting gifts," and the crew ran into Jeff Staple, designer of the highly limited "Pigeon Dunks," whose rarity caused a small melee in 2005.

"I made a friend!" says Dave, who spent a day toy shopping in New York with a fan from Colorado. "He loves toys and stuff like that, but he just wanted to have a conversation. He wanted to talk and kick it and talk about music and hip-hop and pick my brain about everything De La. It was nice to see a fan use an opportunity to connect with an artist and really use it."

The record itself, like all their releases this side of the millennium, will feature a slew of guests, including, Damon Albarn, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Jill Scott, Pete Rock, Estelle, Roc Marciano and Justin Hawkins from the Darkness. 2 Chainz was suggested for a chorus and then he decided to rhyme. Though an attempt to grab Axl Rose never materialized, one of his fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers came through almost immediately.

"(There's) tons of tons of raw footage … of just jamming," says Posdnous … "We were going through a bunch of stuff. Just putting stuff in what was gonna be called the trash file. And so I made I point, 'Look at this song here, we can’t rhyme with this. This sound like something Talking Heads would be on,' and it was like, DINNNNG! Wait a minute, what if we got David Byrne to do this track?'

"He just did this amazing just humming and scatting over the beat. He said, 'I don't have the words yet but this is what I hear … Tell me what you think.' He's asking me for my opinions?! I'm like, 'You're fucking David Byrne! You shit on the track it's good!'"

The track, "Snoopies," is closer to their cosmopolitan genre-hopping with Gorillaz than their days in the Native Tongues of the Eighties. It constantly switches moods, mixing some Kraftwerkian bumps, psych-Dilla breakdowns and cut-up vocals with Byrne in the globalism philosopher mode of 1988's "Nothing But Flowers." Are the MCs whose most famous lines are meta-commentary about their place in hip-hop concerned where they'll fit in the landscape in 2016?

"I think we're comfortable in just feeling that we don't fit. … I think sometimes, the object that is all the way over there," says Posdnous, throwing his cellphone across the table, "you almost want to pay more attention, because the object's here, everyone's there. It's funny... We even at one point let Nas hear a bunch of tracks. And it was just dope how he was like, 'Yo man, this is like some avant-garde shit.'"

This is pathetic. Like 'we know our fans are weird nerds but we REALLY need some money'.

This is not experimental or creative or ground-breaking. It's desperate and weird. This must be embarrassing for them. I'm embarrassed for them just imagining the meetings where they were coming up with stuff. 'Ok Mace....you go to dinner with a couple of these nerds and get a couple grand. Pos....how bout you go shopping for a couple hours. A COUPLE HOURS? How bout one hour? Nah G....we can't charge them 2 grand for one hour.'

Have they made 100 tracks and feel they suck?

Have they made 4 tracks, but caught writer's block?

It's a fucking album - The Beatles put out two a year.

Le's give De la 10 times the time The Beatles used and then this albums 10 years late.

And after they suckered people with all possible money permutations on Kickstarter - and they don't communicate with people to let them know it's late - well it's bullshit.

I mean if it takes YEARS to clear samples then choose easier samples - or at least provide updates on a timely basis.

I think De La, Elzhi, etc. mistake is promising firm dates on anything. I agree they should be more forthcoming with notifications, even if it's to say once again we're not ready to drop the album, sorry guys.

On the flip side, some of you are running around like the only music you listen to is De La, you've had the release date circled on your calendar in red thick sharpie permanent marker, and them missing their deadlines is REALLY making you feel a certain way. That's your right since $ was spent I guess, but I don't really understand it, especially in regards to creating music/art, which doesn't follow a neat timeline, especially once you throw life, differing schedules, legal hurdles (samples)......everything that goes into making a quality album.......in the mix.

Elzhi got way behind, apparently almost got sued, and then came with a stellar album when it was all said and done. I have no doubt De La will do the same.

....in that from those really really really beloved groups they're one of the few left still together and capable of coming with greatness today and it not seem forced or a money grab.

I have no idea if any of that is factoring into their album-making process and I'd hope it would be at least partially motivating for them to know that the clamoring for updates, new music, anything comes from a good place.

In response to Reply # 75

With Elzhi, it seems like he didn't actually work on writing/recording the album until AFTER the Kickstarter had long been funded. That's an ass-backwards way to do it. Record the album first, then get the Kickstarter/Indiegogo money to distribute/master/whatever.

With De La, it seems like indeed a version of the album was done before they ever started asking for funding. You do get the genuine feeling that they're putting all the unexpected "bonus" money that they got from the campaign back into the album (hence, the newly recorded cuts with Snoop, Usher, etc.). I'd rather they did that than just pocket the surplus.

Ras Kass seems to be sort of splitting the difference with his campaign: he's got a bunch of tracks recorded already, but is seeking funding to pay for extra production and guests, who he outlines in his pitch. That project isn't going so well tho.

He's been on a nice winning streak to me with the Apollo Brown and Jack Splash albums.

Which is a little weird to me, since it seems like he has some sort of following.

But he's "re-releasing" Soul on Ice, with the previously unreleased tracks (I'm assuming it's the ones that have been circulating since 1995), plus some remixes, plus a whole new "Soul on Ice 2" album.

He said he's already got features/production from Diamond D, Immortal Technique, Apollo Brown, Alchemist, Vinnie Paz, Styles P, MOP, and Faith Evans, but is raising money to help pay for DJ Premier,The Rza, Anderson Paak, Justice League, Mos Def, L’Orange, and Thundercat. The money would also go towards mixing/mastering/manufacturing, and shooting videos.

Anywho, here's the link:

$5, just for the cause....that ain't gonna fly. $10, for a digital download, of his last album..not even his upcoming album. the $1000 and $7000 options are just stupid and ridiculous. also, one of the pictures listed is of him with his legs open, thank god he has shorts on, but still....just badly done all around. only good news is it looks like he keeps the funding, regardless of whether he reaches his goal, so he'll probably get at least 10 grand. so while he probably won't be able to do all he wants, he should get something done.

A lot of bands/groups that reach a certain point in their career keep somebody on payroll to document, blog, and act as the middleman between the fans and the artist. For a scenario like this, having a daily or weekly blog that fed updates (even if they were minuscule or vague) could make a world of a difference to those who are overly concerned about the shifting deadline.

I'm just saying they've held listening party events. See guru0509's posts in this thread.
I backed this album and have vinyl coming my way. Don't get me wrong, I want this album.
I just meant those getting upset and thinking there is no album coming need to chill.
I have no doubt it's coming.

Train wreck is fine, dug Dave's verse and the beat but the first verse and chorus are meh.

Beautiful Night is weak, glad I voted NO for that one.

Really hard to tell where they are going with the album, can't get an overall vibe from this release. I hope it's well-rounded and a fully realized project.

in that listening party video, and as hyped about it. Hearing it here, it's just ok. Doesn't elevate the song or anything. Beautiful Night beat is normal.
Supa Dav West on the second verse I would think. Song says Ft. Supa Dav West, not produced by.

I was expecting something amazing since it's suppose to be a teaser for the album, but this is the wrong hype to make, both songs were okay, but nothing special about them, more like album filler tracks, not on some "let me blow your mind with crazy bars" or "bug you out with off the wall Kool Keith wordage", it was a basic de la track.

Also what's up with those long ass skits, yeah the first one was funny but damn too long, the second one they should've put that in file 13 after recording it.

So after over a year of asking for money from fans, make them wait, record a bunch of material without having to go to a label head to decide what they should do, they give us a two song EP (with two boring skits), they obviously wasting time with this project and isn't putting any effort into it, I guess they rather be doing shows with their old catalog instead of making new classic material.

I gave them $45 for t-shirt and cd forever ago, didn't hear shit about shit for like a year, and now they're telling me August?

I love De La and the album concept sounded cool but whoever handled this whole thing fucked up.

I don't have high hopes for the album either. There a good chance of wackness.

We spoke above about waiting until August which stinks, but the project is done and will be out pretty soon. Not sure what there is to be so up in arms about?

My only concern is the "sleepy" flows they've shown on Trainwreck and the new snippet. It's a small sample size but I really hope they bring the energy vocally. That's what I'm hoping to hear with this joint. The features are all over the map and could go great or horribly wrong. Gotta have faith though, it's De La.

Album art and concept is pretty dope.

These new songs are missing that depth, that weirdness or De La speak that needs to be decoded. It's all pretty up front.

Wish the album was here already. No post in this thread since May is very interesting. They probably could be doing better to build momentum.

I liked "Pain" a lot, apparently more than a lot of you in here but this is more in the vein of what I typically expect from De La production-wise. Best one yet. Can't wait for this album.

Some dope lyrical work. But why in the hell do De La sound so sleepy on these songs? The vocal performances are so humdrum, even with cunning lyrics. Where is the energy?

They definitely don't sound excited to be there. I was originally attributing it to their being old haha.

I love me some LD and Yukimi, but the song really doesn't get going until about 3:30 and then it's catchy as hell. Pos with a quick verse, again with the sleepy flow. Says some clever ass stuff as usual. I don't know, it's a well made song but not enough De La on it.

Edit: musically it's beautiful. Especially the later part with Yukimi's clipped vocals and Dave with the mantra. Wish there was more of that.

These dudes are approaching 50 and had to crowdsource this one, after 12 years. Plus with all the label issues contained in the article about their struggles in making their material available in digital platforms ...... yea they're done after this. I hope I'm wrong but I have no expectations for any future proper albums.

What I'm hearing is ranging from ok to lower-case "good", but my excitement for this album is dwindling.

Pain was dope, Trainwreck has grown on me, Drawn is dope, though it's more of a Little Dragon song kinda featuring De La. Royalty Capes is hella dope.

cadence that's simple but dope as hell. Lyrics are sick too.

I'm ready for the album to be delivered and get into it. Feel like I've been fairly negative about the earlier releases but this and the second half of Drawn really got me in the feels. Just glad they are still doing it, and with quality.

The one with the most introspection maybe. Reading the reviews that are coming out, which seem pretty mixed, it seems it's a standout and a few others tackle more substantive topics as well.

Ebro, in all his glory, trying to act like he knows everything .... and claims BMS to be when De La "locked in with Jay Dee and those producers ...."

You could tell Pos was struggling to find a nice, non-obvious way to call him out on that. Stumbled over his words for a minute then "well, honestly, we didn't lock in with Jay til Stakes is High ..." hahaha.

The new album is cool at best. Royalty Capes the easy standout. Whoodeeni is like the Rock Co.Kane Flow of this album. I'm surprised the 2 Chainz feature worked this well. Glad he brought that Tity Boi flow back. The songs with Little Dragon, Damon Albarn, David Byrne and especially Justin Hawkins just didn't work. Still good to have De La back!

Copied from post in GD:

My main gripes are:

- Lord Intended: I hate the electric guitar. Not a good fit. Felt like it was a waste of some really good, aggressive lyricism
- Property of Spitkicker.com: pretty boring, don't hate it just didn't love it
- Snoopies & Drawn: the beats, once they picked up, were fire. Wish those parts were longer. I enjoyed David Byrne and Little Dragon's parts, but they both should have been WAY shorter to make room for the more upbeat parts and more lyrics from the guys
- Here In After - loved the concept and lyrics, but didn't love the Kings of Leon feel to the music

On a macro level my biggest complaint is NOT ENOUGH DE LA. And more specifically, not NEARLY enough Pos. Dave stole the show IMO during the minimal time either were actually rapping. As much as I enjoyed a lot of the album, I'm honestly kind of confused as to the direction they went with it. It's almost as if Dave and Pos took a *major* backseat on their own album. Almost none of the lyricism made me jump out of my seat, which is something I could always count on De La for.

My other complaint is one already lodged by someone in here, the overall mood is just too lowkey/somber. There were 2 or 3 songs that could be considered upbeat, but even those lacked any significant hype or excitement.

Other than the above, there's a lot to like here and I'll have to take some more time to take in the lyrics (in the minimal time they *did* spend rapping, there seemed to be tons of little wordplay gems to decipher which I'm excited about), I'm just surprised and a little disappointed with the overall tone and the lack of hard-hitting beats and lyrics.

PS - 2Chainz' verse is fucking fire !!

It's kinda just there. I'm not a big fan of De La's production. Outside of Stakes Is High, the albums they've produced on their own haven't been that good. They could've gotten a few tracks from some younger cats just to change up the vibe a bit.

"Quite honestly that was the point. our evolution as artists is to always go beyond being "typical" but at the same time if anyone knows our first album, that was very much beyond the norm when it came out, as well as knowing the rest of the catalog like Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes is High and the others, then they actually should understand this album but i do understand how some of our listeners prefer us to spit over beats (Stakes, Grind Date) and some love us more when we are being within the lane of creativity (3 Feet, DLID, Buhloone). I feel this album lives up to the spirit of all of them."

making interesting music and spitting some dope verses. More than that though, the doc highlights how real they are and down to Earth their approach is to music and life. They are thankful, but still feel like they have more to share.

The album, which stylistically is all over, is pretty clearly gonna be a grower. The guest features slow things down and kinda bloat the project but it's still an intriguing listen with great moments. Happy for them with this resurgence in relevance over the past year and change.

It's too slow. Music too slow. Rapping too slow.

David Byrne track is a great post-2000 David Byrne track - but slows when De La is on it.

But I know ME and my opinion could completely flip on 15th listen.

I'm hiking this weekend - so I'll listen some more.

There's 3 temptations one can fall into as a hiphop act using
unlimited live instrumentalists on an album.

1. The temptation of being too mellow (too much fender rhodes
syndrome)
2. The temptation of being too rockish.
3. The temptation of being to overdramatic sounding with strings and
such.

At times this album fell for all three temptations, it's really a
fine line to ride in a genre built on loops. And knowing when to pull
back a bit or be more aggressive with the instrumentation. But a good
3rd of this album nailed it. And the sound quality on the entire project is out of this world.

geeeez - way too mid tempo. I mean all the way through.

I'd say there are 5 songs I could go back to and say
yeah I'd like to hear these again.

the lord intended joint.

the song with 2chainz - the most upbeat, a great beat and verse from Chainz.

the song with Damon.

maybe the joint with snoop?

too many missed opportunities imo.

The Little Dragon collab? has a pretty bridge 3 mins in but tooooo slow, no life.

Have Usher and make a hiphop Counting Crows song. the hook is so fucking literal it's hilarious. Cash that crowd funding check Usher I guess, I mean they got you singing about greyhound buses. And not in a word play, metaphorical way ala Frank Ocean.

the pete rock joint? sleepy. as is almost the entire album.

the Roc Marci song? mixed poorly? sounds lower than rest of album.

the 2nd song on album? with the horns? has that Men in Tights melody..
coulda been a dope TRIUMPHANT sounding song but just too mellow.

I get some of the ambition - shit it's DEL LA!!
they are originators when it comes to experimenting.

but not enough deviation in sound

disappointing - album is just kinda there. blah.

Not a huge fan of Royalty Capes, and I think pain is in the wrong place, but besides that, fire. I didn't even notice them not rapping as much, which usually bothers me, bit on this joint it worked for me.

The David Byrne joint is my favorite so far.

Drawn is a bit disappointing, just because it ends just as it starts to ramp up, I think that one could have stretched on longer. Could have used a 6 min version.

It's great in spots, but the breadth of styles likely hurts it in terms of overall flow to the album. I can't see listening to this start to finish all that much.

Unfold is hard to listen to because of those Tom Waits/Iggy Pop-like vocals on the chorus. Just sounds corny. Rhymes are cool.

Here in After is a strange Pop take from De La. muscially I just can't get with it at all. I appreciate Dave's heartfelt lyrics though. But it's wrapped in a radio track that doesn't work. The end with Albarn singing is cool.

Snoopies is pretty dope and I like Whoodeeni too though that beat gets a bit grating.

Greyhounds, Royalty Capes, Whoodeeni and Trainwreck probably the standouts.

It's De La, I love them and will always support. This won't be a favorite of mine most likely, but it has some stuff to come back for.

I mean, I guess this place is so slow it doesn't really matter...but a fantasy-really-most-likely-not-going-to-happen-15-been-wrong-before Tribe album gets an anchor and an actual De La album doesn't?

Strange.

The intentions were good, but the execution is hit and miss. I'd even say that this is even more disjointed than Wu's effort.
