Rakim, Kool G Rap, KRS, Kane, Slick Rick, LL.

I feel like Kool G was more evolved than Rakim, but Rakim was more groundbreaking/innovative for his time. And he made better music/songs in my opinion.

he gets props for a style he allegedly pioneered. Cool

but his legacy is largely based off tha, cus he
hasnt been relevant since the 8Os..

the Master and 18th letter were both meh, meanwhile his peers was
dropping dope shit around the same time

KRs & G-rap are better imo. and have the body of work to show 4 it, and would rap circles around Ra

seems ppl are gassed off his "mystique" than anything else.

good rapper, but GOAT he's not. thats Nasir

People talk about Em's yelling, but KRS's yelling ("Black Cop" is my HELL) really is wack.

was a top notch MC. he could rhyme, but I never found myself rewinding on some oooooooooooh, he said what? his story telling is dope, but more in humorous way.

LL is/was dope. for me, Ra, Kane, & KRS was more intricate. LL's bravado stood out almost more than his rhyming.

He actually tells stories while rhyming his ass off such as "Who Rotten 'Em" for instance.
Can't play this man like he's Will Smith on some Parents Just Don't Understand type shit lol.

on the lists of many.

His late career turds were much more visible than the late career turds and/or non-output of the others.

For me, I've got Rick 5th but that's nothing against him. It's just that the 4 rappers that I've got above him are 4 of the top 7-8 rappers ever, IMO. I like Rick a lot though.

G Rap is the only one I don't personally rate as highly, though I understand others who do. I respect him more than I enjoy listening to him for the most part.

Kane was releasing turds during his prime though. People aren't holding that against him.

They definitely shuffled as I was growing up and going back and listening to older stuff. From my personal enjoyment:

1. Rakim - always the clear-cut best of his era. could stand tall with anyone from any era and usually come out on top.
2. Slick Rick - the stories, voices, personalities are phenomenal. also the best "songwriter" of the bunch.
3. Kool G Rap - up there with Slick Rick on the stories. quietly the second best of the bunch on the mic.
4. Big Daddy Kane - epitomized cool in a way that Jay Z never could. also had a powerful voice and command of the mic. i just wish he had a longer career.
5. KRS-One - his earliest stuff with BDP was more raw and had a kind of energy and immediacy lacking when he became more preachy later on. i kinda think he maybe had it roughest seeing rap/hiphop change the way it did.
6. LL Cool J - was never a big fan but i understand his influence and importance to the culture.

Maybe a more accurate historical ranking from a success/popularity perspective and their lasting effects and changes on the culture:
1. LL Cool J
2. Rakim
3. Big Daddy Kane
4. Slick Rick
5. KRS-One
6. Kool G Rap
