"Everything But the Girl fans"

I'm a big fan of Massive Attack and have always dug Tracey Thorn's vocal contributions on their Protection album so I decided to dig into her group's catalog. It's pretty massive so I was wondering if fans of the group could recommend three albums to start off with.

Amplified heart is my favorite and represents the apex of their early, loungier sound.

Walking wounded was the first post Miss You album and shows their electronica phase.

There's a lot of schmaltzy crap to wade through in their 80's and early 90's output; I'll get that out of the way right now. It's up and down, to say the least. If you don't like polished, super slick r&b pop (think Sade or the Style Council), you'll have a rough time with that stuff. They didn't get truly consistent until Amplified Heart, which was 1994.

The first album though (Eden, 1984) is fantastic and should be heard, just to see where they came from. Here's a highlight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgESYQ5iPtI

Idlewild (1988) is, in some ways, their pop masterpiece. It's from the late 80's, so the production shows its age, but the songs are excellent the entire way through. Here's a song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE0pHVizWJY

I'd agree on Amplified Heart. It's right there with their best work. And it has 'Missing' on it.

As far as the two electronic albums, I'm more of a Temperamental (1999) man, but Walking Wounded (1996) is easily just as good.

Have fun exploring.

(as if you weren't already intimidated by the catalogue)

If you like Eden, you should definitely check out Tracey's A Distant Shore (1982) and Ben's North Marine Drive (1983).

If you like Amplified Heart and the later EBtG albums, you'll probably like Tracey's Out of the Woods (2007) and Love and its Opposite (2010).

Ben's Hendra from last year is good, MOR pop.

you can't go wrong with that one for sure....its on my list of 'when i can't figure out what i'm in the mood for' albums....(you know, when you're in one of those modes where not sure what exactly you feel like listening to? There's a handful of records that will consistently satisfy regardless of my mood, and "Amplified Heart" is one of em....
