it definitely starts off as a cover of Slum Village's "Fall-n-Love"...probably a Black Radio joint, I'm searching now

EDIT: Robert Glasper - "Dillalude #2" from Black Radio Recovered. and I forgot about the "E=MC2" part at the beginning

You've got very good retro taste. I'm hit or miss. I was
fucking with Faulkner (as you remember, love him), then dipped
into Sinclair Lewis, who I couldn't stand

So I need to be a bit more careful with my retro shit

I be looking at these James Joyce novels side-eyed (never
bothered in the past, for whatever reason)

>man, them shits have been on my kindle for at least 3 years.

Yeah, I'm getting back into young adult shit, just because
I feel like when people nail that genre, they really do some
fabulous shit with it....mature enough that you can tackle
VERY serious shit (Hunger Games, for ex), light enough that
you can experiment with silliness...plus, you're not writing
for the New Yorker reviewer, so writers are more comfortable

Are you still pretending Lasers and Food and Liquor 2 were good? Because while we may all be frothing over post-Atlantic Lupe, no one is gonna retrospectively give you any credit for stanning over his duds.

But full credit for sticking with his potential when the rest of us abandoned ship.

No, I just wasn't a miserable nerd like the Lesson was.

I listened to the music.

I also didn't exclusively like black genocide rap (some
genocide music sounds really good, and is artful...problem is
that Lessonhead nerds, and most white rap fans, exclusively
bought that stuff, shunned the black kids who were thinking.
Its destructive, and I will never forgive Lessonhead types
for it, because you almost ruined the culture. Period)

I'll admit I rarely listen to either, but I think it's fair to say that both were at least *good* albums in that they offered enough good rap tracks so as not to dismiss them as *bad*

they just weren't as good as what we all knew Lupe was capable of

I'm cool with Lasers because I'm convinced Lupe did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. it was clear he was being force-fed those factory-line beats + hooks ("Words I Never Said" is borderline unlistenable IMO) and that he had to compromise his creative integrity to get it released. but it's hard to pretend he wasn't still coming with the heat lyrically--in fact WINS is probably the best example of this shitty beat/hook+fire bars dynamic

despite the label pressures, he managed to still sneak in that subversiveness that is so characteristic of all his work, only this time it was for a different audience and in a different format. form follows function?

I wasn't mad about it because I thought it was pretty clever how he flipped very commercial/pop-sounding tracks into something more politically potent. it wasn't made for lessonheads, but if its commercial success is any indication, it seems that a lot of people who come from a particular bracket of music consumption got exposed to a lane of lyrical quality/political thought that they might not have otherwise been exposed to. i'm sure not everyone will agree, but that quality in and of itself is worthy of praise IMO

as far as F&L II, I'm re-listening to it now and it's really not that bad. sure there's some filler but there's at least 10 *good* tracks on there. I think the Lasers ordeal definitely colored folks (including mine) experience with it

but I'll be damned if he didn't redeem himself (and the apologists) with these last two releases...

Under the guise of "I expect more from him," which was
just Nerd-ese for justifying a stupid double standard

Both albums were "good" at LEAST

And each had GREAT moments. GREAT moments.

So his career has pretty much been spectacular, front
to back

And now he's just destroying everyone and changing the
culture

He didn't evolve.
We did.

Were absolute trash. They were the most generic sounding electro poppy mainstream sounding rubbish he could find. And I'm happy to blame that on Atlantic, even though it might have partly been Lupe's taste. His rapping talent never slipped all that far, and you're right, there were great moments in amongst the trash, but damn if I didn't TRY and give him a chance. But you'll never admit that, and I won't continue to bang my head against a wall. Let's just all be happy that he's rapping over interesting shit and not catering to anyone but himself now.

This is why the Lesson is full of stanky nerds.

Instead of saying what you all KNOW:

"Damn, Lupe is eons ahead of everyone rapping right
now."

You nerds say shit like:

"This is way better than Food and Liquor 2 and Lasers"

You can't bring yourselves to stop being dweebs and just
admit the facts.

Lupe just sank your nerd battleship and I'm LAUGHING.

I can understand people's case with LASERS, and I agree with your opinion. I think it's simply "convenient" - and frankly, lazy, to write off F&L2. He had a few average tracks on there, but to your point, there are at least 8-10 good tracks. I think most people that don't like either album simply got fed up with following his "storyline" during that time (e.g., label beef, the inner demons he was wrestling with).

Between the loosies from the past couple years, Tetsuo & Youth, and this, Lupe definitely has a case as best rapper out right now. No one can do what he's doing. T&Y and PH are two of the year's best projects

I'd like to hear Lupe's explanation for that.
But other than that, this is a more a return to form for Lupe than even T&Y was. This has me even more hopeful for his post Atlantic releases. I'm only into my second listen right now, and it's dope. I don't have a fully formed opinion yet, but it's all sounding good right now.

It's not that difficult, as there is an entire generation
of really smart kids who have decided that college isn't
for them

And Google is routinely snatching MIT-bound kids right
from high school (its true)

And even kids IN college see it differently than kids
in prior generations....they are now simply leveraging
to find a way to their passion, rather than college as
an end in and of itself

See how easy that was?

Not very difficult.

You who obsesses over the idea of "the lesson" to the point you can't come into a post without mentioning this "entity" that you yourself are a very large part of.
FOH.

And I'm well aware of the things you're talking about. That doesn't however mean that college is for cowards. Especially when Lupe is very much about Black upliftment and for many (not everyone, granted) college is an avenue to other things that they might not otherwise have access to. Does that make them cowards? No. And as you and I both know, Lupe is VERY intentional with his words, so I'd like to know what he was trying to communicate, not what the fuck you think, which doesn't actually address the question I had.

But like I said, I only listened once and that line really stood out. I didn't go back to the song yet.

You can get off my dick and go back to obsessing over The Lesson. Asshole.

He's a smart enough dude, can even be funny.

But he's painfully insecure. I don't know if
his mother didn't hug him, he didn't live up to his
potential, he was picked on a lot, or maybe he
had a promising athletic career fall apart....
maybe it's a combination.

Don't take it personal.

He can't think beyond agenda. He has no
concept of nuance or context.

Every lupe thread turns into this because
he can't stand that people are feeling lupe
again. There's nothing to fight about anymore
so he picks odd things to fight about.

He needs to make himself feel tough.

What does he call the lesson?

Wimps?

Nerds?

It's really everything that applies to him.

Notice that this internet tough guy never
actually talks about the music. Never.

He claims that's what he's about, but look
how many times he's in here talking about
The lesson?? Not a single music post.

It's too bad too because again he can have
great insight when he isn't acting like
an insecure sad teenager.

And he derails these threads acting like
a dweeb. He can't let the thread be about lupe
and his music. It has to be about orbits agenda
so he can feel like the toughest dude on
the net. It's sad for this place, sad for lupe,
and sad for him. I legit feel bad for him.
