What year did this become common? I'm thinking 1987 or so?

Kool Moe Dee's Go See The Doctor had an track called "Go See The Doctor (Almost Clean)"

I know that in 1982 The Message from Grandmaster Flash et. al. had a radio version too.

I'll bet all those USgar Hill and Enjoy records had radio edits.

I wish more people put in the work that Dr Dre did.... he had full reworded clean versions that were just as cold as the dirty versions..

I like when they do that^^^^ (ODB "Brooklyn Zoo", for example), I like the DJ Premier sound effect route, and I'm a sucker for the backwards curses.

The clean version is so good because of the sound effects in the song.

I always thought the radio version said "My Homie Snoop Doggy Dog is on his back."

And:
Well, I'm peeping, and I'm creeping, and I'm creepin'
But I damn near got caught
Cause my beeper kept beeping

Half the people knew the video version (stupid dope gang with an attitude) and the rest had the album version (from the gang called Niggaz Wit Attitudes). As a middle schooler, I was quite impressed. That takes skill that 75% of rappers don't have.

I am also a fan of Premier's sound effect scratches. Done right they almost make the song sound better

Todays edits are just kinda lazy

There's the 7" version which is short and then you have the original long version which has more verses but the one line Big Bank Hank said "Super Sperm" was not radio playable.

It was too long for most radio stations.

I still think he's saying "Super Sporm" like Captain Sky:

In response to Reply # 16

Despite the fact prophylactics came during the AIDS crisis, it was considered a way of saying "put this on your penis and have safe sex", which was still naughty in 1990. You may have loads of songs with penis or condom metaphors but say the actual word and that would limit your airplay. It may sound city now but let's not forget some stations banned George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" so it became "I Want Your OW!", yet three years later, those same stations were playing Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up". Times change, what was considered profane would eventually become acceptable, a bit like House Of Pain's "I ain't goin' out like no punch bitch" or "I'm smackin' the ho" in "Jump Around". Some stations actually had no idea those words were being said until people called up and said "I am offended".

But yeah, it had a bit to do with "community standards" before, which is why some stations got away with "prophylactics", others played it as "scitcalyhporp" for years until the mid to late 90's, around the time when Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy" broke down the door a bit.
