Put together a list of Top 50 Ice Cube tracks after going through his discography again. Yep, there was a reason he was my favorite rapper during the late '80s/early '90s.

Listened to the second NWA album & 100 Miles EP last week.

Spent the weekend listening to Eazy E's entire discography.

It's amazing how explicit and intense music was in the early 90's.

Cube was conscious, but that music was hot as a blowtorch. That being said, there's no way a top artist could be as explicit and misogynistic as he is on his early solo records.

Maybe the 2Pac / Biggie rivalry was the turning point, but music after that seemed to lack the intensity of the music that came before it.

I think I need to listen to a sermon after listening to Death Certificate to cleanse my spirit. Ha.

I don't think I realized that he was had a very 80s flow in the early 90s, but today it's unmistakable.

for me, "eazy-duz-it" > "straight outta Compton"

anyone else felt/feel this way?

from start to finish, it's more consistent and enjoyable to me.

yeah it doesn't have the important songs like "f---- the police" "straight outta Compton" and "gangsta gangsta"

but its highs are still pretty classic: "nobody move" "2 hard muthas" "we want eazy" the title track etc.

and I still laugh at cube and eazy's "old man" routine on "still talkin". shit's hilarious.

side B of SOC really loses the momentum from side A. we get three remixes from songs we already knew, the not-as-good-as-the-remix version of "express yourself", and the dope-old-school-but-doesn't-really-fit "something 2 dance 2" (I loved Arabian Prince). ren goes off on "quiet on the set", but we'll always compare it to the doper "if it ain't ruff". side b of SOC sounds like a bunch of b-sides that were added just to complete an album. I remember I used to just keep rewinding side A in my Walkman.

whereas "eazy-duz-it" keeps shit going, even on the softer "radio" side B. I mean, "eazy duz it" and "we want eazy" were quality radio songs/videos! "no more ?'s"--that sample loop change on the last verse!!! "i'mma break it down"--that fuckin whale sound??? that drum loop??? HELL YEAH.

I don't know, "eazy-duz-it" didn't take itself as serious as SOC too, and it still has a little of that old school innocence that was never recaptured. it was just as funny as it was scary. and maybe that was just eazy's personality--for every "boyz in tha hood" moment there was a "fat girl" moment.

Most folks said SOC or No one can do it better. But I felt Eazy's is right there. Rap wise/lyrically, of course not, but production wise, and just his overall personality? Yeah, it puts it close.

SOC does have the truly standout songs, though, so it wins overall from that.

that's a great poll to take.

for whatever reason, NOCDIB took a back seat for me. I listened to it a lot, but definitely not nearly as much as E-D-I and SOC. I think I moved right onto "livin' like hustlers" as soon as that dropped.

>SOC does have the truly standout songs, though, so it wins

yeah, it shows just how GREAT the great songs on SOC were/are.

NOCDIB was sooooo cold. Been a while since I went through the other 2, but Eazy Does It was more consistent that SOC if memory serves (even if SOC had bigger highs and lows). I still have DOC in the iPod, but will need to revisit the other two soon

and a really strong case for most influential of all time.

thinking off the cuff, the motif that he created was the primary narrative for rappers...until kanye arrived. so that's from 87 to 2004?

and even kanye had some ice cube-esque elements sprinkled throughout his rhymes during his first years as an artist.

I don't know...I may be wrong, but I've always heard ice cube in snoop, big, nas, jay, and of course 50.

I relistened to the full lp for the 1st time in years and was blown away by the production (again). I forgot how nasty the Findum Fuckem & Flee beat is on a knockin system. Approach To Danger & Real Niggas Don't Die are astounding. The entire album sounds remarkable 24 years later, which can't be said about alot of albums from 91 (exception to Death Certificate & De La Soul is Dead..)

I revisited D.O.C.'s album and it still sounds good too. Also, MC Ren - Shock If The Hour (slept on and very good).

...and never has been.

I've always been more Tribe/Wu/East Coast boom-bap than NWA/Death Row/gangsta rap. A part of it is the lyrical content and delivery, but honestly it's more due to beat/production preference.

I did come out with a better understanding of why/how someone could have Cube as a GOAT candidate. Not that I found it a crazy claim before and not that I was oblivious to dude, but his albums weren't something I had listened to front to back until the movie was coming up.

So it's never really left my rotation. I did revisit Eazy Duz It, SOC, and N4Life..as well as the spawns of NWA like early Snoop, The Chronic era Dre & The Dogg Pound..

As far as Amerikkka's Most..I feel like that album is a essential must listen for every black male, even still today.

Death Certificate was damn good too..

AMW, KAW, and DC were/are unfukwitable. I was a die hard east coast head, and Rakim will always be the GOAT until I'm dead and gone. But for that album run, nobody was fucking with Cube

my stomach simply because it wasn't a hands down, front to back classic. You could hear the decline, you could feel it. Never before had I heard an Ice Cube rap, and said "Ehh, that was cool, let's see what's next". All of his verses were important up until that point.
And because of the letdown I felt with "Predator", to this day I've NEVER heard "Lethal Injection" in it's entirety. "Bop Gun" let me know that it was pretty much over. The last couple songs on "Lethal Injection"? I don't think I've ever heard them in my LIFE.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

He was still a star, he just wasn't the Cube WE came to love. I mean, my rappity rap fan crew hated on "It Was Written" too. But there are many people all over the US who didn't start checking for Nas until "It Was Written".
I knew the Westside Connection thing was huge, but I hated feeling like Cube had been taken from us somehow (the East Coast rappity rap fans).

I'll say this: the Westside Connection album is not good at all. Well, maybe two songs were dope ("Gangstas Make the World Go Round" and "The Gangsta, The Killa, and The Dope Dealer"), but the vast majority of the album ranges between corny and just bad. THAT album was the first wack one I'd heard Cube make, and fucked over his career. I think I've liked five Cube songs since.

Yes, "Bop Gun" is bad. Really, really bad. But there's a lot to like about the album as a whole. I'd say the Side B is better than Side A. Side B has the o.g. "What Can I Do?" and "Lil Ass Gee" (both dope, though the remixes are better), "Make it Smooth, Make it Rough," "Down 4 Whatever," and "Enemy." And though Side A has "Bop Gun," it also has "Really Do", "You Know How We Do It," (remix is better, but still), and "Ghetto Bird," which is just outside my top 10 for all Ice Cube tracks ever.

I put Cube up as one of my favorite rappers ever, and his first few albums were incredible. But at this point in my life, I just don't have the desire to listen to them beyond a few cuts. Same with the Chronic, Doggystyle, Dogg Food, etc.

I'lll go back to old music all the time, but a lot of the NWA tree is just way too over the top as far as content goes for me to bother with now.

I went back and played Death Certificate the other day and only end up listening to like 4 songs. No way I can bump full albums of NWA, CMW, etc. anymore. Just not my lane.

I got some of the singles from N.W.A., Ice Cube, Easy E, Dre, Ren, even Arabian Prince, but I haven't listened to any of their albums since they came out, I remember not caring for none of their music after 1994 came and underground hip-hop basically blowing rap artists of earlier out the water on production and rhymes; "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" was probably the only album I listened to the most, and you already know how I feel about Dr.Orchestrate (never cared for "The Chronic").
