>I see one dude chasing you in this post lol
That's a good way to put it. Don't get me started....
>You think a rapper saying nonsense just to rhyme is better >than a guy using word play to actually make a point or >construct a narrative?
It's a battle rap/cypher. So yea - I'm judging nothing more than flow and entertainment value. I don't typically look for well constructed storylines and concepts in my battle raps and I'm surprised to know that anyone does.
>and you just restricted my use of the phrase "saying >something" to just political rap? Like songs about life, love, >crime, or project buildings turning into robots couldn't >contain word play? Most political rap doesn't even use that >much word play, most of the time they just make straight >forward analogies or get very literal in whatever topic they >reference so they can stay on subject. > >. . .what in the world?
Dude. We're talking about a BET cypher. Not a Roots album. But that said, even if we *are* just talking about the general comment "I don't like rhyming words that say nothing" then you are seriously cutting out a good chunk of rap music. Which is fine, everyone has their preferences. But a lot of Black Thought verses/songs, a lot of Biggie songs, etc....are examples of these great MCs just flowing and saying random shit to get a reaction out of people with no particular aim or endpoint in mind. In fact that's pretty much how the artform was born. MCs' sole purpose was to move the crowd and sound dope, not necessarily say anything profound or deep. So anyway I guess this "I don't like message-less verses" type commentary just surprises me coming from someone who's presumably a fan of hip-hop because of where we're posting.
> You just had the most narrow minded response to what I said >lol, metaphors, similes, analogies and all that good stuff all >constitute word play, "I don't rhyme for the sake of riddlin" >come on dude, don't throw logic out the window just to cape >for Eminem. and restricting that to political rap is an odd >point to try and make.
For the record I'm not "caping for Eminem" in fact I haven't been a fan of much of anything he's done since 2009. But good work is good work.
Anyway, fair point about my restricting your comment to "political rap." I'll grant you that. But .... see above.
>Lupe is the perfect example of somebody with word play who >uses it to say something, it speaks more to a rappers skill if >they can put words together and actually make a point as >opposed to just saying nonsense because the words rhyme, that >shit is like grading on a curve. Ok, you can rhyme, but can >you make sense nigga? lol
Sure, no doubt. But it takes all kinds man.
>and of course it's rapping, did I not he say he gets it on the >technical side? but i don't care how fast a dude can rap or >how many polysyllabic phrases he can get out without screwing >up, nonsense will never trump logic.
Fair. To each their own. I just didn't see a reason to totally disregard it, is all. There's room for both kinds of MCs, and MCs who can do both.
>Basically, if two fools are battling nobody is gonna pick the >guy saying nonsense just to rhyme with no actual rebuttal to >someone using word play that is great and actually making a >point to get at their competitor. > >When I say nonsense I mean totally pointless, borderline >gibberish just for the sake of rhyming, of course you can say >that his jokes are the point, but in comparison to Mos & >Thought that shit is nonsense. ----------------------------------------
