"Drake's producer 40 defends use of Ghostwriter on '10 Bands'"

He basically says Drake does write many of his songs and many songs for others but never denied Drake using reference tracks or writers. He also says "drake isn't just a rapper. He's also a musician and a producer and a creator."

that's not hiphop

For instance, Dr. Dre raps about his accomplishments but you dont hear him shittin on other rappers, calling himself the best out, or saying niggas cant fuck with his pen.

Drake kinda cornball for this one

lol. that's subjective. i'm just agreeing that using reference tracks and giving credit to writers is one thing and it really is commonplace in every genre of music to do that, like 40 was saying. And then actually getting a ghostwriter and passing the lyrics of as your own is another thing and that's not what has happened here. *However, yeah doing a feature on someone else's album and using a writer is lame.

thank the hip-hop gods i grew up in the 90's, even if it was happening people fans wouldn't have accepted it and artist didn't admit it, because they believed in upholding the integrity of the art form. If people had the same perspective back then Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer would've been ranked higher than the skilled mc's we hold in high regards.

I always thought his voice and delivery were less than decent.

If he doesn't write his own shit, he has absolutely no value as an artist imo.

Kool G Rap, LL Cool J, King of Chill all wrote some of the biggest songs for well respected MCs back in the day, even some of their biggest hits.

Nas: When I saw him, being 17-years-old, producing those…not no bullshit tracks, I saw what rap music was going to become. He helped me because I only knew half of what was going on. I knew about the pen touching the paper. Paul knew that too, but he also knew to tell me, “Don’t say this. Take that out. Why would you say this? That makes you look crazy! This word don’t make no sense.”

So that means he was ghostwriting and he made reference tracks for has?

Thats usually how rapper-producer relationships are like they're both invested in making a quality record.

But it's time to dispel the myth of the singular rapper putting his rhymes together from conception to what you hear. If Nas was getting help on what's basically universally known as the standard for hip-hop lyricism, it means the process of other people revising lyrics is much more common than people want to admit. If you have a mental line drawn between what's OK and what's not OK, i.e. that reference tracks are not OK but having other emcees edit your rhymes are OK, then that's your preference, but the lines are much more grey than people wanted to admit (since it's not just about one writer vs many writers but now there are many writers and the disagreement is over the level of input from said writers).

And just to throw some bait out there, remember Fade to Black, when Kanye made the Lucifer beat for Jay and did both the intro "I"m from the murder capital where they murder for capital" and the flow that Jay uses mid-song ("Man I gotta get my soul riiiiight") - was that OK?

I know OKP think that Drake is the first platinum rapper to have a ghostwriter or ghostwriter for his hooks.

I'm not a fan of drake or listen to the mane, but he's just like all these wack radio rappers, no skills so they need to pay for it elsewhere.

C'mon it's a ton of rappers out there that has or had ghostwriters, I wouldn't be surprised that 60% of the rap songs on the radio right now is ghostwritten (even if it's elementary abc rhymes); you all are the ones listening to this wack shit and now crying over spilled milk.
