This may need its own post, I don't know...but since this happened quite often on older rap records ("Wrath of Kane", "Dead Presidents", etc) can those of you who were out and about for all that "golden age" stuff point out which version of each song would be considered "the definitive version" when the song is brought up? Johnny-come-latelys to this hip hop -- like me -- would appreciate that for educational purposes.

My sense is that the album version is the standard. A version released on a white label or as a B-side, is generally referred as the 'white label' version or the LP version.
That's how would, but I'm sure others may feel differently.

Like, they record two different sets of verses for the song that are going to be lead singles or whatever. I guess to see which version the public likes better. Most of the time, there's a version that's obviously better.
I remember tha Beatnuts did this for "No Escapin This", which was obviously a single. On the Greatest Hits version, there was an alternate version from the single and from "Take it or Squeeze it".
You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

b/c Pac's rhyming on the album version is more aggressive than that in the video version. and the instrumentation on the album version is different too.

one of those songs where they took the time to (mostly) replace swears and street language with more radio-friendly lyrics and I think it turned out even more enjoyable than the album version.

Album version just has Big Mike and a guest verse from 3-2; video version has a final verse by Scarface. I don't think the video version has ever been available. Looked it up on Discog and the 12"/CD single's track-listing "Straight Gangstaism" and "Straight G-Ing", but I'm almost positive I've heard "Straight G-Ing" and it doesn't have the 'Face verse either. Been searching for it forever.

album version without his verse. I remember trying to find the version with Face back in the Soulseek era, never came up with anything.

Video version is completely different: different verses, different beat, etc. Much prefer it to the album version. I don't think it's ever been commercially available either.

I could be wrong since even tho I own the Sauce Money Middle Finger U LP (I never cracked it) but I believe the 12" single for Pregame feat. Jay-Z had a bonus Sauce verse
