"The Writer's Bench - Your Top 5 Debut Albums NOT Named Illmatic"
For this week's episode of the Writer's Bench we're chopping it up about our top 5 debut albums not including Illmatic in any genre and we also end up chopping it up about who's discography is doper, Tribe or Gang Starr's & if you were on a deserted island, what would you rather have Tribe's 5 albums or Gangstarr's 6 albums to hold you down? My question for ya'll are what are your top 5 debut albums NOT named Illmatic and why & who are you taking with you to the island, Tribe or Gang Starr?!?!?!

TRIBE-Peoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm WYCLEF-The Carnival BIG-Ready to Die DELA-3 Feet High and Rising LAURYN-The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
DISCLAIMER: This is my list after not much thought... i'm prob. going to think of others that will dethrone one or more of my top 5 once I have watched this EP.
Also, with my picks, I am sort of keeping the "alone on an island" thing in mind too.

In no particular order.
Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night EPMD - Strictly Business SOM - '93 'til Infinity Guy - Guy Jeru Da Damaja - The Sun Rises...
EDIT: I forgot Enter the Wu-Tang. I don't know where it fits in though.
You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles
1 Closing Time - Tom Waits An incredible beginning to an incredible and unpredictable career. Probably his most accessible album and some may prefer his more experimental efforts but the songwriting on here cannot be denied. Martha...come on son...who is writing and singing like that from that perspective at like 23 years old?
2 Doe or Die - AZ Fuck It Was Written...this is the album that was overshadowed by Illmatic. Any album that runs down Uncut Raw - Gimme Yours - Ho Happy Jackie - Rather Unique - I Feel For You - Sugar Hill - Mo Money is a classic.
3 Center of Attention - iNi Not even if this shit counts since it never officially dropped but fuck it...this is one of my favorite hip-hop albums of all-time. Pete was in a zone and the MCs, much like you guys said in reference to Slum Village, simply played their part and meshed nicely with the production.
4 Word...Life - OC I feel this album doesn't get the credit it deserves. OC makes perfect hip-hop. The title track - O-Zone - Born To Live - Time's Up - Point O Views. What's fucking with that? I always group this album and Resurrection together. They both just had a soulful, organic vibe to them that is timeless.
5 Coming From Where I'm From - Anthony Hamilton Raw, gritty, southern r&b soul music. Hamilton just had a unique sound and voice that set him apart to me. I love all his album but this is where it started and I will always rock this joint.
Now as far as Gang Starr v Tribe...
I feel you Kil, Tribe is bulletproof and I don't really agree with it. People can say what they want but out of both discographies, I'll take Moment of Truth first. That's how much I love that shit.
Good looking for that fam! As long as I got at least one cat rocking with me I'm good lol! To me it's a no brainer that I'm taking Gang Starr's discography and that's not a knock on Tribe at all but all I'd be banging on that album is Low End & Midnight like that. But I'm listening to EVERY Gang Starr album easy! But that's just me...not mad at ANYBODY who disagrees.

Jazzmatazz - I always looked at this as Guru's 1st solo debut so that's why it get the nod. Original Stylin - Three Times Dope...I LOVED this album! Run DMC's self titled album...this opened up so many doors for hip hop and I still listen to 30 Days like it just came out. Three Feet High & Rising - De La Soul All For One - Brnad Nubians
