Did you check out his Hell Can Wait EP? That's the sound him and No ID got. Common's last LP has that sound as well but his voice doesn't work with it IMO. Vince, on the other hand, is perfect for it.

I've only listened a couple times now.
But given the title and what Vince has said about this album it sounded like there would be a narrative. I haven't picked up on it yet, if there is one.

Anyone else?

But that Vince was Crippin pretty hard. Robbing, slanging, and shooting. He ends up meeting a girl at a party. But he can't leave the life alone. He wants to get out and be with her but he continues robbing, slanging, and shooting.

Now, I know better than to believe the stories rappers tell. But from interviews that he's always pretty vague in Vince has said that he was crippin pretty tough and something happened (he's mentioned at statute of limitations or lack of) and he had to leave LBC to go to Atlanta. He said when he was in ATL, he didn't get a single phone call from any of the homies which is why when he got back to Cali, he pretty much just stopped fucking with them and started concentrating on music.

So back to the music. He talks about being a shooter. Talks about his homies getting killed and then going for revenge. Mentions killing a few people. Talks about police and feds snooping around. Talks about people snitching. Regular gangsta rap shit.

But I can't yet put a cohesive narrative together.

Album is good though. I kinda wish there was more of a variety in sound and it's a few tracks too long. But there's some a lot of good shit on here.

While many of the beats are nice, he wrote better overall songs on Shyne Coldchain II.
After a few listens, the only songs that have stuck for me are

"Dope Man"
"Jump Off The Roof" (best song on here, imo)
"Senorita"

And those 3 are back to back. One great thing about Vince tho is that I just like hearing
him rap, so his songs don't necessarily have to be great to be tolerable to me.
I still can't lie and say this is a great album to me tho.

Outside of those 3 tracks, maybe 1 or 2 more, it all kind of blends together.

vol 2 was neck and neck with PTSD for album of the year for me.

This is pretty disappointing. Maybe it will click at some point.

The Boogie joint is a lot better if you ask me.

Shit is like an hour and a half rant from Matthew Mcconaughey of True Detective season 1. Great but dark.

You could tell Ali was trying to force Vince to admit SOMETHING positive, lol

In response to Reply # 34

he has it figured out from his perspective: growing up was hard, my story is way realer than the bullshit rappers sell you

though I'll say I think he leans on that a little hard. his "persona" if you will is the genius who made it out

what's dope is how many different hats he can wear: he can give Hot 97 goofy answers and NPR super in depth thoughts

49. "Like that the world is bigger than his block."
In response to Reply # 38

He had what seemed to be a critique of capitalism but he doesn't have the language to articulate that so instead he resorts to saying "everyone is dumb because we believe that money is real." He also seems to think that it's the way of the entire world and that there is nothing else in existence or possible.

He said that on one hand he doesn't want the people coming up under him to suffer. But that on the other hand he does, because he did.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

He critiqued that way "we" are talking about this latest round of racial unrest by saying "a white person can't/doesn't care that a black person was killed by the police." And he goes into this "humanity" stuff. Without understanding that the whole shit, BlackLivesMatter and all that, is about us being human. and respecting our humanity

And this is just what i remember 3 days after listening to the interview. He's clearly a very smart kid, with very underdeveloped ideas and understanding of the world.

I really think some more formal education would benefit him if he could let go of some of his "know it all/no one can tell me shit" personality.
He should hang out with Chance.

In response to Reply # 49

I think they would cancel each other out. Chance almost always skews towards positivity when you hear him on songs and in interviews.

And you're right about Vince going past his block. Vince does seem to have his block totally figured out. But he's on that nihilistic Rust Cohle shit as if situations don't work out for the better sometimes.

Yet Vince knows that he contributes to all of that. The self-awareness Vince shows (and Earl too) is something I'm noticing more and more out of that 25 under crowd. The sensibility is so melancholy and pessimistic...but still rooted in truth.

Ali's such a positive dude that he had no choice but to lightly spar with some of Vince's points. I could've listened to an entire interview of Ali and Vince going back and forth on society and spirituality.
