"Why is Masta Ace not generally in Top 5 GOAT convos?"

Because he has no great albums? No radio play? How does Kool G. Rap get more mention then him though?

Seems like soo many lesser MCs get more mentions than Masta Ace.

'cause Em is known for fast rhyming, yelling, comedy, weird voices, etc. Beastie Boys type stuff

that's what has come through from Em to my years.

Definitely rocked the nasal voice in the '90s, when Em was coming up.

Especially around Slaughtahouse and Crooklyn Dodgers. Dude was borderline B Real.

I have more than once convinced myself that "brainiac dumb-dumb, bust the scientifical" was a B-Real verse intro. Listen to Jeep Ass Niguh and if you don't hear the comparison before Ace says, "Mira, mira, mayng!" then it just may be one of those things you don't hear that others do.

It had Em nasal voice comedy rhyming on the first hit "my name is" (as well as weird voice rhyming, etc.

Em was also nasal comedy voice rhyming on the next video/single "guilty conscience"

Em then had a career after that that WASN'T DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT from the "slim shady LP"

"Disposable Arts" was released in 2001.

so....uh....is there anything on "disposable arts" similar to the "Slim shady LP"?

Because if there is, 1999 is BEFORE 2001, understand?

Well there has been a few who did list him in their top 10 but that's been a long time since a slew of rappers/emcees have emerged in the past 10 years.

I like Masta Ace, loved "Slaughtahouse" but he' never been that emcee who had flow like Pharoahe Monch or Blackthought, excitement like Busta Rhymes, or fast rhyming like Treach or Chip-Fu, or crazy wordplay like Redman or Ghostface; Masta Ace is just a kat who was lucky to be among a crew of other dope emcees..he's like Inspectah Deck of the Wu, he got dope verses but never outshines the other members of the Wu when they spit.

had a memorable presence, on or off the mic. Jazzmatazz wouldn't exist if it was really all about Primo's beats. Guru was just fly dude, he actually made being older & more mature look cool. And most of his songs were about something, it wasn't just a collection of cool verses. I don't think you can really grasp Guru's overall impact if you weren't listening to rap in the early 90's.

been just as successful than Masta Ace was during that time period.
Post 2000 Masta Ace was making better music than Guru, but by that time Ace had little to no mainstream notoriety. Ace didn't even have any music out between 1996-2000.

He's in my top 30. I'm just saying that I have seen posts on this site that said that about Guru.

good anymore. If you (not you but the people saying that) got familiar with both artists in the internet forum era, then Masta Ace was hands down the superior artist. But both artists were a bit past their heyday at that point.

His cadence compared to the other top members is very basic. Now mind you...this is his strength. His punches are not the most complex but they are consistent.

His strength is his albums. When he is manning the show solo, you are guaranteed to get a well thought out concept that stands on its own.

I mean...how many artists could give you Slaughterhouse, Disposable Arts, A Long Hot Summer and Son of Yvonne in the same career?

But that's the thing...he's not a fireworks rapper.

He is the Emmett Smith of Hip Hop...and I don't think that's a bad person to be.

We talk about Kane, G Rap & Biz Markie's work before his. Even Shan has had bigger moments than Ace did, realistically. And Trag moves me more than Ace, but catalog wise I'll go with Ace.
Main problem is there's no "it" factor, no star power. The talent was always there, but his rap persona isn't all that interesting. Being a great "everyman" rapper only takes you so far.

Ace has always been one of my favorite MCs since the Juice Crew days. Even if he never reached the highs of other MCs, either commercially or artistically, he has always been a force to be reckoned with, and really hasn't had a bad album. Besides, if Em STILL gives you major props for his style, you can't beat that co-sign. Without it, though, he's still a legend, hands down

I used to argue Kweli vs. Nelly and it really got me upset. But when you see things from a bigger perspective. That rappity rap is only gonna make an mc "your favorite rappers - favorite rapper"

I ain't mad no more. I like lyrics. Some people don't like to think and listen (or listen and then think and rewind) and thats fine.
I like an album that I can listen to 5 years later and hear something new, because I have learned something new and can now understand a line I've heard 100 times before (or just google it the 1st time).

I'm ranting. Could go on forever but...some music ain't for some people...

TOP 5 IS PUSHING IT THOUGH!

…I do, and it's not even close imo….Ace is much more diverse, and has grown as an artist….Eminem, while skilled, is still on that juvenile ish…very tired, a different universe

Not saying Em can't rap, but he's never been my cup of tea. Masta Ace is a legend to me, top 10 maybe, 20 for sure.

...Eminem falls into that Tongue Twista, Chip Fu type category: amazing display of skill, but the music is meh (no offense to chip fu, a solo in 92 might have been cool)

>Because he has no great albums? No radio play? How does Kool
>G. Rap get more mention then him though?

Disposable Arts and A Long Hot Summer are great, classic albums. Radio doesn't play the vets from the golden era so that's not a slight any way you look at it.

eMC lowkey puts out quality albums.

Ace low-key killed Eminem on this song:

Ace is a such a legend that he's in the conversation with people from that golden era still putting out music like Hov (put out his first tape in 86 with Jaz), LL, G Rap, etc.

never totally understood the hype over long hot summer, though i was a BIG fan of his first 2 albums. he seems to have become quite whimsical, and cutesy even since the 3rd album, so ive kinda tuned out.

73. "Impact/influence (or lack thereof)"
In response to Reply # 0

I figure the most influential thing Ace did was being a big pioneer of his self-titled "onbeat/offbeat" style and his rhyme patterns are pretty advanced for his era. Still, G Rap had great rhyme patterns at the same time and is a hardcore rap pioneer.

Ace influenced cats like Eminem and probably many more

But G Rap has a legion of great emcees who either directly cite him as an influence (Pun) or who folks generally consider to be influenced by him (Nas, and indirectly everyone influenced by Nas' style).

Can Ace be credited with the first concept album with Slaughterhouse or did someone beat him to it?

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)
